Dessert!

Do you eat dessert everyday?

We don't, but I'm asking because I recently spent time with a family who did. The children had to eat a reasonable amount of dinner then they were allowed fruit and some sort of dessert. It could be anything from a piece of cake, cookie etc.

Tonight I gave my kids a mini-cone with about 2 teaspoons of ice cream. They are in heaven and quiet. :)

Sometimes I give them some fruit with plan yogurt, granola and honey. They love it.

Dessert is not part of our everyday tradition, it's just an occasional thing.

So what is your family tradition concerning desserts?

By Cocoabutter on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 06:12 pm:

We don't consider is dessert. But an hour or so after dinner, dh usually proposes that we have a dish of ice cream. He gets his with hot fudge, ds (who doesn't always want it) likes chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup, and I like cherry ice cream with Magic Shell (but I don't always partake, either.)

I am looking into fruit desserts as a more healthy way of getting our sweets in. There are tons of recipes. I like Jello, and there's a recipe with cake, pudding, fruit, and whipped topping. mmmm.....

Chai, those sound like yummy treats. We don't eat dessert every day and my family didn't either, when I was growing up. It was just a once-in-a-while treat.

By Happynerdmom on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 06:58 pm:

No, we don't eat dessert as a part of our dinner. Like Cocoabutter, we often have a sweet treat later in the evening before bed. (I know...a horrible time to add calories!!) It is usually ice cream, cookies, or, in the summer, I'll make strawberry shortcake.

One reason I love having company for dinner is that I always make a dessert for company! It gives me a good excuse, lol! :)

By Yjja123 on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 07:38 pm:

One of our favorite desserts is frozen grapes. They are super sweet and icey. It curbs our craving for ice cream and it is is much healthier. :)

By Pamt on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 07:46 pm:

We have dessert with company and then usually once a week I'll make dessert. I also make cookies about once a week. Last night we had some friends over and I made a blackberry cobbler that we ate with vanilla bean ice cream. Yum!! (and we still have leftovers :))

By Jackie on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 07:58 pm:

We dont have it everynight. Occasionally a few hrs after dinner, the kids are allowed a snack if hungry. We normally dont keep too many sweets here, mainly because Id eat them LOL..If we have company over(which is rare)then we will have dessert after dinner.

By Reds9298 on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 08:41 pm:

We've never had dessert unless it's a holiday or a family get-together. DH often has a small cup of ice cream before bed, and very occasionally I'll have a piece of cinnamon toast before bed, but that's not common.

I love to bake but don't do it often because I know we would eat it! LOL I don't see the point of making a sweet treat that's low-fat, so I just don't bake much. :) When I do though, we usually eat it before bed. Never after dinner.

By Crystal915 on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 08:45 pm:

We don't have dessert every night, just an occasional snack. Sweets aren't a constant, but they aren't a restricted thing either, so it's kind of whenever someone has a craving. I'll make cookies every so often, or a cake, and every once in a while we'll have ice cream, but there is usually yogurt and fruit around to snack on.

By Rayelle on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 10:05 pm:

We don't have dessert everyday. Growing up my mom would have it every time for awhile and then occasionally as she became more health conscious. My kids have something before bed every night unless we had an unusually late dinner. We call it bedtime snack as opposed to dessert and it isn't usually something too sweet. The ice cream man comes around 9 p.m. 3 nights a week so they get that in the summer. I probably bake something like cupcakes or cookies about once a week.

By Ginny~moderator on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 10:10 pm:

My mother believed a meal was not complete without dessert, even if it was just canned pears with syrup. I didn't and don't serve dessert, except for holiday meals. But I did often (not regularly) allow my sons some sort of snack after the end of the meal most times (assuming they'd eaten a reasonable meal). It was anything that was handy and a treat - a handful of pretzels, or popcorn, or a frozen Koolaid home-made icepop, a slice of melon (expecially watermelon), and sometimes some Oreos or a small cupcake. As they got older, the treats were less attractive to them, so they didn't ask for them. There was always fruit in the house, and that they could have any time as long as it wasn't "too close" to a regular meal-time.

And of course, when they got into their teens, what they usually ate about an hour after dinner was more dinner. The stories about male teenage appetites are *not* apocryphal!

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 12:01 am:

Emily isn't male, but she must be in about her last growth spurt. For the last month or two, she has been packing away the food, like it's going out of style! I think she has gotten a bit taller, too! She has had plates of food at restaurants that seem like she would never finish it,but we turn around and it's gone! LOL! She is almost 15-1/2.

By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 12:27 am:

Uh. :( We eat dessert almost every night. :) Edy's fudge tracks ice cream with Splenda. Sometimes with bananas and natural peanut butter. YUM!!

By Cocoabutter on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 12:34 am:

My son is 10 and he's hungry all the time. 3 hours after dinner he wants to know if he can have another dinner. We might eat a big 4 course meal and 2 hours later he's hunting for more food. He has asked me to fix spaghetti at midnight before (which I refused- I said "I only fix one dinner per day.")

Tonight we ate out and he cleaned his plate. 3 hours later he wants a hotdog. I keep lots of snacks, like grapes, bananas, apples and oranges, pretzels and popcorn and I will let him have a bowl of cereal if it's late.

He's not overweight. This summer he's outside quite a bit more than usual. He got a new bike earlier this summer so that helped. I just can't figure out what to do about his appetite.

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 08:23 am:

I guess we are weirdos...........when my kids were young, Jeff considered a carrot *dessert*. :-( He didn't like sweets at all when he was little, strange kid! LOL We were never big on regular desserts, like many of you we always had fresh fruit on hand. Not that we didn't have cookies or ice cream in the house, but dessert wasn't part of our meal time. The kids actually had their *dessert* calories in their lunch box - every day they had a treat along with their lunch and a piece of fruit.

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 08:36 am:

My kids usually get "dessert" if they eat their meal. But "dessert" is usually one cookie or a Hershey's Kiss or two. I guess we like to finish dinner on a sweet note. :)

Once in a while we will have some ice cream after dinner, but not often. I do make dessert once in a while if i'm in the mood.

By Debbie on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 09:54 am:

We don't have a "formal" dessert time after dinner.

This summer my 7 and 9 yr old have been eating me out of house and home. A few weeks ago, I took my youngest back to the allergist for a checkup, and he had grown almost an inch since May. We have been eating dinner at around 5:30 because of football practice. My oldest will eat another full meal when he gets home from football. My youngest has a snack an hour before bed. I usually don't have cake, cookies, etc in the house. Mainly, because I don't want to eat them, and I will if they are here. We do usually have ice cream(mainly for dh), pudding, jello, and popsicles in the house. My boys usually have something like cheese/crackers, graham crackers with peanut butter, etc, and then they will have a popsicle, jello, or something. This summer, they have really been into eating the strawberry, real fruit popsicles. And, dh usually has a cup of ice cream before bed. I have been cutting out sweets, so I usually don't have anything. Sometimes I will have a skinny cow fudgsicle or something after dinner.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 10:13 am:

Lisa, an increase in appetite generally means they are getting ready to take a big growth spurt. All of my children have had an increase in food intake and put on weight right before a major jump in height. Except for Emily, who I think is going into her last growth spurt, all of my children are thin.. Also, boys seem to require more food than girls do.. Like Ginny said, "The stories about male teenage appetites are *not* apocryphal!" I don't know where Dillan puts it all but he can put away the food and then turn around two hours later and eat a bowl of cereal.. His friends are the same way.. So I am thinking it is one of those male things.. LOL

Anyway, no deserts during a meal here, unless it is a special occasion and that is because I chose not to make a habit of it. I keep sweet snacks in the house, cookies, ice cream but my kids like Karens generally opt to eat good foods.. I am assuming that is probably because of me.. Like Jeff, I do not crave sweets, I am not big on cake or ice cream type of person. I don't know why but I do know that I have always been that way.. Don't get it wrong, I am about 40 pounds over weight so I am a huge eater, just not of the sweet things in life.. LOL I guess I was born with out the sweet tooth gene..

By Debbie on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 10:24 am:

Oh...and Lisa, both my boys are eating like yours, and they are not overweight. In fact, my oldest is very skinny. Like Bobbie said, they usually eat like this during a growth spurt. Also, my boys are very active in summer, we swim daily. They also ride bikes, scotters etc, each day. Also, with football, my ds is always starving after practice. Last night he ate a whole ham and cheese sandwich, goldfish, and a popsicle after practice. This is after he ate a full meal around 5:30.

By Cocoabutter on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 02:50 pm:

Well, when I said he was not overweight, I didn't mean to imply that he was skinny. He's bulky, and does't look like he needs any more food. So when he asks for something to eat only 2-3 hours after dinner, I worry that he isn't really hungry, just bored, or maybe he just can't stop thinking about food. That's how I was when I was 10. I wasn't active and ate snacks and sweets and foods high in fat and carbs and grew into an overweight teenager. At 16, I weighed 165 pounds. I just don't want that to happen to my son.

Dh can eat like once or twice a day and not be hungry at all. So I think ds got my metabolism.

By Melanie on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - 03:49 pm:

We eat dinner pretty late compared to many families, so dessert definitely is not on the menu. I do serve desserts when we have company and sometimes when we go out we will let the kids get something. But typically dinner is the last thing we all eat for the day.

By Tink on Thursday, August 9, 2007 - 11:08 am:

Dessert happens once a week or so around here but it's a popsicle or a sugar cookie with fruit. We eat dinner late and my kids go to bed early so there isn't much time for their hunger to kick in. My ds will ask for a snack if he has a later bedtime because he's had a chance to get hungry again.

By Eve on Friday, August 10, 2007 - 09:59 am:

I don't usually make dessert, because I would be the only one eating it! LOL Normally, if I have baked cookies or something, the kids will have a couple as a bedtime snack with some milk. Sometimes, they will have something. Usually, the opt for crackers or popcorn with some milk or sparkling water.

Me? I usually grab a 2 pt. weight watchers ice cream.
