Good Movies for a Slumber Party?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: Good Movies for a Slumber Party?
By Tunnia on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 06:59 pm:

My dd will be turning 10 in the next couple of weeks and she wants to have a "Night at the Movies" slumber party. There will be four girls ages 9-10 and I plan on renting 2-3 movies for them to watch. Does anyone have any movie suggestions for this age? My dd has suggested a movie called "High School Musical", but I have never heard of it. Any one know if this movie would be appropriate for 10yos? TIA:)

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 07:11 pm:

My DD LOVES High School Musical!!! (she is 12) I've watched it and it is cute.

It's been a while, and so I suggest this carefully, but I remember REALLY liking 13 going on 30 with Jennifer Garner.

One of my favorite movies is "While You Were Sleeping" with Sandra Bullock. It's a good clean movie but I don't know if kids that age will like it.

Also, my DD loved Motocross, a Disney movie about a girl who does motor-crossing, and Herbie, Fully Loaded.

I hope these help.

Personally, I'd stick with G rated movies to be on the safe side. As a parent myself, I wouldn't want my kids watching PG movies that I hadn't been able to screen first.

This web site might be helpful.

I had never heard of "High School Musical" so I did a search. It's a movie on the Disney Channel.

High School Musical

By Vicki on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 08:25 pm:

Oh my gosh, High School Musical is dd's FAVORITE thing right now. She has the CD and everything. However, it isn't out in stores yet. Just on the Disney channel...

Princess Diaries and especially Princess Diaries II. The 2nd one actually has a slumber party in it. Cute.

By Imamommyx4 on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 08:27 pm:

Oh, and I'd tell the mom/dads what you do choose to be polite. I personally like to know what my kids watch(ed).

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 08:34 pm:

I LOVE the Princess Diaries movies!

By Sandysmom on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 08:37 pm:

Nix the "While you Were Sleeping" (What was I thinking!!) it's been a while since I've actually sat down to watch a movie.

By Vicki on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 08:40 pm:

I LOVE the Princess Diaries movies too. LOL The first one is my favorite though....

By Kate on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 09:28 pm:

Hi Tunnia! I remember from last year that we have daughters so close in age! Mine turns ten on April 3rd, and she's having a slumber party with just four girls, too!! Hers is March 31 to April 1, how 'bout yours? She wants to watch Milo and Otis...that was her number one pick. Parent Trap (I prefer Hailey Mills) is a good option, too. Perhaps 'Ice Princess'? My DD might even want good old 'Monsters Inc.'

By Annie2 on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 09:42 pm:

Dreamer came out yesterday. It's about a girl (Dakota Fanning) and her race horse. It might be a good choice since some of the girls may not have seen it yet.

I see nothing wrong with that age group seeing PG rated movies. I know most G's would be too babyish for 9/10 year olds.

By Missbookworm on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 10:33 pm:

Dreamer was a great movie!

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 - 11:30 pm:

For my daughters 10th we had a princess diaries marathon. They watched both movies and made tiaras. They all had a ball! Everything was in a princess theme.

Music of the Heart

Woman (Meryl Streep) teaches the violin to inner city New York kids.

Rated PG for mild language and sensuality. The overall message is about success and music being good for kids. I can't remember the language or the sensuality, at this point. I love listening to the kids play their violins.

Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken Rated G

Tagline: The inspiring true-life adventure of a courageous young rebel who defied the odds...and won.

Plot Synopsis: Sonora Webster, a runaway in the thirties, desperately wants to be a diving girl- a girl who rides on a diving horse as it drops from a forty-foot platform into a deep pool of water. She finally achieves her dreams, when it seems that it's all going to be taken away from her- she goes blind from an accident.

This one is good for the horse-lover at your house! We have rented this one more than once, for slumber parties.

Princess Diaries is another good choice!

Thank you all so much! I am definitely going to look into some of these movies and check out the movie mom website (thanks for the link, Trina:)). Oh, and what a great idea about letting the parents know what movies the girls will be watching! I'll definitely do that.

Kate, I had forgotten that our girls are so close in age until you reminded me. What a memory you have!:) Erin will be 10 on 4/5 and her party is 3/31-4/1 too! What all are you doing for your dd's party? Erin wants to order pizza for dinner and have make-your-own ice cream sundaes for dessert instead of a birthday cake. She also wants me to make indoor smores and popcorn for snacks while they watch 2-3 movies. We are going to make lip gloss for a craft (Erin's idea). I think that should be enough activities to keep them occupied for the evening.

By Tayjar on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 10:16 am:

Here are some that the girls consistently watch when the stay over. They are 9-10 y/o.

The Parent Trap, the one with Lindsay Lohan
Cheetah Girls
Cinderella Story
Cheaper by the Dozen
High School Musical
Grease
The Pacifier
Ice Princess
Freaky Friday

By Jewlz on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 10:59 am:

saw "sleep over" last night its really good.
sorta a modern day cinderella ... about some girls that are on a scavenger hunt to get the best table at lunch when they attend high school and in the end the nerdy skater girl gets the boy and everyone lives happy ever after ... very funny.

By Kate on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 03:59 pm:

Tunnia, DD wants pizza also, and instead of cake and ice cream we're just doing ice cream cake. Not sure about snacks...probably popcorn, milkshakes, trail mix or rice krispie treats... In the AM my DH will head out to get donuts for everyone. When do you plan on 'lights out'? What is your time slot? We're 5:30 to 10:00. Do you have four GUESTS or four kids total WITH your daughter? We're THREE total at the moment, as we haven't heard from one girl. We only invited three, and then got a decline, so we had to quick invite someone else! That's the problem with only inviting a few. If just one person can't come you've vastly decreased the guest list! I need to hear back from the last girl or we won't have time to replace her, either!! That sounds so awful, but I don't have the room (or the patience!!) for more than that many kids, so if one can't come we do tend to 'replace' them. If we invited a lot of kids, a few who couldn't come wouldn't matter.

Lip gloss sounds fun...how do you do it? I hadn't intended on any sort of games or crafts (other than their charades or a fun board game they want to play. But the lip gloss intrigues me. Please share!

By Tayjar on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 04:08 pm:

Another fun idea is to get them some house slippers and let the girls decorate them with jewels. They can just hot glue them on. We've also taken flip flops and tied fleece to them. Or, have them decorate picture frames and then you can send a picture of the girls at the sleepover to them as a thank you. You can also get your daughter a pillowcase and let the other girls sign it.

By Kate on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 04:43 pm:

Is Princess Diaries 2 better than 1? Do you have to see 1 in order to see 2? Which would you recomemnd...Princess Diaries or Ice Princess?

Another cute one, Tunnia, is Fly Away Home.

By Vicki on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 05:29 pm:

I like Princess Diaries 1 better than 2. And no, you wouldn't have to see 1 for 2 to make sense, but it is better to watch both. 1 tells how she became a princess.

By Bellajoe on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 05:47 pm:

My 5 and 6 year old LOVE the High School Musical movie. It is definitely fine for kids of any age to watch. It is really cute and fun.

Have fun!

By Kate on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 08:38 pm:

What is High School Musical about? I went to Trina's link, but it didn't really tell me much. I was looking for a plot synopsis but couldn't find one.

By Tunnia on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 09:46 pm:

Thanks again, ladies! I appreciate all your help! Dd and I have narrowed the list down to the following movies in order dd would like to see them (it's up to Blockbuster which 3 or so movies we end up renting):

1. The Princess Bride
2. Raise Your Voice
3. The Princess Diaries
4. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
5. The Lizzie McGuire Movie
6. High School Musical

Kate - I haven't really set a "lights out", but will probably let them stay up until about 11pm. I figure what's a slumber party if you don't get to stay up a little late, right? Besides, with lights out at 11pm they still won't go to sleep for another hour or two after that. The time slot for Erin's party is 6pm Friday to 10am Saturday. My dh gets home around 5:30pm so I figured I'd give him a few minutes to shower, change, and unwind before we were invaded with little girls. I'm not sure yet how many of them are coming since the invitations just went out. I love kids, but I figure that five total is about all I'm willing to handle at one time.:) One of my dd's classmates invited all the girls in the class for a slumber party earlier in the year. I think that her mom must have been nuts!

I haven't made the lip gloss before, but the recipe sounds really easy. I was going to order a kit, but one of the teachers I work with told me that she has made it from the recipe in one of the teacher resources books before with her dd and it worked really well. I'm going to make a copy of the recipe tomorrow and I'll post it on here for you. You use Crisco and koolaid and you use empty film canisters (which fits in with the movie them well). I'm going to buy some stickers for the girls to decorate the canisters with and I already have a gold paint pen they can use to write their names on them. I am going to go to Walmart tomorrow afternoon and ask them for some empty canisters since I only have two and I'm going to let the girls make two or three flavors.

I hope your dd's slumber party goes well! We'll have to share "war stories" after they are over.:)

By Mommyof5 on Thursday, March 23, 2006 - 09:51 pm:

I have a dd turing 10 in April (4/19) and she is planning a sleepover birthday party as well. Must be the thing to do for 10 year olds this year!

By Janet on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 12:00 pm:

Definitely tell the parents. "Princess Bride" is a good choice EXCEPT for the part where Diego Montoya gets ready to run through the bad guy ("I want my father back, you blankety-blank-blank-blank!"). We showed that movie at a church youth group function and got some complaints. "High School Musical" is really good, and the "Lizzy McGuire Movie."
