Sewing 101 ?!

Have any of you ladies made your own duvet cover/bedding/pillows/curtains? I am considering giving it a try. Although I am fond of just walking in a store picking out what I want and going home... so much easier. lol I looked at material today and of course all the material I like is very expensive. I dont think it would end up being any cheaper in the long run if I try to make this stuff my self.

Do you have a favorite fabric store that might be online? Do you have a favorite shop you like to buy your bedding at? I cant seem to find anything I like?! I was thinking about getting a black duvet (or attempting to make one). Maybe do bedroom in taupes, black, and green or red or chocolate brown??? I dont know. Any ideas?

Thanks! I feel like I need to decide on bedding before I paint my walls. Just in case... I have to get new bedding anyway- because ours is horrible!

One time I sewed some sheets together to make a duvet cover. The set I liked only had a comforter with it or something. I agree that buying the material, sewing all that material (a lot to manage, of course it is only straight lines) is a lot more work than buying what you want and probably more expensive. But if you can't find what you want....

I get all my fabric at Joanns. It's online too. If you sign up for their mailing list, they send out 40% off coupons a lot. LOVE that store. I am currently making curtains for our bedroom. Well, right after I finish making an outfit I started for DD.

Every quilt on every bed is hand-made by me. :) Of course, quilting is waaay different than making a duvet cover or something, so I can't help you there. It really is more expensive to make the stuff yourself, but it is also more special. I buy my fabrics at a quilt shop, but I'll bet that Rogers has some discount upholstery and fabric stores around.

Breann, I will look online at Joann's. Thanks! I went to several stores yesterday and I know we use to have a discount fabric store here, but it was gone. Literally, the old building had been torn down and they built a new restaurant there. lol So I am hoping to find out where they moved too today.

Pam, I think that is really great about your quilts! I love the quilts that have been passed down to us that our Grandmother's made. I know your children will always cherish them! I bought a great bok yesterday that gives very detailed intructions on making things for the home. On fabric store told me if I still cant figure out how to do it with this book, to come in and attend there weekly class and they can help me!!

I decided to start with my ds room first and try to make him some straight valances, etc... Easy stuff! lol :) I am already ready for our spring break trip other then haircuts and snacks/drinks for the drive at the end of next week. So I am going to spend the week playing with my sewing machine. WIsh me luck! I'll need it...

My kids and dh are talking to me about 90% of the time I am trying to post on here. I'd like to think that is why I have so many typo's. I really do know how to spell. LOL aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh

I haven't done curtains or bedding. I have only sewn dresses for my kids when they were little.

I would love homemade quilts, but really don't think I could stick with the project and actually get it finished!
