By Jodes on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:42 am:

All I have to say is, noone is making a person go to McDonalds and order the big mac, nor are they forcing the person to drink the soda, it's all about personal choices!

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 02:31 pm:

McDonald's Supersize

A 42-oz soda? I can't even drink that much, in one sitting!

By Frasersmama on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 03:16 pm:

One word - GROSS! That is too much food, even if it were good food, which it is not. I can't even remember the last time I ate Mc Donalds, i think I was in college and hungover:)

By Kaye on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 05:32 pm:

I didn't even know they took it away. My hubby always gets the large size for the drink, boy can that man drink! But heck it is a diet coke or an iced tea, so whatever!

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 05:46 pm:

Anyone notice that their Big Macs are smaller? I guess I hardly ever go to McDonalds...I went just the other day and couldn't believe how small it was in comparison to a few years ago!

By Missmudd on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:39 pm:

For a long time I made the mistake of ordering a large soda from McDonalds. I could never drink it all and could barely just get my hand around it to lift it. I cant imagine what it does to your blood sugar level if you are able to drink one of those bad boys. Since I drink diet I only had to worry about the caffine lol.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 12:25 am:

If I get a value meal, at Taco Bell, I don't even fill my HUGE soda cup, all the way up. I can't drink it all, and it's a waste otherwise. My kids do that, too.

By Feona on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 10:02 am:

We go once in a while. I don't order french fries any more with my sandwich. I am fat enough.

Also ds is allergic to the hydronated oil they use to fry the chicken nugget and the french fries. He gets an itchy back and cough continuously until he gets bendryl.

I am switching him to the baked potato at wendys. It is ridiculous they use this

low grade junk oil.

After seeing the reaction ds has eatting that hydronated oil it disgusts me they use this crap oil.

By Dana on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 02:54 pm:

Speaking of Taco Bell, when I worked at Pizza Hut, one of the guys I worked with said the beef in the Taco Bell freezer is marked "Grade D beef, fit for human consumption",,,,,no proof to this, but I did not hear it second hand, it was straight from the mouth of the guy who saw it. Ever since I can't make myself eat the beef. I now do only bean burritos or tacos.

As for super size, that is just awful. I was so happy to see McDs step up and remove that choice. I also love the option to avoid the fries and go for something better for you (but I can't say those rehydrated apple slices to dip in caramel is a good choice). We very very seldome do fast foods at all. I like Chick-fil-a

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 05:51 pm:

Okay, back to tacos at home, then! LOL! What about the chicken. I more often get the Zest Chicken Bowl.

By Mommmie on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 10:21 pm:

It's better just to stay away from McDonalds and Taco Bell.

By Shann on Monday, July 18, 2005 - 01:16 pm:

dana I have to disagree with the taco bell thing. I worked there for a few years and there meat the one I worked at was a grade A 100% beef nice looking meat but that is the one I worked at.

Re: Taco Bell meat

I agree with Jodes, but for some reason, the fact that these fast food chains continue to put huge portion-size things on their menu really rubs me the wrong way. In fact, it totally disgusts me to see someone ordering a meal that would clearly feed two people and scarfing it down.

I rarely eat fast food - the main reason being my body simply cannot digest the fat in most of it, and also, I have a problem with salt, in that it causes extreme swelling and fluid retention. So the fact that most fast food places - and many restaurants too, for that matter - offer things with a high fat and sodium content automatically turns me away. But those are the very same things that cause major health problems in many, many people, and when they are getting double doses of it at one meal, I just don't see the logic.

By Emily7 on Monday, July 18, 2005 - 04:54 pm:

I also agree with Jodes...to each their own. My DH supersizes his meals & he supersizes mine when he orders for me, but I just don't eat it all. I barely eat what comes with the regular size meal. We only eat fast food once every 2 weeks, and I don't think that is bad.
They put these things on the menu because that is obviously what some people want. I may not understand eating that much, but just like I can't tell you to not drink or not smoke I can't tell you not to eat what you want.

By Kay on Monday, July 18, 2005 - 05:33 pm:

Since I am unable to take a walk in every living person's shoes, I don't feel I can say that one should eat 'this' much or 'that' much. The nutritional information is out there, and it's up to each individual what is best for him/her. If he/she chooses to overeat/undereat, that is a decision that we are free to make in America.

I do agree that obesity is a major health problem, but the restaurants are simply selling what people are more than willing to buy.

By Insaneusmcwife on Monday, July 18, 2005 - 06:11 pm:

I'm ashamed to say, I had a big mac last week and its the same size it was 12 years ago when I worked at Mc Donalds. Maybe they put less lettuce on it? Its still made with the regular hamburger meat.

I was happy to see that they did away with the supersize, that was a bit silly to have that much frys. But to each his own. They do need to make sure that they have nutrition guides at these restraunts. I was told it is required by law but they never seem to have them. I think they should be fined for not keeping them on hand. I know when you are on weight wathers its hard to make a good choice when you don't have the information to look at to figure the points. I don't always carry my book with me but my WW calculator fits in my purse.

I agree with Jodes to , but she already knows that... :) The Nutriton Info at McD's is on the back of their tray mats.

"I do agree that obesity is a major health problem, but the restaurants are simply selling what people are more than willing to buy."

You are right.

And I guess there's no difference there from stores selling cigarettes so people with heart/lung problems can continue smoking (like my own DH did after his heart attack), or stores selling alcohol so alcoholics can continue drinking (my mom did).

All boils down to choices - everywhere you turn things that are *bad* for your health are for sale. It's up to each individual to make a choice.

I guess what bothers me so much is that some people have no control, or set no boundaries for themselves. But that's their choice, so I should just get over it. I'm sure I do things that rub people the wrong way too, for their own personal reasons. LOL

By Dana on Tuesday, July 19, 2005 - 09:03 am:

PamT, thanks so much for the snopes link. I had heard this tale so many years ago and well before computers were in everyone home. I had never even thought to check out snopes. I will feel so much better getting a taco now :). I shared the link w/ DH as we always make comments about "fit for human consumption" as a joke when discusing questionable foods.

By Breann on Friday, July 29, 2005 - 05:48 pm:

No one has to buy the supersized meal. I think the fast food industry is brilliant to come up with marketing strategies such as "supersize" and "kingsize". Too bad I didn't think of it, I'd be sittin' pretty right now!
They sell what people want to buy. It's up to a persons own common sense to decide what to purchase.
We can go to McDonals and purchase a cheeseburger for each of us, and a large french fry and split it 4 ways. Just because someone orders a large fry doesn't mean it's all for them :)
