News coverage

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): News coverage
By Kaye on Monday, July 8, 2002 - 10:59 am:

Do you think in light of 9/11 that our news coverage has changed significantly. I think we went through a time period of being overly cautious and now I think the media is deliberatly hiding things. My example is yesterday I was watching MSNBC and they had a breaking news report of a bomb going on in Georgia, apparently it was in a truck near a miliatary facility, but was not one of theirs. A four year old and another child walked by and it killed the youngest one. I have been dying for more info on this and all the sudden it seems to of diappeared. I am not big into conspiracy theories, but I think quite of bit of terrorist type stuff has been going on that we just aren't told. I guess it is a whole other debate on should we be more informed?

Here is a link for the story you are talking about:

I think the media is so biased. They will grab the headlines with sensationalism and doctoring of pictures. Not to mention "they" keep telling us of all of these "results from the local survey", etc. ;instead of reporting the basic facts.

The latest video taped of the policeman who slammed down the head of a handcuffed suspect. It looks awful, poor man. Did you know he (and his Dad)also has a rap sheet so long it is deemed ridiculous.
Why is someone (with outstanding warrants from another state), happen to be in the parking lot, taking a video? I know when I travel and stop at the gas station, my camera is hidden in my bag so we can pee, get gas and snacks.
And did you know that at the time the police officer through the suspect's head down, the suspect had the policeman's testicles in a vice grip?!?
We never get the whole story. We get what the media gives us. Period.

I don't know, Annie. Sounds to me like you got a lot more information, beyond the original story, that tends to exculpate the police officer. Can I assume you got this additional information from the media?

I agree, the media tends to sensationalize, but because of the many and varying perspectives of the various reporters and newspapers, TV & radio stations, what one doesn't publish another will, filling out any story. That is one of the blessings of the First Amendment.

The first thing I learned in college in media/comm class is that AT LEAST 50% of our news is censored. At least. We are in the dark about many things.

My Father is a former policeman of 30 years.....of course the public isn't going to hear the whole story.....it's all about our tolerance noe, or lack of it, just as described in the other post.....

Ginny,
When I first saw the videotape of the suspect in handcuffs, I was appalled at the way the cop smashed his head down.
Then my hubby told me about this news from the FOX channel, stating the cop's testicles were in the suspect's hands being squeezed.
It could have happened that way. By the video you can't really see the suspect's hands. Then again, why is this being videotaped?????
We believe what we are led to believe by the misinformation and deleted items doled out to us by our liberal media.

When I saw the news coverage of this also, and heard about the man grabbing his testicles. I find that hard to believe, his facial features never changed, nor did he fall to his knees. My DH said that when that is done, automatically you cringe in pain, and sometimes double over. I never saw that on the cops face. I also truely believe there is more police brutalily out there that we are seeing. I have many cops as friends, even the chief of police and I once dated a cop, and if it were any of them, I would say they the cops are guilty of brutalitly.
