My friend was cheated THROUGH her ebay account

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: My friend was cheated THROUGH her ebay account
By Kim on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 07:48 pm:

It was for $6,000 and sent to her directly through ebay, transactions through ebay, etc. They told her a third party breached somehow....guess my friend had to take the bait first. It was for a motorcycle from Rome. Be careful with your online purchases! She is so sick tonight.....

Kim, I don't want to sound rude but I don't understand. Did they take $6000. out of an account of hers? Did she buy something for 6000 and not receive it? Maybe its a Mommy brain kicking in but I just wasn't sure what happened.

Do you mean her paypal account? You can't take money from an ebay account. Did she buy something on ebay? Did someone hack into her paypal account? More information please.

Man that would suck. I got cheated out of only $42 was upset. I won something and then after paying and all that ebay sent me an email not to pay for the item. I was like great already paid. I ended up disputing it through paypal and did get my money back but I don't think they cover that high. Man I would be way upset. She should have put insurance or whatever it is called through paypal on it. I think I read some where that if you pay for some kind of insurance then you will be covered for high payments like that.

Oh I was going to ask if she looked at their feedback. I for sure wouldn't make a purchade like that with someone with no or bad feedback.

I believe that if you pay using a credit card through paypal then you are automatically covered for the purchase amount.

I too am wondering what the details of this transaction were. I have bid on a few things on eBay from sellers from China, and got emails from eBay that the auctions had been pulled and all bids were null and void.

IMO, the best thing to do is to NOT bid on items from anywhere except the US and Canada. And ALWAYS ALWAYS check the feedback!

And if she used Paypal, using a credit card, she will be covered.

I have to wonder also as Yvonne posted, was her account hacked??

By Kim on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 05:24 pm:

I don't know all of the specifics yet, but they were directly hacked through ebay, bidded on the bike, all of the links worked, etc and it was all linking back to the person that cheated them. "Ebay" told them how to handle the transaction and that they would have their bike in hand before the money, held by ebay because it was such a large purchase, would then be transferred. They kept copies of everything and I am guessing this person is good because when she called the real Ebay they asked if it was the guy from Rome. She had to call the FBI and police to make a report, but I know they will never see that money again. They should have been more careful, but she did get hacked through her ebay account!

After they found out she went online and found the item closed with no bidders.

It has to be she paid through paypal. You do not pay via ebay account. You bid through ebay and pay through another method. She needs to dispute the charge through paypal.
Or--Are you saying they used ebay as a escrow service? Even if they did, they still had to pay through paypal or credit card. There has to be a recourse for them. Unless you pay via check, mo, or cash--there is always recourse.
I always pay through paypal and use a credit card---this gives me TWO methods of recourse---through paypal and through the credit card co.
I have used it. Once a seller shipped a depression glass bowl in a box with no packing, nothing. I received a box full of broken glass. She said too bad. Credit card company said no way and money was back in my account immediately.

Yvonne is right, Ebay doesn't accept any payments. They own Paypal now, so they do have something to do with the payment process unless it's check, or money order.

By Cocoabutter on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 08:25 pm:

Ohhh, I bet it was a PHISHING scheme. You know, where you get directed to a fake website that looks original? She went to an "EBAY" site and she entered in her payment info and ended up giving it away to an identity thief!

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 10:39 pm:

Whatever it was, I hope she used a credit card. If she did, she needs to write to her credit card company immediately, and send it Certified Mail, disputing the charge. That's the only recourse she has right now. If she used a bank wire transfer, she should go into her bank Monday and report it. Same if she wrote a check. Money Order - she's out of luck.

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 10:41 pm:

Kim, I agree with Lisa. I doubt her eBay account was hacked. I'll bet she clicked on a link in an email - which one should never, never, never do if it involves money.

I am very sorry for your friend.
