Andrea Yates...retrial new post 7/25

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): Andrea Yates...retrial new post 7/25
By Annie2 on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 - 08:15 pm:

With her first trial, five years ago, I was shocked that the jury didn't find her Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.
She was diagnosed for years prior to the murders that she was severely mentally ill. She was severely mentally ill the day after. I don't think she became SANE while she was drowning her babies.
She committed the most horrific act of killing her children but I believe she was so mentally ill at the time that her conviction should show this fact.
I do not think that she should never be out of an institution. She did commit five murders. I do think she needs medical help. If and when she can stabilize her illness, then she should be placed into a criminal facility.
What do you think about this case?

By Luvn29 on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 - 09:29 pm:

I've always felt that anyone that can commit any criminal acts such as murder with no just cause, rape, molestation, etc. must have some kind of mental problem or they could never commit these acts.

No mentally sane person would be able to carry out an act such as this. Period.

However, I do not feel these people should all end up in an insane asylum. There needs to be a special place for these sick, sick people. Whether it be a special unit in a prison, or a facility just for those "mentally incompetent" individuals who commit the worst of crimes.

I also feel they should not be able to go through therapy and be "rehabilitated" and allowed to be released back into society because they are "cured".

what I think is that her husband should have been right up therre with her on trial. I think he holds major responsibility in this issue also. Sorry to segue.....

Ditto Kim.....

ADENA---
"...with no just cause..."??? What would you consider a "just cause to (as you said) rape molest, etc?

I TOTALLY agree with the main point of your first statement. Anyone who can execute this type of crime is mentally ill to begin with, or they would have never done it in the first place.

Yes, she needs help and absolutely YES she should be locked up FOREVER!

Let's not forget about her 5 babies. I believe that that remembrance in and of itself is enough of a heavy and tormenting emotional horror; which should cause all of our concern for her mental problems to fade, thus prohibiting, with passion, the rendering of so such undeserving mercy.

Is there a hell? Is there a hell on earth? Perhaps, her children would cry out, "There is a hell on earth! My mommy took me there!!!!"

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, that's just how I feel. Please don't be offended.

I always thought that she was severely mentally ill, too, until recently. I read an article that talked about how she was caught "coaching" another inmate on how to "act" insane to avoid the death penalty. There is SOMETHING wrong with her...I just don't know what. If you look into her eyes, she looks possessed. (She said that "the devil" told her to kill her children).

Kim, I SO agree with you about her husband. He was clueless and uncaring. He had been told two babies ago not to let her have anymore.

Ditto Kim, and I think Andrea belongs in treatment, but should not go unpunished for her crimes.

I think that the with no just cause comment went with the murder, not the rape etc.

any criminal acts such as murder with no just cause, rape, molestation, etc.

If you look at the comma, it is after the word cause which in my mind seperates it from the rape etc... might not be right or proper, but that is how my mind read it.

By Vicki on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 11:08 am:

Oh, I don't think she should ever be let out again. There are a few things that I think you should never be let out for, crazy or not.

By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 12:08 pm:

thanks for pointing that out, Vicki! I understand now what she meant! :) (I feel better now!)

By Colette on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 03:43 pm:

ditto Kim on the husband.

By Luvn29 on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 05:28 pm:

Thanks, Vicki, for pointing that out for me. I just got home from being out all day with my kids, so this is the first time I am looking at this post again!

There IS no just cause for rape, molestation, etc. That is why I separated it from those. However, I cannot say there is never just cause for murder, because it may be self-defense, etc.

And now, I see with the verdict, that she is only in the mental institution till she is rehabilitated. Ugh. There is no rehabilitation for a woman that sick and a crime so heinous. Yes, it may be decades, they say, but it may not. And should decades be punishment enough for the murder of five children?
