Any advice on smelly carpet?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: Any advice on smelly carpet?

We just bought a house and we didn't realize until we moved in and I shampooed the carpets that the living room carpet smells like dog pee so bad. Every time I shampoo is seems to get worse. I guess since I am stirring it all back up to the surface or something. I have tried shampooing with a $300 shampooer 5 times and the smell still won't come out. First I did it with a deep cleaning solution 3 times. Then I tried with pet odor shampoo and then I tried with pet odor mixed with amonia. Still smells so I tried using febreeze every day for a week and still smells. Is my only option is to replace the carpet or is there something else I can do?

If animals have urinated on the carpet, then the pad has absorbed it and shampooing the carpet won't get rid of it. Sounds like the pad is ruined. I don't know if Nature's Miracle will help that. Sorry, no advice, but I *do* think you might need to replace the pad, if not the carpet too.

I agree with Karen. If you have tried all of that with no results, I think your going to have to replace the carpet and padding. I just hope it didn't go down to the sub floor!!

My dh used to lay carpet. If cleaning the carpet that many times, has not gotten the smell out, then it is in the padding. There is nothing you can do, but replace the carpet and pad.

Try Natures Miracle just like Karen said. It takes a few days to work but it should do the job...good luck.
