Moms View Message Board: Get Organized: Step by Step
By Loving2 on Thursday, January 31, 2002 - 09:31 am:

I'm issuing all of you a challenge today because I thrive on Challenges! I've organized my upper floor, I feel in control of it, but my basement is kicking my butt! I need to get motivated and make it a little more fun.

I challenge you to sort and organize just one drawer or shelf or box today! You'll need 2 boxes/baskets or containers and a trash can.

1.)Take everything out,

2.)toss the junk, be ruthless!

3.)take what goes into another room into that room (basket #1--when it's ready, walk around the house putting the stuff away),

4.)#2 basket is for donations/yardsale, put it in a spot designated for that purpose

5.) Clean the shelf/drawer/box

6.) Put back only what is meant to be in the drawer/box/shelf

7.) Put the empty baskets away--empty the trash can if needed--put away the cleaning supplies :)

8.)Optional, if you need something for this shelf/box/drawer make a note to buy it (bookends for books, lock for medicines, divider trays for silverware, tupperware container for Legos, etc.) *Use it IMMEDIATELY after you buy it!

One thing I learned from organizing my upstairs--the rest of your house will begin to look BAD! LoL, when you take something to the room it's supposed to be in you don't have a spot for it because you haven't organized that room yet! Eventually it comes together though, trust me :)

I am on a role. If you can over today Susan, you could see the floor in my room, both family rooms, all bathrooms and the Laundry room. Kinda scary but boy is hubby happy. He did the organizing of all the kitchen cabinets last week. YEah......:)

By Loving2 on Thursday, January 31, 2002 - 06:45 pm:

Great Stori!! So did you remember the color of your floors? LoL What did you do with all the stuff? Nice of hubby to do those kitchen cabinets :) That's what I did today---my canned and dried food cabinets. They weren't too bad since they'd been organized before, so this was more of an upkeep type thing. Found some stuff I'll never use so it's set to be donated :)

My Challenge is still on ladies!!! So far Conni and Stori have posted that they did the Challenge, anyone else up for it?

By Conni on Thursday, February 7, 2002 - 11:43 am:

Well, I cleaned out my pantry yesterday. Boy was I surprised how much I threw out!!! Feels good to have that done. Today I think I am going to clean out some cabinets in the laundry room.

Helped the boys do their chores yesterday morning so we could play in the snow faster. lol Then they helped me dust and vacuum the living room and keep the laundry going. Such good boys.

I really need to clean out my refrigerator (it is REALLY bad). But I need some encouragement. Susan?? I just cant get motivated to do it.

Also, need to FILE about 20 stacks of papers and need to clean out my garage (now this is awful!! I should post pic's!! lol) And you know what?? I still havent cleaned out my purse!!! sheesh. Help!

By Loving2 on Thursday, February 7, 2002 - 11:51 pm:

Ok Conni! Time to get organizing!!!!

I found lots to get rid of from my cupboards too--stuff to donate. I mean if we haven't eaten it in 6 months we're not going to right?! Conor helps me do laundry--I love it. He puts the clothes in the washer and hands them to me from the dryer. No bending over for this lazy mom! :)

How about the boys help you clean out your purse? Make it a family affair. Maybe they could clean out their backpacks? Just dump it all out on the table, pull the trashcan close & get busy! Maybe some icecream sundaes as a reward?

I want to make you a deal with that filing! I need to get started on these boxes down here (nope STILL haven't even started!). How about if we both break down what needs to be done (like the steps for the cupboard/shelf/drawers) and then we e-mail each other with our steps? It's pretty overwhelming to say I need to file 20 stacks of papers (or sort through 30 boxes), but if we use steps I think we can get started. Like step #1: Clear off a space to spread the papers on, sort them into piles, whatever. My 1st steps will be to get a table down here and some empty boxes. If you're game, I'll e-mail my steps to you tomorrow because I want to get started this weekend while dh is home to help watch the boys.

Let me know if you want to do it Conni! jsball@plains.net

Oh, and hey, can't that garage wait till spring? But you could start listing the steps now! :)

By Conni on Friday, February 8, 2002 - 09:37 am:

LOL--Yep the garage could wait til spring I suppose. But maybe if I do one thing a week between now and spring it wont be so overwhelming.

Ok I am going to email you later today! : )

Well does redoing the whole bathroom count? This is my new project. From paint to new light fixtures and faucets....I am getting alittle creative..This is scary.>LOL> :)

By Feonad on Saturday, February 9, 2002 - 09:41 am:

I organized one bookshelf. Slow but steady!

By Loving2 on Monday, February 11, 2002 - 10:46 am:

I didn't hear from you Conni! Did you get anything done? I got *started* :)

WTG Stori and Feonad!!! And Stori, that's why it took me a year to organize upstairs--I did the "whole" thing :) Still working on finishing my kitchen.

By Loving2 on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 08:10 pm:

Conni??????? Are you sick or something? Hope you are okay! I didn't do so well on my intentions. Pretty badly actually :( I need serious help....therapy....a new empty house....something. I think I will post a picture sometime in hopes of publicly shaming myself into changing my ways!!!!!!!!!

By Terri0930 on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 09:02 pm:

Dh is leaving Sunday for work, so Monday is my day to start getting organized. I cleaned and switched my bedroom furniture around when he went for the interview. I get more done when he isn't around. He just gets in my way, and asks why I do it that way.

So Monday I'm with you ladies, and I think I will start with the kids bedrooms.

By Catherin on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 01:05 am:

Loving 2 I had to post to this one. I got the kids rooms DONE except the book shelves (3 small ones)(this includes dressers and closets PLUS I went through all their toys and tossed any broken ones and organized the rest as I got BIG rubbermaid roughneck totes today for $6 (the 68 Litre kind) My dd's room is FINISHED. My room is FINISHED. Both Bathrooms FINISHED. Kitchen drawer CLEANED OUT AND ORGANIZED (this was my junk drawer).

My goals for this week. Clean ALL kitchen cupboards. Since we just moved in I am still figuring out what works well in that area. I have two cupboards that will stay the way they are but want to change around the rest. I also have plans to do the rest of the office this week as I got it 50% done :)

QUITE PROUD OF MYSELF I MUST ADMIT ;)

By Conni on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 09:35 am:

SUSAN, where are you? Are you ok???

GOOD JOB CATHERIN!!

By Loving2 on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 11:58 am:

Conni, I have just been extremely busy, playing catch-up, and out of town. I'm okay---what about you? Are you feeling better? Get that house back in order?

I actually worked on the pile of junk in the basement yesterday! Whoo-Hoo!!!! Another good session at it and it will be done. Then on to the so-called Storage room. But boy do I feel good :)

And YEAH Catherin!!!!! It just feels so darn good doesn't it? You are on a roll girl---Keep it up! I used rubber bins in my Kids room too---Yes, they still get everything out in a mess, but it's more easily put away. And sometimes I lock the door and only bring out ONE container. I am such an evil mom! :)
