Craigslist type stuff....

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2007: Craigslist type stuff....
By Jackie on Friday, August 10, 2007 - 02:11 pm:

People are so funny(Odd) sometimes about stuff.

I have this patio set I am trying to sell for a whole $15. My neighbors were moving 2 yrs ago and were not taking it with them, so my husband asked if we could have it. They said "Sure". It has 4 chairs with cushions. The cushions were in bad shape, but the chairs are fine without them.(I even stated in the ad, that no cushions came with chairs) The glass table is in fine usable condtion. I list the table and 4 chairs. I state in good/used condition, needs a cleaning. We leave it outside all the time.
It works fine, nothing is broken or cracked etc..
This lady sends her husband over to look at it. I could tell hes not interested, no biggy really. BUT COME ON... its 15$. In all honestly if I had a patio table and chairs in perfect condition are you expecting perfection?
I dont lie when I post ads...I tell exact condition.

My sonn was selling 35 "Goosebump" books. He mostly got them from yard sales or thrift stores. They are in good condition, not perfect but good. I mean hes 13 so he doesnt rip pages or write in them. SOme man emailed about them, asked a ton of questions. Then wanted me to tell him how many were in "Perfect" condition. My son was selling all 35 for $10,or 50cents a book. I dont think unreasonable. I emailed this man saying if hes looking for perfect books to resell at a higher price then this isnt the books for him. He said oh no, he just wants books in good condition to give his son. Then went on and asked again for me to look through each book and tell him the exact condition... COME ON PEOPLE... I wrote back saying that I wasnt going to do it, and that he wants the books or doesnt it..he never wrote back LOL

What do people expect? We dont price our items high, yet people want perfection...oh such is life :)

I know what you are talking about. People can be so picky and then will want to buy them only if they can get it like $5 cheaper than what you listed it for. I mean we list things cheaply and we get the same odd people.

By Kate on Friday, August 10, 2007 - 03:12 pm:

I don't find that odd at all. I think the people don't want to waste their time, or your time, coming out to see the items. No description is going to cover everything that is important to each and every person. Therefore, the serious people who are seriously interested, are going to write with more specific questions. I appreciate and welcome the questions because as I said, then my time isn't wasted waiting for someone to come out, and their time isn't wasted coming out to see something they end up not liking WHICH they could have already possibly figured out by a few questions via email! Fifteen dollars may not seem like much, but if it's not for something someone wants then it's a total waste of their money. The patio set may have been properly priced and described, but it ended up not being to his liking...what's so odd about that? As for the books, I'm just as picky. And Goodwill sells those same books here for 33 cents each, so while 50 cents isn't bad, I can see why someone would want more info on their condition since it's not an amazing price.

Since it's not Freecycle, but a list where things are actually FOR SALE, I don't see any reason why people shouldn't be picky about what they're spending their money on.

Also, wanted to add we ALWAYS include pictures. I am no way trying to scam anybody. My son researched books on Craigslist(for this type of book), and his our lower then the others listed.

By Jackie on Friday, August 10, 2007 - 03:24 pm:

Oh about the books hes selling the whole lot of 35 books for $10, thats 35cents a book.

By Juli4 on Friday, August 10, 2007 - 07:50 pm:

I agree. We never list anything without a picture because we know we never waste our time even clicking on anything without a picture.

My son sold all his Goosebumps books this morning. The first man never emailed back. I am guessing he did not like my comment LOL.. Another lady wrote, asked the condition. I responded with "they are in good/read condition. She said ok, Ill be there Saturday at 11. 11am on the dot they were here, gave my son the 10$ off they went. Apparently they didnt think there was anything wrong with the books, or that they were priced too high.
Another lady is on her way to pick up the patio table. I explained in detail to her the conditon. She saw a picture, but with after the man not liking it I wanted her to be sure and not waste her time. I said the worst of it is that its dirty. She said that she has no problem using some soap and water. I even lowered the price to $10 because she seemed so nice LOL...

Wow. It's a whole different story, with a different group of people! Goodness. I wouldn't expect used books to be in brand-new-bookstore condition. Sheesh! They were only 35 cents a piece!

By Hol on Saturday, August 11, 2007 - 03:19 pm:

I lose patience with people who expect new condition when the price is so reasonable, and the objects are stated as USED. Especially kids' books. Kids don't care what condition they are in as long as there are no pages missing. My take on it is, if you want brand new, excellent condition, then go buy new. There is a lot of good stuff out there for cheap that is usable, with a little TLC, like your patio set.

My guess is that the first guy wanted the "perfect" books to resell at a higher price.

By Rayelle on Saturday, August 11, 2007 - 04:07 pm:

Yes, I agree that guy probably wanted to resell the books. I love going to yard sales, when it's someone wanting to get rid of something as opposed to people who seem to be having yard sales to supplement their income. I mean, why would I pay as much or more for something than it costs in a store? They had to put a note out on our local freecycle because losers were posting ads for things like a plasma tv or furniture that matches and is in perfect condition. I think your prices sounded very good.

Speaking of yard sales...my DH saw an estate sale posted on the bulletin board in the post office where he works. He had never been to one, but saw that tools were among the items listed for sale. The man who passed away also had the same last name as our adopted DS's before they came to us.

He got to the house and a lot of things were spread out over the lawn. There were also furniture items for sale in the house, and an old 1966 automobile in the garage. It was all for sale.

My DH said that he felt so bad in that people were picking over the stuff and he heard many of them talking about reselling it on ebay. He said "All I could think of was poor Mr. B******; he worked hard all of his life and here were these strangers who had no connection to him pouring over his things". He bought a handmade chest that was cedar lined for the boys. He thought that maybe, way back, this gentleman may have been related to them. However, he said he couldn't look at anything else. The behaviour of the buyers disgusted him.
