Summer Vacation

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: Summer Vacation

LOL! I know it's only March, but our summer vacation is coming up quickly. We just recently got it scheduled for the 2dd week in June. We leave the day after school is out. It is the only time we could schedule it. We are going to South Dakota.

De Smet, SD

Laura Ingalls Wilder stuff. We want to see their house and the cottonwood trees that her Pa planted. We are staying in a b&b, because the motel was already filled up!

After we leave De Smet, we might stop in Mitchell briefly, to go to the Corn Palace.

We will have to stop at Wall Drug, too, just to say we've been there! I have known about Wall Drug, since I was a kid!

Then on to Rapid City, SD. Mount Rushmore, Badlands, Black Hills, Custer State Park, bison, burros, prairie dogs.

Hulett, WY to view Devil's Tower. I'm dating myself, but Devil's Tower was featured in the movie called Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Since the vacation actually got scheduled and the hotels have been booked, we are soooo excited now, about our trip!

Last year, we went 12 hours east and this year we are going 12 hours west! I have never been farther west than the edge of Minnesota, or St. Louis, MO. (Okay, I went to Mexico, but I flew over those western states, so I don't count it.)

I have relatives who live in Rochester, MN and everytime I visit their house, part of me wants to keep going west on I-90, instead of turning north to go to Rochester! So, this year, I finally get to do it!

To go to SD, we leave our house, turn west and basically just keep going west, until we get there! (except that we have to turn north to go De Smet)

Devil's Tower would be cool to see... I LOVED "Close Encounters!" (Richard Dreyfus is sooo cute...) You will love the west! There's a certain beauty about the prairie and the desert that gets overlooked, I think. Sounds like a fun vacation! :)

Hope you enjoy your trip! Be sure to take pics - have your DD who takes the great pics take some so we can see them.

I don't think we'll be taking any trips this summer. :( There are too many things going on and Dh isn't going to be able to get away. The best I can hope for are a few daytrips.
So...I guess I'll have to live vicariously through all of you. Have fun anticipating and planning! June is closer than you think! :)

Sounds like FUN! My parents have toured that area with their Goldwing (motorcyle) club. I have an awesome photo of them with the Badlands in the background. They said they parked on the side of the rode amongst a herd of bison! I wouldn't be that bold. LOL!

Wow! Sounds like you have a full itinerary! That's only a couple of months away :) Have a fun time!!!

One of Gary's friends told him to make sure we have enough planned, because when he went to SD, after they saw Mt. Rushmore, he was bored! LOL! I don't see how we could possible be bored. Besides the main attractions, there are 49 Family Approved Attractions, we could go to, also!

My 16yo was all excited about going to Old McDonald's Farm. You get to feed and possibly bottlefeed various little animals. They had big draft horses and little miniature horses, that will definitely interest the younger daughter, too! We could also go to a natural history museum and see a skeleton of a T-Rex. I would like to see that, myself.

We have our summer vacation already booked too. We are heading east to visit family (not exactly a vacation sometimes, but we'll have to make due).

Our plane tickets are bought and the cottage is booked. We are staying at a cottage at the beach for 2 weeks then we will be based out of DH's parents for the third week...I am so thrilled about that (NOT). During that week we will do some day trips so it shouldn't be too bad. I just hope DH gets a handle on his depression before going back. Staying at his parents is stressful enough for me. He is usually able to act as a buffer. I don't know if he will be able to this year or not.
