The price of flights!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2007: The price of flights!
By Bellajoe on Monday, August 13, 2007 - 09:19 am:

We are going to Disney World next year, so I have been searching for a "inexpensive" flight. I know i'm not going to get anything cheap but I refuse to pay $400 per ticket for 4 people! We don't have $1600 to drop like that! Especially since we will still have to pay for the house we are staying in, rent a car, and eat. Not to mention the tickets for the parks. I know it's not a cheap vacation. The airline tickets are just outrageous though.

It's getting frustrating and stressful. We really don't want to have to drive the 15 hours or whatever it will be but we might have to!
I have found some for $238 on Cheaptickets but they arrive in Orlando at midnight. Not what we want to do when we are going to the parks the next day.

Are there any secrets to relatively inexpensive flights out there that I don't know about?

We always got a package deal for Disney World and our airline tickets were never that bad...maybe low $200's or around $198 each. Never bought tickets separately because they were too high. Our package included our stay on the grounds at Disney, park tickets, airline, and shuttles. We never rented a car, but we could have added that to our package. We just never left the grounds.

We always went through our travel agent as well, but you can book through disney.com for packages as well. It was always the same price as our agent, I just liked getting the tickets in hand and dealing with a real person that I could see! :)

Have you thought about a package? Thats what I used the last time I went and will use next year when I go also so that meals and other expenses where included.

If your thinking of driving (I guess so that you would not have to rent a car also) then have you considered Amtrak Auto train. I know that with a paid ticket you take your car for free( won't have to drive that long distance) and since there is a second paying adult I believe that one of your kids may be able to travel for free. But even if they can't my kids tickets round trip for a 9 and 10 year old where 66.40 and 69.70 each.

Try fares into Jacksonville or Datona Beach. They are usually much cheaper. You can rent a car and get to Orlando in about an hour. I've gotten great fares that way

kayak.com will search all the different ticket places for you, if you want to try them. Also, farecast.com will track fares for you, whether the ticket price trend will go up or down. I've recently discovered them, as we are planning a trip to MI in April/May and need our tickets by October.

I like using Kayak too.

We are going with my sister and her family and have already booked a house for that week. We will not be staying on the Disney grounds.
Last time we went (2004) we stayed on the grounds at the Caribbean Beach hotel. We did rent a car. Plus we had to eat out for each of our meals for all four days we were there. It will be interesting to see how much we spend this time vs. how much we spent last time on everything.
The good thing about having a house is that you don't have to go out to eat constantly which costs an arm and a leg at Disney but you do have to pay for parking every day.

We should go to a travel agent just to see if they can find a better price in flights and rental cars.

I will go to Kayak.com and farecast.com and check it out.

thank you!
