Mad Cow

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: Mad Cow

With all this talk of Menus and Barbcue sauce I thought of Beef. Has anyone stopped or are you going to stop eating beef in light of the Mad cow news? I know they say it is little risk to the public but I'm not able to eat it right now.

I'm not terribly worried, but we don't eat red meat often anyway.

We are in the west, so I am following the news on this quite closely. We went grocery shopping the other day and chose chicken and pork, over beef because of the mad-cow scare. But, we do have beef in the house, and will probably eat it. So, that's fairly contradicting isn't it? LOL
I guess I'm not TOO worried because we haven't had a recall or warning yet in our state. But, like you mentioned, Melissa, it's just the thought that gets to me.

There is little to no risk of human infection from BSC. This is just hitting the US but it has been a big part of our lives since that dreaded day in May. Particularly, since I live in the heart of Canada's beef industry and the infected cow here in Canada was found less than an hour away. We have and will continue to support our beef industry. Many communities throughout Alberta have been declared finanical disaster areas due to the impact to the economy of that one infected cow.

Anyway...sorry to get on my bandwagon...this issue really touches home. To answer your question, it has not changed the eating habits of my family.

Mad Cow Disease.... another reason I do not eat any meat. Yuck!

I'd never really thought about it. HOWEVER - I bought some sirloin at Sams club on 12/27, went straight home and put it in the fridge, took it out on the 29th (which was the *sell by* date) to cook, and when we turned it over, the bottom was greenish/gray and the smell knocked you over! I'm not a huge beef fan to begin with, but that will likely turn me off from it for a while. And it did make me wonder...................

How did the cow get infected?

By Conni on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 09:23 am:

We dont eat much red meat. We eat chicken, fish and pork. So I havent changed my shopping habits much and I havent worried much about it...

We eat red meat and I have not given it much thought really. I have ground beef still in my freezer, so I have not had to buy any yet. So, maybe when the time comes it will cross my mind. I do like ground turkey too, so I may buy that for my chili or spaghetti sauce. I feel just awful for the Beef farmers that are going to be struggling from this.
