Book recommendations for preschool?

Moms View Message Board: Books, Movies and TV Shows: Book recommendations for preschool?
By Enchens on Friday, August 24, 2007 - 04:11 pm:

Can anyone recommend specific books that have a first day of school or first day of preschool theme to them? DS is starting preschool in two weeks, and though we've been talking about it, I feel reading about it would also help. TIA

The Kissing Hand, can't think of the author right now. It's in the bookshelf in Nat's room where she's sleeping! It's a WONDERFUL book about a little raccoon whose nervous about leaving Mommy for the first time and going to school. She kisses his hand (illustrated with a heart in his palm) and tells him that whenever he feels lonely for Mommy while at school, he can put his palm to his cheek to feel Mommy near again. It shows him going to his nighttime school with all the other nocturnal animals. Little raccoon gets the point and gives Mommy a kiss on her hand before he goes, and it shows her comforting herself by holding her palm to her cheek as well after he's gone. It's a PRECIOUS book! I used to do this book on the first day of Kindergarten when I taught, and the kids would put heart stickers/stamps on a die-cut hand after reading the story and talking over new-school worries.

Natalie started preschool last week and we were in the same boat! I wanted to do everything I could to prep her for what it would be like. She actually got the Little People Preschool (she LOVES LP) for her birthday and I swear we played school for 2 weeks straight before she started.
HTH!:)

Thank you. I'll start looking for this book. It sounds precious. And ditto on prepping ds for school. (And prepping myself!)

I was a mess! I barely said 2 words before I left because the tears were there and I knew if I spoke I would start pouring and I didn't want her to see that. She was so oblivious to the emotion of it and totally happy to be there. I thought about this book that day, although she never mentioned it.

Wow, here's a whole list of "First Day of School" books. I thought of the Kissing Hand, too, but didn't remember the name of it, and didn't have time at work, to look it up!
