Stupid cat (question)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: Stupid cat (question)
By Kaye on Friday, March 17, 2006 - 11:32 am:

I have a 5 year old cat. She has mostly been a pleasant cat. About 3 months ago she started peeing in places she shouldn't. Her litter box wasn't super clean, I just started taking an anatomy class where we are disecting cats etc. So okay move on, we do a better job, life is grand for a month or so. About a week ago she started pooping in odd places (no pee that I have noticed). Not a big deal, maybe once a day. For the most part it has been in an upstairs bathroom where her litter box used to be. So alrightee, something to deal with, but not awful. WELL until last night, we were gone for the day, came home and I had a lovely pile of crap on my leather couch. NOT cool, really! So I clean it up, spray it down. I have guests, maybe she is ticked. Well this morning as I was sitting on the couch she hops up next to me and pees on the couch, while I am sitting there. Any suggestions?

My first thought was two things:

Has she been checked for a UTI?

Maybe it's behavioral? (Guests could cause it. Anything else happening in or around the house or any big changes recently?)

Another thing, if she's peeing in one spot and you don't see it before it dries or it's not cleaned up all the way, cats will have a tendency to go in the same spot because they smell the urine from the last time. Just something to think about.

It sounds behavioral I went on vacation for a couple of weeks and when I came home my cat also started doing that.It lasted a month and just stopped. She sat one time and pooped on my favorite slippers while she was beside me

I would take the cat to the vet to rule out UTI or other medical cause first, if she's healthy then you know it's behavioural.

I made an appointment for the cat. I am actually going to drop her off, let her be seen and pick her up tomorrow. We all need a break!

The upside of her peeing right beside me, is I was able to pop her on the nose and immediately say no. And then clean it up. This is the first time that I know of on the couch. I actually hadn't caught her peeing anywhere etc once on a suitcase.

Oh how i love this cat about now (hope you can see the sarcasm!)

She knows what you're doing in anatomy class... LOL

You said that the she has been peeing in the area where the cat box USED to be in the upstairs bathroom. If you moved it, she is probably mad at you. Besides keeping it clean, it has to be in relatively the same spot where she is used to it being. You mess up her world if you decide to rearrange her bathroom without her permission. :)

A new cat box and clean litter may help her problem. And put it back where she had it. :)

I had this problem a while ago, too. My cat had been going outside for a long time, and then as she got older, she lost interest in going out, and then she didn't use the box like she should. I had her tested, and the vet said she was fine, but that she is extra picky about her bathroom now, so I needed to get scoopable litter and clean it out EVERY DAY. That solved our problem.

Well apparently she has blood in her urine. They are running some cultures. I pick her up tomorrow (they will keep her tonight).

I moved the box 2 years ago, because it didn't work out in the boys bathroom..LOL.

I think some of her issue might be medical, but i also think alot of it is behavioral, like she doesn't like guest and she is VERY picky about her litter these days.

Oh, well, at least you found something out!

Sorry, I guess I should have asked how long it has been since you moved the box.

Good luck with kitty!
