Update from WisKAHNsin

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2007: Update from WisKAHNsin
By Pamt on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 11:11 pm:

Hi Ladies!
I have missed you all. We are finally home in Wisconsin after a rather trying week. We are in beds and the kitchen is functional, but still a few boxes around and no pictures on the walls yet. Here's our saga in a nutshell:

Thurs. 8/16--find out that the people who are buying out house in LA don't have homeowners insurance yet and can't get it b/c of storms in the Gulf. Closing on Friday is pushed to Monday at the earliest.

Fri. 8/17--Brief window between storms Erin and Dean and buyers get insurance. Will close on the house on Monday. DS not feeling well. Take him to the doctor in the midst of chaos---diagnosis: strep throat. Finish loading the largest U-Haul we could get and the car we are towing is packed to the roof. Still can't get everything in! Leave some stuff behind in storage.

Sat. and Sun. 8/18-19--Drive to Wisconsin with 2 boys, 2 dogs, 2 cats in a rented Durango (since my car is still be repaired from the wreck on 8/4 and won't be ready for at least another week) and a U-Haul towing our other car. NO PROBLEMS!!! Praise God!

Mon. 8/20--Supposed to close on our house in LA at 10:30 and our house in WI in the afternoon with money being wired. Had to sign POA over to our realtor (who used to be in our youth ministry) so he could sign for us. Find out that we can't close in LA because the homeowners policy is still being written. No money, so do a "dry closing" in WI--papers filled out, but no money changes hands. We're playing wait-and-see. We open a bank account in WI and tell the new accounts woman that we are homeless and jobless at the moment. She gets a good laugh out of our saga.

Tues. 8/21--Keep extending our checkout time at the hotel to see if we will be sleeping in our new home. Pets are being boarded at the vets. Had to pay extra $275 to hold out loan rate past the initial date of closing on Monday, plus extra hotel, extra boarding, extra meals,. ad nauseum. Find out that the closing in LA will take place at 2:30 pm and they can't (won't?) bump it up. The latest they can wire money is 3:00pm and the LA title agent (Lily) is pretty sure she can't get the money to us. We don't hear from Lily and she doesn't answer the phone or return our calls. We go to the title co in WI and sign a bazillion papers and are totally done except for the money. Lily won't mail it to WI title, but only to our bank. Still not returning our calls or the WI title agent's (Robin) calls. Finally I call the bank at 4:55 pm and the funds are there, but Lily never called and told us that. Too late to get the money to the title company, so in a hotel room for one more day. Meanwhile, we get permission to "rent" our garage from the former owners so we can return the U-Haul. We have a small band of people from a church in Waupaca, WI come and help unload and feed us. What a blessing!

Wed. 8/22--I have to be at work at 8 am. Robert dashes the check over to the title company and gets the keys. The former owners charged us $160 to rent OUR garage for 17 hours ($80/day for 2 "calendar" days). We are so glad to be finished with them! And Lily at the title company in Baton Rouge too. MOVE IN!!

It's over and done. We are in our very spacious home. We have lots of updating to do as the house is stuck in the 70s, but we love the neighborhood and our huge lot. We have seen lots of cool wildlife and we have met wonderful neighbors already. We had a bonfire and made smores with 2 families last night. One of the families has 2 boys in the same grades as my two and we just all click personality-wise too. They are going to be such a blessing.

Through it all we have learned that God is the God of "just enough." When we were so frustrated and thought we would have a meltdown, He provided just enough of a break, or rest, or money, or help for us to see a glimpse of Him and to be reminded that He was taking care of us.

Now here it is Monday again. DH left this morning to drive all the way back to LA to return the rental and get my van. Maybe THIS weekend we can actually start to rest!

Wow! You've had an interesting week. I'm so glad you are finally in your home. Personally, I think it's ridiculous that the previous owners charged you to rent the garage.

Anyway, I do hope you start feeling like your house is your home soon.

Wow, what a lot of hassles! In this day and age of cellphones, you'd think that Lily could have called you and told you the money had been sent!

I'm glad you are "home" now and can start getting settled!

People, not from Wisconsin, say it funny! LOL! It always seems to me that out-of-state people emphasize the "c" syllable more than born-and-raised Wisconsinites, who barely say the "W" syllable! LOL! Like W'sconsin. People from WI, say the S+C sound more like the word sconce + in. People not from Wisconsin say it more like Pam typed it, in the topic title!

I'm so glad that you are finally able to settle in. What a testimony that you were able to "find" God, even in these circumstances. I hope everything else goes smoothly for you and your family, Pam.

Wow, I'm exhausted just reading what you wrote. :o I'm glad things are starting to settle down and hopefully you will get the rest you need. Through all your setbacks, it's great that you can still see God's hand at work in your lives. :)

I would need a vacation after all of that and here you are going to work.. How's that going for you??? Hopefully, you all will get a bit of R and R this weekend.. Glad you are safe and sound. :)

Glad you are finally settled in your new home, Pam. I have a friend from WisKAHNsin, she lived here in River Ridge for a few years, and is back *home* now, and that is EXACTLY how she pronounces it.

Hopefully you won't have any more obstacles now. Good luck with your new job!!!!!

Wow, what a week. I'm glad your finally settling in to your new home. We've missed you around here :)

I'm enjoying the second novel, too. Thanks for the suggestion. I really enjoy novels that delve into the day to day life of the characters and how they intermingle.

What a whirlwind! So glad everything came out alright in the end, but oh what a pain. Happy New Home and good luck in your new job!

By Nicki on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - 01:16 pm:

Glad you are settled and doing okay!
I, too am surprised the previous owners charged you rent on the garage. How greedy.:-(
Hope you and your family are able to relax together this weekend.
