Lunch Ideas for the Gym

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2007: Lunch Ideas for the Gym

We meaning me and my two kids ages 1-1/2 and 3 years are going to start going to the gym three mornings a week. While I'm working out they will be in child care, when my class ends we will go to Big Bird Club which is an active program for young children where they are allowed to run around, jump and play for about 30 mins.

This bring us to lunch time. I thought it would be easier to just have lunch at the gym so I need lunch ideas that we can pack and bring along with us.

They don't really eat sandwiches unless they are grilled cheese which won't work. They are both still too young for things like raw carrots.

I just need three basic ideas as we will be going Mon. Wed. and Fri. mornings. Help, I really need some healthy ideas.

I thought we could do ham and cheese with crackers, tortilla wraps, yogurt, fresh fruit, bagels. I'm trying to stay away from too much processed meat as it has too much salt and nitrates. We tend to eat a lot of homemade soup at home, but this is just too messy for public areas.

Any other ideas?

Do you guys like hummus? There are so many flavors, you can spread it in wraps or on crackers, it's yummy! DH and I have been off work all week, and twice, our lunch or dinner was hummus and crackers, cheese, fruit and yogurt.

If you take a small ice chest, you could do something similar.

What about peanut butter? That's an option too.

PB&J always works with kids and there's some good choices of the jam and the peanutbutter. My kids loved anything they could dip. Chicken breast cut in strips with ranch or anyother dip worked well. Do they have a microwave? Then leftovers always works. Good Luck

Great ideas! Thanks so much. I'm not sure if they have a microwave, I'll have to check.

We aren't yet doing Peanut Butter, I'm kind of on the fence about it. I think I'll start when my youngest turns 2. The American Pediatric Society is recommending not starting Peanut Butter until the age of 4! Gosh when we were kids we ate anything and everything how times have changed.

I love Hummus and all those wonderful deli dips, I'll give it a try.

Do they like pita pockets instead of bread for sandwiches? My kids seem to eat anything in a pita, even fresh spinach.
