LIVE aid concert

Moms View Message Board: The Kitchen Table (Debating Board): LIVE aid concert
By Annie2 on Friday, September 9, 2005 - 08:32 pm:

I just starting watching this on tv. If this thing becomes a forum to put down this government and place blame I will turn it off.

Why does it take a disaster on US soil for the people of Hollywood, professional athletes and huge corporations, to help their own?

I'm tired of Sean Puff Daddy Combs, Kanye West, Oprah, to name a few, calling the displaced people of color "their own; their brothers; their people" that were left to die by the federal government. By the white, federal government, I might add. I think, IMO, that this is becoming a racial issue by the very people that denounce racism.

Why didn't they help them before this flood? Why didn't Oprah go to NO last year instead of Africa to pass out sneakers, baby dolls and inspire US citizens to help themselves?

Why haven't the sports figures donated $1000. a piece before to help out our poor? They make MILLIONS.

I'm all for helping out, I have donated $ and am giving up my time gathering and organizing a toy drive in our area. BUt we live on a budget. I don't spend millions of dollars a year on toys, cars, hotel suites, vacations. My dh doesn't make 12 million when he completes a project at work.

They are doing this concert to get air time, camera time, to be publicized, just like Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, to name a few do when they go to Africa, Sri Lanka, etc...And to use it as a soap box for their political viewpoints.

I don't know, I am ranting here. I guess they can say the government came in too late but they did, too.

My opinion of course, but placed it here for the debate factor. :)

No debate here... I agree with you!! Celebs (and our own government btw) are always off doing things for the under privledged around the world and we have plenty of that here at home!!

I agree also....

I think it is unfair to say that every celebrity is only doing this for publicity. Unless you are privy to what some one else is thinking why assume they aren't doing it just to help.
Oprah's Angel Network doesn't just help people in Africa, it helps people here as well. Who is to say that some celebs don't make charitable donations faithfully for charities that help people in this country. Their name doesn't need to be connected to it.
How many of us give to a charity faithfully or only give during times like these? I give often, but not as often as I feel I should.
Aren't the people that were affected by this our people? They are Americans aren't they?
I am just wondering why celebrities who are doing a lot to help the victims here are being put down. Would you rather they just didn't help out? Or is it because they are saying they think the government didn't do as much as a lot of people think they should have.

I know many celebrities give money, work for and our spokespeople for many charities, research, etc. There are many of them that do so with a great audience and some that do it behind the scenes.

What I don't like is when they use exposure from a live televised concert, for victims, to spout their political beliefs. Take Kanye West for example. I'm glad he is helping out but don't put down the president of the US on public, live, tv, while my kids could be watching. If he wants to go into an interview, talk radio, CNN, Fox news, GMA, the Today show, buy his own air time and put down our leader, then so be it. There is a time and place for everything.

I didn't like when Tom Cruise went off on meds for post partum depression but he did so in an interview.

I don't care what Sheryl Crowe may say in an interview, it's her time to speak but when she is going to sing a song on Good Morning America to help sell her CD, wearing a deflamatory tshirt against the president, at the same time, is wrong. IMO

I also felt the same way when Clinton was in office, BTW. I'm against President bashing when using one's craft to make money or plea for money. There is time and place for political views and some people take advantage of the situations they are in to get on their soapbox.

That is my main beef about certain celebrities, not all. Also some pull the race card, way TOO soon, when it shouldn't be played at all.

I agree with you Annie. If they want to voice their political views there is right time & place to do it. I misunderstood your original post, but when put the way you just did & I very much agree with you.
