Artificial Sweetners

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive June 2007: Artificial Sweetners
By Chai~latte on Thursday, June 7, 2007 - 03:19 pm:

Hi I'm Katheline and I'm new here.

I just have a question about artificial sweetners, I've tried Twin, Stevia and Splenda and they all just taste weird to me. I have been using Twin recently in my coffee just one packet and it was fine but I decided to use two the other day and could not get the horrible taste out of my mouth. I baked some muffins with Splenda and found it gave me a headache.

I'm still trying to lose my weight from my second child and was looking or alternatives to sugar. So far I haven't found anything that doesn't taste bad.

Just wondering if anyone else uses these or one I haven't heard about.

I learned from Weight Watchers, years ago, that you can bake with Equal but not with Sweet and Low. S & L changes chemically. I think that Sugar Twin is the same ingredient as Sweet & Low. I have not tried Stevia, and ANYTHING with Splenda in it makes me VERY ill! I have to read all diet sodas and drinks to see what it is sweetened with, and avoid Splenda like the plague!

My best advice is to try to learn to drink your coffee with just milk. I do, but I do put a half packet of Sweet & Low in my tea, hot or iced. Also, you can use honey, which is VERY sweet, so you use half the amount as sugar, and it is natural, so it is easily assimilated by the body (and actually good for you).

Years ago, they had a scare about sacharin and Sweet & Low, but the fears were unfounded. I do believe , tho, that we will hear something negative about Splenda, down the road.

By the way, welcome to MV!

Welcome to Momsview!

Don't have any ideas, just wanted to say welcome!

Thank you both so much.

Hol, you are right, I tried my coffee this morning with one sugar instead of two and it was fine. I should just try cutting back on sugar rather than adding the blecky stuff.

I wanted to say hello. I'm also making dietary changes. I'm avoiding gluten because I believe I have a mild allergy and cutting back on sugar as well. The sugar was hard at first, but I broke though the sugar high/crash cycle and don't get strong cravings like I used to. I have been doing this for a little over a month, have lost 17 pounds and feel much better. Good luck!

I read an article recently that said new research claims artificial sweeteners can actually sabotage weight loss efforts. I'll see if I can find it.
