Looking for women's/mom's bible study book

Moms View Message Board: Books, Movies and TV Shows: Looking for women's/mom's bible study book
By Dana on Monday, May 14, 2007 - 12:50 pm:

I'm starting my bible study at my playroom soon and am having a difficult time choosing a study book. Without having prior knowledge to "good" vs "bad" books, I am at a loss looking around.

I know there are books out there saying they are "bible based" but misleading. I want to make sure I pick a sound study w/ true Christian beliefs.

As for topic, something re: parenting preschoolers or the ups and downs of motherhood or keeping a happy marriage and kids in the same house (LOL)

Thanks for recommendations.

Storme OMartian is good, she has the power of a praying wife series (more than just wife available).

I would suggest going to a lifeway books and looking around. Most things by zondervan are pretty sound stuff.

When it comes to parenting, just like any other type of parenting book, Christian parenting comes in all types, Dr Dobson to Dr Sears. You can't switch one group to believe one over the other, it is just part of how we are so fundamentally different. I personally am a Dr Sears fan and he has several Christian parenting books.

The other series I am interested in right now is called "outflow", by steve sjogren, published by Group. I love how this is written, and I will look into whatelse they have.

Are you looking for heavy homework or no homework? Video series, or just book work? If you go to one of the larger churches in the area (Baptist especially) they usually have large libraries and you can preview stuff. Just call and speak to the women's minister and they would be glad to help you.

Beth Moore has some great bible studies out there. Some are pretty in depth.

LOL about the question "heavy homework or no." I think many women will be happy spending the study time doing the leg work then and there. With little ones, not everyone is good at finding time to do extra work.

I really love the studies that include videos w/ great speakers.

I love the books by Storme. Power of a Prayerful Wife is one of my favorites. My MIL just gave me the Praying Parent book (which I already had as well). I took it for the living room in the playroom.

I just completed a great study w/ video dealing w/ preteen/teen kids. The workbook was great and easy to use as well.

The study book we have now is awful. Fill in the blanks w/ the missing words. No open ended questions. Very boring.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them all out.

Kaye, I attend a huge Baptist church, but just started a few months ago, so I wasn't even sure who to ask for suggestions. I will check further into it. They have two bookstores on site too, so I may find something there. I've only gone there a couple times, but never looking for something....just looking around.

I am doing one of the best studies that I have ever done right now. It's directed toward younger women but applies anywhere in a woman's life. It's "A Woman after God's Own Heart" by Elizabeth George. There is nothing about this book that hasn't applied to my life. It's scripture based. And it has a Study and Growth Guide that can be purchased separately if ladies have the time to do it. I started doing the Study and Growth guide, but have gotten busy and not kept that up. Doing the guide is pretty time consuming for me right now. But the book is so good that when our class finishes for the summer, I'm going to take my time and reread it and do the guide.

It has areas about your own spiritual growth, being a good wife, being a good mom, and on and on. It's hits all areas of a woman's life. It is so what I needed right now.

If you're interested and it is okay with the moderators, I'll tell you where I got the best price on my copies.

Debbie, I got your email just fine. I wonder why my reply was not readable for you. It was just a quick thank you for the info. I'm very excited.

I got your 2nd e-mail. The first one looked like it had picture attachments. There were just 4 squares on the page and if you clicked on them, it would open up like a pic but nothing there. I thought it might have been an issue with you replying to my e-mail that had that big copy from the book website.

Let me know if you get it and what you think. I love this study. And let me know if I can be of any other help.

Take care.
