Basement finishing and basement systems

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2007: Basement finishing and basement systems
By Amecmom on Thursday, September 6, 2007 - 08:29 pm:

Has anyone here done a basement refinishing with a basement system like Owens Corning or Champion - or some other totally integrated system?
We are rehabbing a house and will possibly have to live in the basement while the upper floors are being completed. The basement is big - 1600 square feet and will have a kitchen and a full bath, so it shouldn't be too bad.
We are just trying to get some feedback as to the process and the quality of a system as opposed to traditional dry-wall or some of the new mold resistant drywall.
So ... if you just recently finished your basement chime in with your experience - whether or not you used a system.
Thanks,
Ame

We refinished our basement when we lived in ohio. It was by far our fav room in the house. We had a full bathroom, but no kitchen. We just did traditional sheetrock though, not sure why, just what we knew I guess. We prewired everything for every occasion, cause you just never know what you might need. Good luck.

We had Owens Corning when we were in Chicago. We did it after we moved in. We loved it!!!!! It was more expensive, but definitely worth it. Some of the best things about it were, it was very soundproof. I could shut the door when all the neighborhood kids were down there, and I couldn't hear all the noise. Also, we used it as a playroom, and the kids could throw balls, hit the walls, etc, and there were no dents. It is also good for moisture contol, you don't have to worry about mold. We had a great experience with the installation. They first came out, and we told them what we wanted, as far as lighting, doors, walls. They came up with a plan and gave us a price. Then, we had three installers who came out. They were very professional, and hard workers. I want to say it took about 2 weeks to complete the work. It was a few years ago, so I may be off on the timeframe.

If you have any more questions, let me know.

We currently have the Owens Corning system in our basement and LOVE it. I agree about the sound proof part of it. It is fantastic! Our installation took less than 5 days for their part of it. They started on Monday and were out about lunch time on Friday! Had the carpet installers and furniture delivery guys come the next week and within two weeks we had a totally finished and furnished basement! I wouldn't hesitate to do it again in any future houses we might have.

I would love this...can any of you share an average price on doing Owens Corning?

our sheetrock basement was also soundproof. I thin maybe that is the cement walls..LOL. However if they threw balls at the walls it did leave dents. Our time frame was about 2 1/2 months. Cost, for the bathroom was 10K and then another 10k for the rest of the room, we did our own painting, but that price included the carpet.

Oh...also I wanted to add, that I thought it had better insulation, so the basement seemed to stay warmer when it was cold, and didn't feel as damp as the normal dry wall basement.
