Medical question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2007: Medical question
By Kaye on Monday, June 25, 2007 - 09:28 am:

So a little history. I play a lot of tennis, I am pretty active. On Friday my boys and I went to schlitterbahn. Basically means we hung out in tubes all day, did some walking. I didn't carry a cooler (hubby did), I did lift the tube in and out a few times.

Well saturday morning I wake up, both my wrists are sore, not just uncomfortable, but pretty painful. Now nothing else hurts, hubby who isn't as active had sore shoulders, sore legs etc, he has no pain in his wrists.

Logic tells me, I did something to strain my wrists, although I can't come up with what it might have been. Pain is on the outside of each wrist and really hurts when my arms or hands are turned at all. There is no swelling, no heat, just pain.

So first question, other than injury, any one know of anything that could cause duel wrist pain?

Second question, so lets say it is an injury, I can't imagine they are fractured, how long do I wait to see a doc. I slept with them wrapped last night and there might be some improvement today.

Third question, if I give in and go to the doc, what type of doc do I see. I really don't go to the doc, haven't been in a year, I go to my yearly female check up and he does all my blood work, etc.

So I have a family doc that I have seen once, I have an internist that I have seen once, and I have an orthopede that I spent quite a bit of time with 4 years ago due to an injury.

Thanks for reading this far and TIA for suggestions/advice.

I am going to just guess here and say that you strained them somehow yesterday. Unless it is worse today, I wouldn't be one to run to the doctor for it either. I would wait it out a few days and if it gets worse or gets no better, then go. I would start with my primary doctor, but then again, I have to start there. LOL He needs to refer us to others. But he is great and will usually do it with a phone call.

I suffered from tendonitis in both wrists and it was quite painful.I took advil for pain and wore splints with a supportive bar at bedtime.I started with my family md and he did the referrals from there. It sounds like tendonitis or carpal tunnel.Good luck...I struggled with pain for awhile(hugs)

Ditto with starting with your primary doctor.

By Kaye on Monday, June 25, 2007 - 09:50 am:

I have had tendonitis in my elbow before, this is exactly how it feels. It just dumbdounds me that it would present in both wrists at the same time. Isn't that unusual?

I was hoping with a full day of rest yesterday that today they would be much better, they aren't.

I have a tennis match on wed...LOL...priorities.

Mine were in both wrists at the same time too!!Can you take advil...?I found it to be the most effective for me.Putting ice for 15 minutes on and off helped too.

By Enchens on Monday, June 25, 2007 - 04:47 pm:

Definitely see your primary to rule anything out. If it's not anything major, I have a feeling that the dr. will tell you motrin and ice and don't do anything that hurts.

If you can, see if you can see someone who has a sports med background. We are actually quite lucky in that the clinic we attend has 2 primary doctors who also did some sports med. I try to get appointments with them whenever I can.

Hope you feel better soon.

Did you hold on to the sides of the tubes a lot? If so, it could have strained them from being in an odd position like that for extended amounts of time. You probably used muscles you don't typically use, even though you play tennis, and it caused some soreness.

By Karen~admin on Monday, June 25, 2007 - 06:54 pm:

Kaye, I have tendonitis in both elbows and wrists, and am also having a heck of a time with carpal tunnel right now, which *supposedly* can present as wrist pain on the outer wrist, but who knows if that is true.

If you decide to see a doc, I'd go with a sports medicine doc or a physiatrist, or osteopath in physical medicine.

You might try the splints/braces, it could help. Otherwise, like the others said, Advil and ice.

Kaye...hope your feeling ok.Did you manage to play tennis??

By Kaye on Wednesday, June 27, 2007 - 11:40 am:

No tennis today. No doc trip either though. My left wrist is about 90%. My right one is not much better. Probably due to it being much harder to rest. We are headed on vacation tomorrow and I have so much to get done. My elbow on that arm is also bothering me, convincing me for sure that it is tendonitis.

At our resort there is a little tourny on friday, so I am hoping I can play in that. I doubt that I will be able to though.

I still keep thinking, well should I go to the doc. They can't do much other than a cortizone shot and they won't do that right away.

Thanks for asking.

I'm so sorry you're in pain, Kaye. I hope you will get some relief soon.
Take care.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 11:33 am:

I'm sorry you're still in pain. I have a little tendonitis in my R elbow. Sometimes it hurts to bend it. I'm not sure why. I'm knitting a little more than I had been in a while, but that is really the only thing that could probably cause it. I've been working more lately and not able to knit much and today it doesn't hurt at all! LOL!

By Cocoabutter on Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 02:09 pm:

My suggestion would be warm compresses. A soak in a hot tub can do wonders, too!

Wrap your wrists with hot wet washcloths and then wrap those with saran wrap and leave them on for about 1/2 hour. The heat and the moisture may help your tendons and muscles to relax.

By Kaye on Friday, July 6, 2007 - 11:46 am:

So can you believe that my wrists still hurt considerably? If I do nothing all day, I do mean nothing, have them wrapped, take lots of advil I don't feel them. But if I pick up a hair dryer, adjust my pillow with my hands etc. So I finally gave in, I made a doc appointment. The kicker is I can't get in until next wed (maybe thursday), geesh. I called both my family doc and my orthopaedic doc, I could get in sooner with the the ortho, so that is who I am seeing. Not really what I wanted to do, but oh well! I am trying hard to not go to the er before then. I am really getting tired of doing nothing!

By Tripletmom on Friday, July 6, 2007 - 12:06 pm:

Hey Kaye...have you tried wearing splints with the metal supports in them?? I found if I wore them while I slept and took advil in the daytime it lessened the pain some.I hope your feeling better I remembered it sucked not being able to do anything it hurt just to use the remote ((HUGS))

By Kaye on Friday, July 6, 2007 - 12:23 pm:

That is what I am doing, I hate it, feel like edward scissor hands here! I really thought it would be better after 2 weeks. I really have been babying myself. Trying to stay off the computer!

By Tripletmom on Friday, July 6, 2007 - 12:30 pm:

Maybe they'll give you a stronger anti-inflammatory...I was in physio for almost a year.I had a doctor that put a steroid shot in the wrong place so I needed to build up the muscle again :( Hope you get some relief soon..

By Kaye on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 10:05 pm:

after you read the dart board post don't laugh..LOL.

I have my doc appt tomorrow. My left wrist is almost all better (it just gets more rest), my right one sucks, three games of darts and I am in the same place I was 3 weeks ago. I hope I get a big shot...who knew I would think that!

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 10:20 pm:

Good going.... *shakes head*

By Kaye on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 11:55 pm:

LOL bobbie, I am normally a pretty reasonable person, don't take chances etc. I take my kids to the doc way too much, but for me...well, I haven't been to a real doc since early 2004. I do get my pap every other year, per doc orders, he does blood work and such, so I know all is okay really. However my hubby commented, I must really be having an issue if I called to make an appointment, and am keeping it! Oh well, who knows what I will learn tomorrow. I really wanted to play tennis on friday, it has been 3 weeks since I picked up a racket and it is killing me!
