Need a shoulder to cry on and prayers

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2007: Need a shoulder to cry on and prayers
By Shann on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - 03:58 pm:

It has seem to be the worst few months for my family. My sister had her second mamogram done and they are almost positive she has breast cancer. She has to lumps right under her coler bone. I can't figure out why they are telling her that she may have it when they have only did a mamogram. She has an ultrasound in the next couple of days and they say that will pretty much tell them. She is scared. she has to worry about herself and along with our Mom having her second opinion done for lung cancer. It is rough. I just cry. I am home alone all day to just sit and think and cry and yell I cant figure out why now and all the sudden. though my Mom did tell my sister jokingly that her and mom can have cemo together. so they didn't have to go it alone. So please say a prayer that all is going to be good.

Shann, I'm so sorry. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Come here whenever you need to talk. You have a lot to deal with now. I can see how it must feel overwhelming to you.
((Big hugs.))

Ditto Nicki. You all do have a lot on your plate right now and I hope that everyone will get answers soon so that you all can get on with it, whatever "it" might be.. (((Warm Fuzzy HUGS))) You are all in my thoughts..

Yes, this is the place to go to cry and borrow shoulders.

I don't know why doctors offices do the things they do either. They told my MIL that her liver was shutting down and then when the follow up blood test results came in, everything was fine. sheeesh...

Are they going to do a PET scan? That is more accurate that an U/S. Did your mom have a PET scan?

Look at it this way, *if* either or both of them do have cancer, hopefully it's caught early, and the outlook may not be as grim as you originally thought.

As for chemotherapy, I think your sister has a great attitude, saying she and your mom could go through it together. Anything at all that will give them a positive attitude is a help!

Let us know what you/they find out!

Karen my Mom goes next Tuesday to have the scan. Can you tell me How a Pet scan works. One lady was telling my Mom that they shoot a dye between her big toe and the next toe. Which I am a little curious to find out what it all intells.
Thank you all for your prayers.

PET scans use radioactive dye, which is normally *mixed* with glucose solution. The dye is usually given by IV but sometimes it can be given through inhaled gas for the PET scan. It usually takes about an hour, give or take, for the dye to go throughout your body. The PET scan is a total body scan, and cancerous cells usually absorb more glucose than other healthy cells in the body, so they show up brighter on the scan. I think I remember the entire test taking between a half hour and an hour when my mom had them. They're accurate because they will show if cancer has metastasized. I remember her having to lie pretty still once she was given the dye, so it would be evenly distributed throughout, and then you have to be sill while you are being scanned.
