Hey Karen - Dancing w/the Stars

Moms View Message Board: Books, Movies and TV Shows: Hey Karen - Dancing w/the Stars
By Joy~bundles on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 10:31 am:

What do ya think? I'm kinda disappointed with the new celebrities for Dancing w/the Stars: Susan Lucci, Toni Braxton, Lance Bass, Cloris Leachman, Kim Kardashian, Ted McGinley, Brooke Burke, Warren Sapp, Misty May-Treanor, Maurice Greene, Rocco DiSpirito, Cody Linley, and Jeffrey Ross.

I'm kinda unfamiliar with some of them I guess, but you know Susan Lucci will be elegant, and Cloris Leachman should be interesting.

September 22nd, here we come!! :)

By Karen~admin on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 11:29 am:

Grrrrrr.............I hate my keyboard! I typed a response and it dumped it!

Not thrilled either........I like Susan Lucci, Lance Bass, Brooke Burke and Misty May.....

IMO, Cloris Leachman, Warren Sapp and Rocco DiSpirito can all stay home.

And I cannot STAND Kim Kardashian.

The first couple nights will be very telling........can't wait to see who's got talent.

By Bellajoe on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 10:44 pm:

I don't know who many of them are, although I will probably recognize them when I see them. I'll be rooting for Misty May! I enjoyed watching her and Kelly win the GOLD :)

Other than her, Lance, Toni and Susan I don't know anyone on that list. It'll be interesting.

By Imamommyx4 on Monday, August 25, 2008 - 10:49 pm:

UGHHHHH! I missed the first show!!!! I didn't know it started tonight....

By Joy~bundles on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 08:06 am:

Debbie - you didn't miss anything because the show doesn't premiere until September 22nd!! :)

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 09:06 am:

The buzz is that Rocco DiSpirito can dance........I'll believe that when I see it......every image of him in my mind is of spaghetti sauce, flirting with patrons and totally not having a clue about how to run his business...........

Cody Linley just *might* surprise us all - he's partnered with Julianne Hough.....

Supposedly Jeffrey Ross will make Adam Corolla seem *mild*.......

By Karen~admin on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 11:26 am:

OK-------

Favorites???? Actually, that is probably the wrong word - who do you think is the best dancer??

I think the voting system is really unfair.......it's clear that the weight given to fan-based votes is swaying whether or not the *true* worst dancers get voted off, and I am really not happy about that. Also, it's more obvious each season, that the judges have *favorites*, and it appears they are scoring unfairly. It's all not enough to make me stop watching the show for sure, but enough to irritate me......

IMO, there are 1 or 2 who *should* have been voted off, but weren't.......and it's obviously due to fan base. It's a DANCE COMPETITION, not a popularity contest. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR And someone needs to tell Cloris Leachman to shut up for 5 minutes and give someone else a chance to speak..........after the first time of her going on and on and on, it's just not funny anymore.

By Marcia on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 12:57 pm:

I watched the first night, but forgot the second 2. Who was voted off? Who should have been?

By Joy~bundles on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 01:22 pm:

Yes, I totally agree that it is increasingly obvious that the judges have their favorites and that who stays or who goes has nothing whatsoever to do with their dance abilities and everything to do with their fanbase keeping them on the show. :(

I thought Cloris would be entertaining, but she's waaaayyy over the top. She needs to have her moment of fun, but then settle down and let everyone have a chance to talk. Her partner, Corky Ballas, was clearly annoyed last night when he was finally going to get a chance to speak, and then she kept speaking right over him.

I'm really enjoying the Warren Sapp/Kym Johnson partnership!! They're really fun and cute together - lots of enthusiasm and smiles!!

I think Toni Braxton is doing amazing, especially considering her heart condition. I was actually a bit concerned for her when they were about to start their Quick Step on Tuesday night.

Ted McGinley and his newcomer, partner Inna were voted off last night. I really enjoyed his Mambo. :(

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 - 10:31 am:

:(

Did any of you see Misty May's injury?! UGH! Poor girl! And she was one of the ones that *I* thought had great potential. :(

I SO wish Cloris was G-O-N-E!

By Marcia on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 - 01:49 pm:

Cloris had better be gone tonight!! Man, she stinks!! But still, she doesn't do too badly for her age, as far as being able to move around a bit. LOL

Yes, poor MM. She sure has a great attitude, though!

By Joy~bundles on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 - 07:56 am:

Poor Misty!! I agree that she was definitely well on her way to being a great dancer! How painful.

I'm still enjoying Warren and Kym, and I'm glad Rocco gets to stay for another week. :)

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 - 09:39 am:

I am fed up now. It is very apparent now that the judging and fan-based voting is totally NOT fair. I can't BELIEVE Cloris is here for another week. She SHOULD have been gone the first week. She CAN'T dance. Truly, this is enough to make me not want to watch anymore, it's just a popularity contest now.

By Dramamamma on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 - 11:53 am:

This is my first time to watch Dancing with the Stars and I TOTALLY agree Karen! Cloris is absolutely HORRIBLE, isn't this supposed to be about actual "talent"?

I was so sad for Misty and her injury. I REALLY like Warren and Kym as well loving Brooke with her partner. They are awesome!

My "personal" favorites are Susan and Cody though because I love AMC and Cody because he's just so darn cute and is having so much fun with it.

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 - 08:11 pm:

I think Brooke is by far the best dancer this season (so far). I was hoping that Julianne and Cody would do well, but I'm a little disappointed. Susan may be a beautiful woman, but she is too *timid* in her dance to impress me. Warren is surprisingly good, but his attitude really irks me. Again, Cloris needs to GO - she can't dance and she's NOT funny. And I think everyone is tired of watching her try to be funny and make an a$$ of herself.

By Joy~bundles on Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 01:48 pm:

Brook is definitely the Queen of the dance floor this season - no one else even comes close!! I continue to enjoy Warren and Kym - I can't believe how light Warren is on his feet!! He just floats in spite of his hugeness!! I think "timid" is the perfect word to describe Susan's dancing - she's just not letting go enough.

I know we all want Cloris to go (probably gonna happen next week??), but at least she seemed to be taking the competition a smidge more seriously this week.

I'll miss Rocco. I didn't know much about him previously. I had actually heard that he was kind of a jerk, but he seemed like a really nice guy on the show, and it seemed like he was really enjoying himself and the experience.

I got a kick out of some of those celebrity "campaign ads" on the results show the other night. The one where Cloris cost the show over $37,000 for airtime (brought to us by the show's Accounting Dept) was hysterical!! :)

By Dramamamma on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 - 09:11 am:

I am in shock that Cloris is still hanging on, I was SURE she'd go this week.

Cody and Jilianne were AWESOME this week along with Warren and of course Brooke.

The "ads" were so funny, I really enjoyed them! lol... Poor Susan with her injury but glad she's hanging in there.

By Marcia on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 - 09:38 am:

It just shows how insane it is when Cloris is still there and Toni Braxton is gone. Who is voting for her????

By Dramamamma on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 - 11:47 am:

You saw where she went out and "thanked" all her fans for voting for her? I think alot of people vote for her because they feel "sorry" for her.

I will not ever watch again if she ends up winning that's for sure.

By Karen~admin on Saturday, October 25, 2008 - 06:16 am:

Neither me!

By Joy~bundles on Monday, October 27, 2008 - 07:00 am:

I'm really looking forward to the group dance tonight!! Those are always fun and highly enjoyable!!

Also, I loved Riverdance, so I can't wait to hear guest-judge Michael Flatley's critiques this evening!! :)

By Karen~admin on Monday, October 27, 2008 - 10:52 am:

Joy, I was looking forward to his critiques also. And I've always looked forward to group dances of any kind on the show.

However, this year they have made it blatantly obvious how unfair and ridiculous their *voting* system truly is. It is *supposed* to be a dance competition - one of the judges even used those exact words in the last 2 weeks on the show. It's not - at least, not anymore. It's a popularity contest.

Why else would Cloris Leachman still be on the show?! I mean, sure, give her props for lasting this long, OK? But she is annoying, not funny. And she really canNOT dance. So she made a *real* effort the last 2 weeks and quit strutting around the dance floor like a duck in a comedy. Big deal. She still can't dance.

I have emailed ABC countless times. Like they could care. LOL But really, I think they need to revamp their voting system - as in, viewer votes don't count for 50% of the vote. That's where the unfairness comes in.

Do you guys remember back on American Idol when the fans were voting for the clear *loser* - just to keep him on the show? It's sort of like that now. They are either doing something like that, or there are a LOT of old fans out there watching this 82 y/o woman who really just want to keep her on the show.

So it's no longer about who the best dancer is. And that is why I am less and less excited each week when it comes on. In every past season, I would use up all my phone votes and all my internet votes. I have not voted once this year. Why? Because it won't make any difference.

Each season, I have *picked* a handful of my favorites the first 2 shows - the handful *I* think would be able to win. And as the weeks passed, I was almost always narrowed down to one couple who I truly thought was THE best. Had nothing to do with whether I liked them or not (though I *do* remember posting how much I disliked Heather Mills in her season, but I also admitted that she was doing a good job at that point). This year, after week 1, there were 3 or 4 couples who I thought had the potential to go the distance - I still think those same
couples are THE competition. Cloris is definitely NOT one of them.

It really ticks me off to see her standing there week after week, never getting voted off, when she deserves to be gone-baby-gone.

Sorry for the rant. This used to be one of my most favorite shows. I may well not watch next season. If Cloris is still there after tonight, I'll really be upset.

How in the world is she going to perform in a high paced jive with a bunch of other dancers?

By Marcia on Monday, October 27, 2008 - 12:23 pm:

Karen, I see your hand is better. LOL

I haven't been as into it this year, either, and haven't voted at all. We'll see what happens this week.

By Karen~admin on Monday, October 27, 2008 - 07:32 pm:

Yes, much better, thanks. :)

By Dramamamma on Monday, October 27, 2008 - 11:19 pm:

After her 15 tonight she better be gone!

By Marcia on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 08:14 am:

Did you hear how brutal Carrie Ann was to Cloris? She just told it like it is, and hopefully people will realize how right she is. Even the injured dancers are 100% better than her!

By Kay on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 08:37 am:

During the hip hop group dance, Cloris basically just sat and posed. I'm also so very disappointed in what's happening.

And all those medical mishaps! Julianne is having to leave to have surgery, leaving Cody with Edyta filling in.

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 08:39 am:

wow, Cloris sucks!!

I have not watched it much, but Carrie Ann was right. It's pathetic that Toni Braxton went home for THAT! Wow. Cloris better be going home. She just doesn't seem "all there", does she? :)

Nobody really stands out to me though. Usually there is one team that just wows me. But that's no the case this time.

By Dramamamma on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 03:04 pm:

I totally agreeed with what Carrie Ann said!

Lance and Lacey did REALLY well last night, I was disappointed in Brooke and Warren when in the past they'd always been my favorites.

Tonight should be interesting to see what happens with Cloris.

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 07:49 pm:

Ditto that! Patti, Derrick and Brooke have been outstanding all season, last night was *really* bad for them, due to her injury.

By Dramamamma on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 11:35 pm:

VERY pleased with tonights outcome, long time coming I say... Next week should be interesting. My personal thought is the next to go will be either Susan or Maurice.

I enjoyed having Michael F. as a judge this week, I've always enjoyed him.

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 - 09:22 am:

YES!

I agree. Susan is a very pretty, elegant *lady*, but just too reserved or something, she just never *really* lets loose. Maurice would be my 2nd choice to leave as well.

This week's dances were all a bit disappointing, with the exception of Lance and Lacey. And honestly, I was surprised from early on that Lance wasn't a better dancer, I just expected he would be, like Joey Fatone.

I hope Brooke's injury doesn't prevent her from continuing to be the best - until then, she was, IMO. And I really had high hopes than Cody would do really well - he has definitely improved though.

Michael Flatley is SOOOO gracious and humble! I have always loved to watch the dancing he choreographs. As a judge, he's obviously *too soft*, but of course, the contestants didn't mind that! LOL

I am really happy that for once, an honest elimination was made this season. I think the competition is between Brooke/Derrick, Lance/Lacey, Warren/Kim and Cody/Julianne. In the next week or 2, it *should* be fairly obvious who will go the distance.

By Dramamamma on Monday, November 3, 2008 - 11:20 pm:

Wooohooo, tonight's show was AWESOME! Can't wait for Wednesday night now. :-) It was so nice not to have to see Cloris and her "antics". The group dances were really good, I even enjoyed the first group although the judges weren't all that thrilled with them.

And how about that 30??? WOW!!

I also personally really enjoyed Lance and Lacey's barefoot dance. Cute!

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 07:54 am:

I think Brooke is the classiest and (most importantly) has the most talent. Beyond that, if Cody could focus, I think he and Julianne *could* have gone the distance. And I like Lance and Lacey.....very often I disagree with the judge's views of their dancing, and it seems to me that there's some sort of *friction* or something between Len and Lacey.....

Can't wait for tomorrow night thought - who do you think will get voted off this week??

By Joy~bundles on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 08:11 am:

I thought the judges were a bit hard on Warren and Kym last night - yes, it wasn't his best dance, but I thought they deserved a little better than the 21 points they received. I don't know why, but I just wasn't feeling it with Brooke and Derrick's dance. They definitely did a good job, but it just lacked something for me, and I can't quite put my finger on it. I thought Cody did a terrific job on the group dance! His lines and points and steps were looking really clean and sharp, so I was taken by surprise when the judges said that Lance and Lacey had saved the dance alone (even though they were really enjoyable!). You can tell how much Cody is missing Julianne!! What a sweet kid!! I hope he makes it through tonight - I think he deserves to continue!! Susan Lucci is a really precious and classy lady, but I think her time should be up at tomorrow's elimination.

By Joy~bundles on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 08:20 am:

By the way . . . I always love the group/team dances, but I'm not overly thrilled that last night's team performance scores will be factored into each individual's score. If you get stuck on a bad team, your score is automatically going to go down through no fault of your own. I think they should have done the team dances, but kept the scoring part out of it.

By Marcia on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 09:43 am:

I wonder if they did the team scoring to give the judges more input, rather than people who vote unfairly.
I think Susan might be the one tonight, too. She always seems like she's playing a character to me, rather than just being herself. I'm talking about when she's speaking, not when she's dancing.

By Dramamamma on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 11:11 am:

I grew up watching Susan on AMC and will be sad to see her go but she is my pick to go. :-(

By Karen~admin on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 07:19 pm:

Joy and Marcia - I agree with you both RE: the team dances and the scoring.

Susan is very elegant and graceful, but she is just *blah* most of the time when she dances - as though she just can't break out of the refined role she's cast for herself.

By Dramamamma on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 - 09:55 pm:

Well she's gone... When Maurice was saved first I knew it was going to be her. I think she handled it very well and wasn't surprised at all. She did good to stay in 7 weeks I think.

I was scared for a brief second thinking it was going to be Cody but thankfully he survived. I would have been MAD had it been him because he didn't have his partner this week and it showed, he had been improving up to this point.

Next will be Maurice, I think....

By Joy~bundles on Thursday, November 6, 2008 - 03:07 pm:

I'm also glad that Cody made it through, especially since he was not with his regular partner! He's been doing really well. I agree that Maurice should be the next on the chopping block.

By Karen~admin on Thursday, November 6, 2008 - 05:02 pm:

I also was afraid Cody would have been eliminated last night - clearly he wasn't at his best, dancing with Edyta for the first time, though I do think he did *OK*. I'm glad he's still here for now - isn't Julianne returning next week?

By Joy~bundles on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 - 12:05 pm:

Okay, who else totally loved the dance that Derek and Julianne performed last night?? I LOVED it!! And, it was so good to see Julianne again!! :)

By Karen~admin on Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 09:43 am:

YES! SOOO happy Julianne is back!

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 07:29 pm:

Well...................sadly, it was Cody's turn to go............

I was SOOOO disappointed in Brooke & Derek's *jive* - it SO was NOT up to par! It made me afraid they'd be voted off.

Who do you guys think will win this?

By Marcia on Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 09:57 am:

I missed most of the show, so didn't see Brooke dance. Do you think she's still struggling with her foot? I know that when I did that to my foot, it took many months to heal.

By Dramamamma on Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 02:37 pm:

I'm not sure it could be any of them! I LOVE Lance and Lacey these last couple of weeks. I can't wait until next week.

By Dramamamma on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - 01:59 pm:

So what did you guys think??? I still have to watch Monday's night show but last nights was really good.

I wasn't surprised about the winner though...

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - 06:16 pm:

I'm happy. :) I have thought Brooke was the best dancer from week 1.

Honestly, in the beginning of the season, I was so disappointed in Lance. I expected him to be better than he was. The last 3 weeks, he really came out of his shell and proved himself, and he deserved to be in the finals.

However, I think it should have been down to Brooke/Derek and Lance/Lacey. Warren Sapp is clearly a great entertainer, and given his size, he's a good dancer and surprisingly light on his feet. But if you look at the last 3 weeks in particular, Lance, IMO, was clearly a better dancer - and as they said, most improved - than Warren.

And that is where *my* particular issues with DWTS come in - Warren is a popular guy, he was a football player, and these ex-football players who have been on the show have a HUGE fanbase - and as I've said over and over, it's not a popularity contest - so I think the fanbase votes keep people in the competition when they don't deserve to be there, and they also sway the votes unfairly.

I think Cody suffered when Julianne had to be out for 2 weeks for her surgery - that could not be helped. I had hoped to see the 2 of them in the finals.

But I think the *true* best dancer won last night. Right before they announced the winner, I handed DH the remote and said *Hold this, because if Brooke and Derek don't win, I'm really afraid I might throw it at the TV and break the screen.* LOL But I wasn't kidding. And I also told him if they lost to Warren, I would never watch the show again. And I think I meant that - because Brooke is a much better dancer than Warren. Warren has great fan appeal, he looks likes he's having his own private party when he dances, it's very entertaining to watch him and there is something about his dancing that is captivating - perhaps it's because it appears he IS having a great time and is giving his all.

BUT - again, IMO, Brooke has been the best dancer all season long and she deserved to win. :) :) :)

By Marcia on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - 09:13 pm:

I think that's why they added the extra group dances that only the judges could vote on. They knew what had been happening, and needed to have extra say in what went on. It worked.

By Joy~bundles on Thursday, November 27, 2008 - 12:25 pm:

Yes, all's well that ends well!! Brooke definitely deserved her win!

And, Karen, I totally agree about Lance and Cody!! I thought for sure that Lance would be in the final two, and I was quite surprised when it was Warren (even though I've enjoyed Warren all season!). I thought Cody should've made the final 3 over Warren. :)

By Karen~admin on Thursday, November 27, 2008 - 12:30 pm:

Well, I am absolutely positive they were ignored, but I have emailed ABC numerous times this season, and several times last season about what *I* perceive as unfairness in their voting procedures - specifically the fact that fanbase internet and phone votes count for 50% of the total score. I don't think that's fair. And I said as much to them, not that they care. LOL Each and every time I received a form response. Oh well.................

I have watched the show from the beginning, and I truly love it, and I was happy to see the best dancer win. :)
