ParaTransit Services?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2007: ParaTransit Services?

Has anyone had to deal with a service like this? I have a friend who desperately needs transportation services to and from doctor appointments. Is this something the insurance company will pay for? Do they cross State lines? i'd really appreciate any input:)

Paratransit services are usually part of your local public transportation system. I'd start there. If that doesn't work, call the County Office of Aging - it will be one of the departments in the county. I'm guessing your friend is not aged, but the Office of Aging will know how to contact the paratransit services and often what the rules are, funding, costs, etc. Also check with the social services department of a nearby hospital.

Here, we have services like that, it costs the *patient* $2 (?) each way, but the down side of it is, you are on THEIR schedule, you could spend a few hours on this bus, as they stop along a specified route to pick up a number of patients, then bring them to their destinations.
We looked into that when my mom was first diagnosed with cancer and had to go to radiation treatments every day, but in the end, my sister and I alternated days for those 6 weeks and took off work to take her, she just wasn't strong enough to spend the entire day, every day, in transport and treatment. Maybe in your area it works differently. :-)

My church hee offers a service like that. If she is a member of a church, you could call and see if that have soemething. If she isn't a member, you could call one of the big churches in your area and ask them.

If it's cancer, the american cancer society has volunteers that offer rides. Go to

good luck.
