I am starting the New Year...

Moms View Message Board: Get Organized: I am starting the New Year...
By Conni on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 09:34 am:

as a Flybaby! After all my negative comments about Flylday and how annoying the emails are I decided I needed her help again. :( My house is in shambles and I need the motivation, and the organized routine AND the reminder emails.

So I am now eating my words.

Hopefully in the next few months my home will be clean again. And I will feel good again.

By Kay on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 12:40 pm:

She helped me a lot in keeping my sanity during the holidays, and all the preparations leading up to it! I just have a system of daily going into my email and deleting everything that I don't necessarily need (go to bed, where are your shoes, etc..), and focus on the missions.

The 'laundry' message always reminds me to check on whether my dd has clean uniforms for the next couple of days.

By Palmbchprincess on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 01:47 pm:

Conni, I just rejoined last night!! I did find some of the emails irritating last time, but I, like you, need some motivation!!!

By Tink on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 02:57 pm:

I have been a member but just jumped in and tried to do it all at once. It didn't work and I was so frustrated. So I am just keeping my sink clean all this month. So far my kitchen has been spotless all week and, since I don't have that hanging over my head, I have kept the living areas more cleaned up also. Good luck! I think you just have to take the parts of her system that work for you and ignore the rest.

By Kilara21 on Sunday, January 9, 2005 - 11:22 am:

Isn't there a choice for a daily digest, so all emails will come in one, that way you won't get so many separate emails. I use it and I only get one email from her a day, at most two.

By Kay on Sunday, January 9, 2005 - 12:57 pm:

The only reason I don't use a digest format, is that I like to 'click off' the missions as I do them - I guess it's a sense of accomplishment. (Yes, I'm a listmaker, too. :))

By Conni on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 09:26 am:

Crystal, How is it going with your flylady routines?? I am not doing well yet. I was so far behind. I guess they got their Christmas decor put away by last Sunday. Well, I *just* got finished putting mine away yesterday morning(thurs) and got my furniture moved back. Then I was gone the rest of the day so I didnt do anything else other than laundry, dinner and dishes. I had the boys dust/vacuum/windex the living room while I cooked dinner last night. ;) So that was good. And my dh actually folded a load of laundry AND put some away last night. I nearly fainted when I saw that taking place. Of course I think it was all sex motivated. lol I should be home all day today (Blake doesnt have school on Fridays). So, hopefully I can jump in today and follow along with some of these reminder emails. I really need to start exercising good again--so I hope to make time to do a good work out today as well. (which does cut into my cleaning time. lol)

Anyway, I hope you are getting more done than me. Are you working during the day now? Or are you at home full time again?

I am off to get dressed to my shoes...;)

Have a good day!

By Palmbchprincess on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 05:41 pm:

Me either, I am having some insomnia issues, and then sleeping in, which sends my whole day to crap. I'm at home full time again, (psst... here's a secret, Nate is going back into the Army, so we're busy processing his enlistment now) and it just seems like I've gotten WAY off track. I did get my Xmas stuff put away (read: N did it for me) but it seems like there is no way to keep stuff cleaned with the kids running around. Now that Maddie's leg is better, I'm thinking it should be easier!! I need to finish my control journal... that's today's goal for me! We should check up on each other, since we're both having such a hard time getting in gear! Have a good day!

By Cat on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 07:15 pm:

I'm a fly-baby, too! I usually just delete the emails, though. They do remind me to check my laundry! lol I guess I'm probably doing a modified fly routine. :)

By Kaye on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 08:54 pm:

I also just rejoined. It is stupid to think without a million emails I don't get stuff done, but I don't. The missions are listed on the website, I could just check there, but I don't. This week has gone a lot better with flylady though.

Crystal, how is your control journal coming along? I did mine the first time around, when it came time to move it was such a lifesaver. We went house hunting and all the stuff for the kids was right there, my dad and sm really felt like I had prepared them. I need to double check mine and make sure I got it all updated!

and as for secrets...I am your blog lurker from here :)

By Palmbchprincess on Friday, January 14, 2005 - 10:20 pm:

LOL Kaye!! Cori and I were dying to figure it out!! It wasn't too much of a secret, but I hadn't posted anything here until I told my ex-husband... I can move the kids without geographical limitations, but we wanted him to hear it from us rather than read it here!! (There is a good chance Nate will be re-assigned to Ft. Hood anyway)
Anyway, I got my routines organized for my Control Journal, that's my biggest thing. I love lists, so it makes me feel better to have a "schedule". What else do you guys put in your CJ? I am doing a slightly modified FlyLady routine, I'm not a big clutter person, but need structure to keep me on track. The CJ is always an issue for me, I never know what to do with it! Last time, I just made daily lists rather than a "master", so I had a notebook of tasks. I'd love to know how others do it.

By Tink on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 12:15 am:

I haven't really set up a CJ either. I have the binder with the dividers and some of the lists that Flylady told us to put in there but I certainly don't use it on a regular basis. It just sits in my drawer. So it ends up being a piece of clutter. I have my daily routines in place and have been sticking to them pretty well but I have no weekly routine set up. I don't have a specific day that I deal with paperwork or run errands. Does anyone else do that?

By Kaye on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 08:45 am:

In mine I have the following:

Before bed routinre(which i never follow)
print outs of fl moring routine and afternoon routine
weekly home blessing (my version)
I also printed out the kitchen detailed cleaning list (i guess I had planned to to them all, but never did!

Emergency info (which I now notice is ALL wrong)
it has police, fire, poison control, hospitals, doc, vet, our emergency numbers and school numbers
Then I have house emergency numbers, including insurance company, phone, cell, electric, bank, water, cable. I have acct # written by some of these. (these are up to date *G*)

And that is it. I think I may add a babysitter page, but all the info is in there if needed. The other thing is when I first started out doing it, i wanted it nice and pretty. Well ya know what that was NEVER going to happen! I finally printed out a few things from email or the website and then just hand wrote the other stuff. I put mine in those plastic sleeves so that I could change them out fast or write on them and check off what I did, if I wanted :)

I have read tinks blog too. I read a handful of them a few times a week. It inspired me to have my own, but I am boring. if you want to look i will post it on your blog.

By Palmbchprincess on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 02:42 pm:

Let me know the site!! I'm boring too, though I have an ocassionaly entertaining moment!! I like the idea of the plastic sleeves, I need to pick some up. I actually have soem recipes in my cookbook that are in those sleves, it makes it so easy if I spill something on them.

By Tink on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 05:02 pm:

I'm so glad that you've stopped by. I hope nothing offended you, since I tend to let a whole different side of my personality show! :) I'd love to see your's too.

I have mine in plastic sleeves because I was checking off things as I did them, but I haven't been doing so well with that. I have a few things that I try to do each night like making sure that the kids have their clothes picked out for school and that there isn't any laundry in the washer. I hadn't thought of including my utilities account #'s. Great idea!

By Kaye on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 07:58 pm:

Having all the account info was super handy when we lived up north. Regularly we had weather issues and power outages and the info was right there. Also with moving, very nice. I posted a comment in crystals blog, but it didn't type in the whole thing. It is raven and then the numbers cinco, dos, cinco. (if that doesn't make sense let me know!) I noticed if you search momsview all this pops up and I just don't want my blog associated with here. I know that sounds odd, but it makes me feel safer :)

By Pamt on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 09:28 pm:

Crystal, with 2 y/o twins how on earth do you sleep in? My boys would have been all over me at that age. I've had insomnia recently as well, but have to get up at 6:30 regardless. *ugh* :)

I have to get back on the Flylady bandwagon myself. I had been doing so well until school started back and that has thrown me for a loop. Back to babysteps! One thing I would suggest is hooking up with your local flybaby group. That has really been fun for me and I've met a lot of nice women. We get together and meet and everyone brings their control journal so you can see how different people make them. I was actually brave enough to invite everyone to my house for a control journal work day.

I have a master lists and daily lists, but I never really look at them. I know my morning and evening routines by heart, my weekly schedule, and my weekly home blessing. Doing them is another matter entirely. The best thing about my control journal is my emergency number page. I have our name and address, doctors, dentists, vet, family members, neighbors, water, electric, phone, etc. emergency numbers. I also have included all of our car, home, health, and life insurance info with policy numbers and contact information. If we were to die, then someone could grab my control journal and take care of things. I also have have a plastic folder for me and each of my DS. (DH is responsible for his own stuff--LOL). That folder is where I keep papers for school and projects that I'll need later. For example, my oldest DS has a summer reading assignment each year. When he gets the handout we put it in his folder in my CJ, then he reads the book, fills out the pages, and it goes back in the folder for safekeeping until school starts.

By Palmbchprincess on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 09:30 pm:

I did figure out it was you, and got a chance to read and comment. :)

By Palmbchprincess on Saturday, January 15, 2005 - 10:36 pm:

Pam, I've passed my sleepy head gene to my kids, it's not uncommon for all 3 of us to sleep in. I'm really lucky they are so good about that, because I love to sleep!

Funny thing about the local group, Amy and I met them (before she moved back to LA) and I did not feel comfortable with these women. I felt like I had little in common, and a few of them were odd... oh well!

Conni, how is it going?? Have you gotten everything on track again?

By Conni on Monday, January 17, 2005 - 12:28 pm:

Crystal, I am definately taking baby steps! LOL You all motivated me to get a CJ in order. SO I am working on that today. I shined my sink really good this AM. Did 25 min on the treadmill. Now I'm taking the kids to rent movies since they are home from school today.

Then we'll be heading to the grovery store. Fun, fun!

Hope you are making good progress today!!

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, January 17, 2005 - 04:35 pm:

Today was a bit of a setback, nothing getting done in a timely fashion, but my laundry is done, and I got some cleaning done yesterday. I'm off to do a bit more, hope the grocery goes smoothly!

By Melanie on Monday, January 17, 2005 - 08:09 pm:

Okay Flybabies, I am with you. :) I did take 30 minutes to go through my boys' closet today. I got rid of one garbage bag of junk and organized the rest. It's a baby step, but it felt great to finally be done with that!

By Conni on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 10:38 pm:

Oh boy. This isnt good. I just went to a Scrapbooking party and I can see my focus shifting from cleaning -- to -- scrapbooking. LOL! And stamping.

I can do this, I CAN do this. :)

Glad to see you are gettingsome things done Melanie! :) Did you move?? Didnt you a while back that you were selling your house and moving or was that Andi?

By Palmbchprincess on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - 12:19 am:

Don't worry Conni, you'll be in your routines and organized so you can scrap in peace, guilt-free! Jut take it one routine at a time, are you ready for your morning routine??

By Kaye on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - 08:20 am:

Conni I too am a scrapbooker. One of the things that i did was schedule in a scraping day :) Or I have used it as a reward when I got my work done. Like if I did my morning routine, did one hot spot, and a mission by 1, then I would scrap for 2 hours. Obviously you can't do this everyday. But I have found having a clean house lets me scrap more because I don't have the guilt that goes with it.

By Melanie on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - 12:10 pm:

Conni, we tested the market last year with our house. We had gone into escrow on a house in an effort to get closer to, well, everything! But we love where we are and weren't sure we really wanted to move. So we listed high. We didn't get any takers, so we took it off the market after a couple of months.

As for the scrapping, oh gosh how I would love to let that come ahead of organizing! It's much more fun! LOL. I need to schedule it in somewhere like Kaye has done. I am falling behind and I need to get going again!

Okay, off to do that weekly home blessing hour I haven't done yet this week! :)

By Conni on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 09:47 am:

Ok, thats what I thought Melanie! From the pictures I have seen, your home is beautiful and is set in a beautiful area! Did you get that home blessed yesterday? lol

I sort of had to clean my guest bdrm in order to set it up for scrapping yesterday. But now I have pic's strung ALL over the room. sigh... The ladies at the party told me they all scrap on Friday's at someones house. So maybe I will work it into Friday's schedule like them.

So far this week I have managed to do a couple of things consistantly each day. Next week I plan to add 1 or 2 more things to my routine and keep building up to the whole routine. I started my boys on some *baby steps* as well. They have been pretty helpful this week. Since I informed them if I have to do their jobs they get to pay ME. ;)

Have a good day everyone!

By Melanie on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 10:02 am:

LOL, not a complete blessing. Being a SHE, I did get sidetracked. :) My desk is a major hot spot and I took the time to organize that. But on a good note I can now see the surface of my desk! Woo Hoo!

My boys each have morning and evening routines. I posted the morning routine in the bathroom and the evening routine in their bedroom. The morning routine is make their beds, clothes to the laundry room, brush their teeth and wipe out the sink afterwards (what a difference that makes!), and clear their hotspots. Their nighttime routine is clothes to the laundry room, hotspots, run around the house and put away things out of place, wipe out the sink after brushing, and lay out clothes for the next day. Each routine takes between 5 and 10 minutes and makes a huge difference in the house! (And I have also charged them for doing their chores as well. The youngest doesn't care, but the oldest sure does! LOL).

I used to have a group that scrapped every other Friday. It was wonderful!! But right now we are all on different preschool schedules with our kids and we just haven't managed to pull the group back together again yet. I want to, though. It does help having a set time dedicated to doing it.

I see you use your guest room as your scrapping room as well. How do you have it set up? Do you manage to keep that room pretty well organized? Ours is currently set up as a guest room first and a scrapping room second (Bed, two dressers, nightstand, no scrapping furniture). I want to switch that since I don't even have a table to work on in there! The room just ends up absolutely trashed after a while. It also ends up being my "catch-all" room. I think every 5 minute room rescue I have ever done has been in that room. LOL.

By Palmbchprincess on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 01:00 pm:

Conni, thats the way to go. I'm getting up to a full routine, and we went grocery shopping yesterday. Nate always hates going for groceries, because it usually takes forever, but it was very quick and streamlined, since I had inventoried all our food, and made a complete list. :)

By Conni on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 04:50 pm:

Hey Crystal(or anyone) I have a stupid question. When Flylady says to go shine your sink--does that mean completely bleach/wash it out again? Or just wipe it out?

Good for you taking *inventory* of your food and making a list!! Cool.

By Conni on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 05:03 pm:

Melanie, the guest bdrm is set up primarily as that-- a bdrm. I have all of my pictures stored in the dresser in their (well almost all of them). I put a card table off to one side of the room with a large rubbermaid tub underneath it that stores all of my scrapping *stuff*. So its not set up fancy for scrapping at all. All my pictures are strung across the bed now. lol I dont really have much scrapping stuff yet. So I can see needing to get more storage in the near future as I get more tools/albums/pages/etc... Not sure what I will come up with for that. I really like the stamping stuff too.

I am also in the process of looking for a sewing machine and table and it will get crammed in that room too I am sure. lol! Luckily we dont have guests that often. :)

By Kaye on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 05:29 pm:

When I read go shine your sink, I take it as make sure you don't have dishes sitting in it. I rinse it and dry it with a paper towel. I do major clean it a couple of times a week.

Scrapping rooms...I finally made it out of the playroom/basement into the study. My hubby built me a desk. Very simple. 4 pieces of wood together with brackets. We bought a piece of maple covered board and made a flat top and then sides (think of an upside down u) then put a piece on the back for support. Home depot cut our wood. Anyway, under it I put two sets of plastic drawers, then latter added another set of smaller ones for stamping stuff. Then on topI have two desk top ones. I mostly have plenty of space, I do have to make sure I clean it off regularly. The only thing that I miss is something to hold 12 x 12 papers. My drawers won't quite hold them. I don't have many though.

By Conni on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 11:18 am:

Thanks Kaye!! I felt dumb asking. I was doing what you do. I have consistantly kept my sink shining this week. I am kind of proud of something so stupid. LOL! I have done pretty good this morning. Bed is made, laundry is going, dishes done, sink shining, and I cleared off 2 piles of papers on my bar. woohoo!!

Your scrapping room sounds awesome! I am going to remember your U shaped table. That sounds great. You know the albums I ordered are 12x12 so I wonder how I will store them?? Glad you pointed that out.

I am late for a date with my treadmill! HAve a great day!

By Conni on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 02:18 pm:

Ok, I have another quick flylady question... When you are working in your *zone* for 15 minutes, like bathroom/laundry rm, what if you have more than one bathroom? I have 2.5 baths. But this week I only worked on my master bathroom. Was I suppose to work 15 minutes in each bathroom plus 15 minutes in the laundry room each day?

By Pamt on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 04:42 pm:

Conni, I usually take that to mean every bathroom. However, FLylady really recommends NOT doing zone work until you are really consistent with babysteps, morning/evening routines. Otherwise you'll get stressed and crash and burn. When I DID have my routines down then I would do the daily mission each zone, but alas I'm back to babysteps again. *sigh*

By Kaye on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 05:08 pm:

when I do missions, I pick the bathroom in the most need :) But like one was toss out the shampoo bottles, well you know that doesn't take me 5 minutes per bath, so i did them all. I guess I look at it this way. I never did any of the missions before, so if i only do one of 4 bathrooms, then oh well, it is one cleaner. I am still hit or miss whether I do them or not. My routines are not consistent, but better. I guess actually I have a routine, I just should add more to it...LOL. Like laying out the kids clothes should be in the evening routine, but I do it in the am. If I switched then I would have an extra 10 minutes in the morning. I think for me I really live by, it didn't get this way in a day, you won't fix it in a day. I will say that I keep my house company friendly more days than not where it used to always be chaos. I do still have to do the occassional big clean. Like on wednesday last week I spent 4 hours in the playroom. I rearranged furniture, etc. I enjoyed doing it, it really need cleaned and vacuumed. But I did no zone work the rest of the week.
