What will your kids do?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: What will your kids do?
By Pamt on Thursday, March 2, 2006 - 11:34 pm:

I've been posting a lot this week because I don't have class (off for Mardi Gras all week) and I am majorly procrastinating doing statistics homework and studying for a cognitive psych test. That will all come back to bite me in the butt next week, but for now....

What do you think your kids will do as adults as their occupation based on their interests and talents now? Even though I had planned on being a doctor from 6th grade to my sophomore year in college, my mom had a gut feeling about the general direction I would end up, so I think maybe moms have an instinct on this. So, how about your kids?

My oldest is really into "the arts." He will be 12 next week and already plays guitar, clarinet, and bassoon really well. He is also an excellent artist and cartoonist and he writes stories and screenplays a lot. He's been this way since he was about 18 months old. I can see him going into music, film-making, or a creative writing field. However, he is also extremely compassionate and adventurous so I can also see him becoming a missionary.

My youngest is 9 and is a bundle of energy and everyone he meets is his "new best friend." He really excels at sports and he plays the drums, but he never sticks with anything very long. He is also very good with words, he instinctively understands French (they take a foreign language starting in kindergarten), and he is really talented in math. I can see him maybe going into international business or something where he maybe excels in a foreign language, but also has a career that is very personality driven. I could also see him being a coach.

It will be interesting to see in a few years...

By Dawnk777 on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 12:07 am:

Sarah, 16, wants to be a nurse. Emily, 13, has talked about being a vet.

They are both good at science and math. Emily is really good at art, though, and I almost think she could do something with that.

Sarah is good at photography, too. She will have a great record of her life.

By Marcia on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 12:38 am:

Nicole will work with small children for sure. She's amazing already at 12, and really enjoys it. She is requested by the K teachers as their helpers above all of the other students in the school. I'm thrilled for her!

Meghan,11, would like to be a singer and actress. LOL
She is taking Extended French in school, so does half of her day in French. She might get into something where she can use that, but who knows. She loves animals, and like most little girls, she's talked about being a vet. I really don't have a strong feeling about what she'll end up doing.

I have absolutely no idea what Kayla,9.5, will do. My dream for her is that she will be able to be an independent adult, and that she will find something that keeps her happy.

I hope that they all find something that makes them happy, above everything else!

By Kaye on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 06:59 am:

My 12 year old says she wants to be a marine biologist. This fits her, but honestly she is really really good with children. So I likely see her as a SAHM.

My 10 year old, he will be an engineer. Says he wants to be an inventor. He is not good with people and is great with following a timeline, but not a self starter. So I seem doing mechanical or civil engineering.

My little guy, age 8. He is going to be the next george lucas :) He has already planned out several ideas for movies. He is the most different child. He absolutely sees the world different from the rest of the world. He will likely create something, that we never knew we needed...LOL. Granted he will probably be broke and living at home till he is 40 (good thing he is a cutie..lol).

By Karen~moderator on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 07:41 am:

Well, 3 of my 4 went in different directions from what I thought they would. I think Jeff has surprised (and yes, disappointed) me the most. He was always incredibly mature, secure in what he wanted, dependable, reliable, had 2 scholarships, etc. Music was his life. In the last 2 years he's thrown it all away, and is now working for his dad. Which isn't a BAD thing by any means, he just could have gone SO far, KWIM?? He had big plans to get his degree in music business, was networking and making contacts, playing in bands, writing music. He is SOOO talented and bright. I just don't understand why he's done what he's done with his life.

Jason is following in his dad's footsteps career-wise, in building construction and maintenance and is coming along nicely. When he was a kid, all he wanted to be was a rock star. LOL

Jules surprised us all too. She spent 6 years in the Coast Guard, battled substance abuse issues, and is now in grad school (in *your* field, Pam! ), raising Mads, and considering a move out of state when she graduates. I thought she would end up being career Coast Guard, and for a while, was wishing she had stayed in. She started college while she was still in and changed her major so many times, I thought she was going to end up as a professional student. And I *still* have that worry. She's talking about going for a degree in Spanish next.

Jen is due to graduate later this year (hopefully - blame that on Katrina! LOL) with a degree in massage therapy. When Jen was little, she talked about becoming a vet. She has always had such love and compassion for animals. But....math was a huge problem for her in school, so she gave up on the idea of something that required that type of schooling.

Actually, none of them did what they said they wanted to do in the past, and none are really doing what *I* thought they would do.

By Luvn29 on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 08:05 am:

If Emily is able to and follows her heart and her dreams, then she will be either singing someway somehow, or working in nature with animals. This child will never be the office type of child. And by this I mean, doctor, teacher, business woman, ceo of a company, etc. If you have to be holed up inside, it won't be for her. She really loves performing, but in the long run, I really see some sort of science winning out for her in the long run. Probably a type of marine biology because of her love of the ocean and water, too.

Ashton will definitely be doing something in the engineering/architecture/designing type thing. Haven't gotten it narrowed down quite yet. But he will be designing something. Since he was able to put things together, he has been designing things to detail, working on things for hours and hours. And once he discovered being able to use pencils and paper, it only got better for him! So, I'm not sure if he'll stay at that level, or if once he gets older, he'll move up to the level that he'd rather be the one designing, or the one putting it together. That will be interesting to see. He is a very detailed child. Sometimes that gets the best of him though!

By Debbie on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 08:29 am:

My oldest ds(age8) is very driven, intense, and focused. Dh and I say he is going to be a surgeon. I can even see him with the somewhat arrogant, stand-offish bedside manner. But, his 1st love is sports. He is an excellant baseball player and was one of the only 7 yr. olds to make the allstar team last season. He can also tell you all the statistics on teams/players for baseball and football. His basball coach says he is a natural athlete and he LOVES to practice. I really see him as a professional player or a sportscaster.

My youngest ds(age 5) can talk anyone into doing anything/everything for him. He has his brother still helping him get dressed. He has the girl sitting next to him at school, helping him with his work. Everyone loves him and says he is adorable. He is also very comfortable with himself and could care less what anyone says about him. Dh says he would make a good politician. However, he loves music and is a major headbanger! We had a mother/son dance last week at school and he danced the night away, with and without a partner. He is very interested in learning to play an instrument and loves to sing and perform.

My boys are still little though, so who knows.

By Heaventree on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 09:41 am:

Ok mine are still a little young but you can definately see some traits already. I think Matthew will be some sort of mechanic or engineer. He loves to turn things upside down and take them apart to see how they work. My Father is a heavy equipment mechanic and DH's Father is a draftsmen (he drafts designs for oil refineries). So Matthew comes by it naturally and has been this way since he was mobile.

Cameron is only 6 months but if I go by his vocals he'll be an opera singer, by his size a linebacker and by his personality a comedian.:)

By Imamommyx4 on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 10:37 am:

DD age 5 will either be a ballerina (that's what she says) or a vet or operate a rescue pound. If she had her way we would have a rescue pound now. If we had enough land, we WOULD have a menagerie of animals.

I wanted to be a vet myself.

By Conni on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 10:46 am:

Oh myyy... if I could only see into the future.

I pray none of mine go to prison one day. Yeah, I know its sad- but it has crossed my mind. ROFL

Ds numero uno- says he wants to be a pro football player- but realistically he is only *OK* at the sport. I see him playing thru high school and thats it... I would never burst his bubble and tell him that. He has said he would like to be a mechanic like his Dad before. He has also said he would like to manage a business or own his own business. He loves to build things!!! I can see him as a builder. Whatever he does it will be a hands on type job. He wont sit behind a desk. He is obsessed with buying a guitar and learning to play. I think he will do this but it will be a hobby for him. He loves snowboarding and has mentioned moving to Colorado one day?!! He loves to hunt. I would love to see him do something for ADHD/Conduct Disorder kids/families. Maybe volunteer with them, teach them, start a program for them, support group for families???

Ds numero dos... 12 yo- He loves playing the drums in band right now and has already told everyone he intends to stay in band all the way thru high school. I think it will just be a hobby for him- not something he will pursue any further than that. He has asked many times if he could take acting classes. He has mentioned he would like to do commercials. However, this isnt where I want to lead my kids. lol If he chooses to pursue acting in high school/college that will be great. He is very business minded. He loves computers, video games and writing. Those could take him in a few directions career wise. I could see him writing for a computer or video game website or magazine. Goodness I dont know what he will end up doing!! He is so nice, witty and secure with himself. He is crazy enough to be the next Crocodile Hunter too. ha!! He also loves too fish.

My youngest is very much a baseball player. I really do NOT want this child to feel pressured in any way to perform in this area. I want him to do what HE wants to do. Not what Dad or Grandad did. He LOVES animals. I could see him being a Vet. He is obsessed with me taking him to play golf too? None of my kids have ever had an interest in golf- Blake asks me all the time if I will take him and teach him to play. lol

I am impressed with those that know what their kids will become. I just have no idea!!! LOL

By Mommmie on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 10:54 am:

Mine (boy, 11) will be some kind of entrepreneur, owning his own business. He just thinks that way. It doesn't matter what it is, if he can make money doing it he will think of it. He's already made money at school selling video game hints and cheats.

I don't see him working for anyone else. I don't see him going to college (which is very rare in our family, he'll only be the 2nd one who doesn't go). He doesn't "buy in" to the need for a formal education. He's an independent thinker and understands the big picture of anything almost immediately. When you play a game with him you're thinking about your next move and he is thinking about 3 moves in the future.

By Unschoolmom on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 12:14 pm:

According to their interests now?

My daughter (7) will rescue animals then sing jazz songs for them.

My son (4) will stage the Broadway play, "Thomas the Tank Engine." Naked.

By Janet on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 01:07 pm:

ROFLMBO!!!!! :)

By Insaneusmcwife on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 01:37 pm:

Ds will be a Marine just like his daddy. He is already on his path to that in the Young Marines :).
Dd will be the very first Navy Pilot that does in flight hair cuts while singing "Honky Tonk Badonkdonk!"

By Truestori on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 02:52 pm:

Well, my son (6)informed me yesterday morning that he is going to build houses for nuns when he grows up! LOL

So my next question to him was,"What is a nun?"
He had no clue! :)

By Vicki on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 03:14 pm:

When dd was small, her lifes ambition was to be a school bus driver. She said that she was going to bring all the kids back to our house after school to play! LOL Right now, I have no idea what she might be. But, I could see her working with kids in some way very easily.

By Tink on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 03:48 pm:

My oldest dd is very artistic but also really enjoys science and animals. I won't be surprised if she becomes a vet or something in the medical field. I'll worry if that's the case because she also has such a soft heart and hurts for those around her that hurt. I can't tell you how many times I've found her in front of the TV, bawling her eyes out over some animal show. I don't know if she'll be able to go into a high pressure job, though.

My ds is a math whiz and loves to collect all kinds of information. He's my trivia collector. Because of his autism (and lack of ability to handle one-on-one interactions ver well), I think he may go into computer science and research or, possibly, engineering. He's got the brains to do just about anything he wants but what he wants is to be left the heck alone!

My youngest just loves to be around people. She has a flair for opening people up and making them smile. Right now, she just wants to be a mommy when she grows up and she may be a SAHM. If she did take on an office job, I can see her doing PR for some Fortune 500 company.

By Melanie on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 04:09 pm:

Ds #1 is a math man. He has a very analytical mind. I have to laugh when he plays his football game on his PS2 because he rarely actually plays the game-he likes manager mode where he has to work with trades and salary caps. LOL. He loves sports, so I can see him doing sports analysis or management of some kind.

Ds #2 has said for a couple of years that he is going to own a lizard pet store. He wants to have a lizard in the cage and above the cage he will draw on the wall what kind of lizard it is in the cage. Whatever he does it will be something he can get very passionate about. He loves critters and drawing and if he can somehow combine those, I think he will be a very happy person. :)

Dd is tougher. I see so many traits that each of her brothers have, even though the two boys are so different from each other. It will be interesting to see what she becomes passionate about.

By Kernkate on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 04:30 pm:

DS who is 20 is in his 2nd year of college, majoring in history. He is hoping to be a high school history teacher and coach high school soccer.
I would have never thought he would be a teacher. He was always talking about marine biology growing up then as a junior in highschool he was talking the naval academy. Then his senior year decided on teaching. I never realized how much knowledge he had:)
My DS who is 11 wants to be a Pro soccer player.
DD who is only 5 said yesterday she is going to be a school bus driver.:)
Whatever direction each of them choose I am sure it will be right for them.

By Annie2 on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 07:36 pm:

Dawn, very funny! :)

My 14 year old is interested in interior design. Her room is always a mess though; we'l see.

12 dd LOVES books. She's leaning towards being a libriran (sp) in a large library or at a university. I can see her doing this because she loves being surrounded by books. I can see her as an editor for a large book publishing company. She wanted to "ride elephants in the circus" when she was younger!

My 10 year old dd is very talented at everything. She can sing, draw, strong academically, personable with everyone and athletic. She can play with the boys and be a girly-girl. I can see her being the center of attention; whether that be on a stage or in a classroom!

My 8 ds loves to play with his bratz and eat pretzels. MMMmm. He's also has a great imagination and can write incredible stories with many adjectives and descriptive words.

I want them to be happy in whatever they choose to be, I want them to have dreams/ goals and contributing members of society. I want them to follow a path that they choose and not just fall into a job.

By Conni on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 07:37 pm:

Kathy, that is interesting. Was your ds interested/good in history then growing up? I ask because my oldest ds loves history. He has always maintained 96% or above in history. He will beg me to let him stay up late to finish whatever he is watching on the History channel. He knows more about historical events then I do. He is always telling me about something or someone he has learned about on the History channel. He never gets in trouble in History class either! lol I am going to put a bug in his ear about studying History in college and see how he reacts... :) I never even thought about him pursuing History. I am glad you posted that.

This has been fun to think about. I have enjoyed reading about all of your children. :)

By Missbookworm on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 07:51 pm:

I think that my oldest will do something with computers or video games! It's what he's most interested in next to books and music (he's teaching himself to play his electronic keyboard).

I haven't figured out my nine year old yet, he likes putting things together a lot so maybe building something?

My daughter is pretty artistic/creative (she's 6) Loves drawing and colouring and painting and singing etc. I could sooo see her doing something around that

By Kate on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 08:01 pm:

Well, DD 5 collects any hairs and fingernails she finds and tapes them to her special piece of paper...forensics anyone?!?! (yuck!!)

DD 9 has been writing stories, drawing, and doing cartoons for years now. I don't know if she'll really go that route or not, but she has great strengths in every subject, but especially excels at math and language.

By Mommmie on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 08:06 pm:

Kate - my son collects fingernails too. He has a draw for them. He doesn't do hairs, though.

By Kym on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 08:14 pm:

HMMMMMMMMMM, hopefully one of the four will want to go into the Bicycle business so they can "buy" our retirement:)LOL

DD:12 Very bright (Gifted in fact) but completely undriven academically and financially, will be fabulous SAHM after she does a stint with some voluntary peace keeping mission!

DS:9 First pick would be an engineer, extremeley talented in Math, just gets it all, has a deep love of all sports, maybe a statastician (sp) or at least a Vegas numbers man! Also a great writer, so maybe a Sports Caster or Autobiography writer for athletes, he's not that talented "on the field" but really loves all games.

DS:6 Athletically talented, not only on his skills but his sportmanship as well, never gives up, understands the winning and losing thing real well, and hoops it up for his teammates while usually being the go to guy. I know he's only 6, but based on his performances so far, that's the call. He's in Kindergarten so I'm not sure how he will be academically, but socially and athletically he's pretty good. He has an enormous amount of patience for things and people so maybe a teacher as well.

DS: 21 months, well at this rate he's just an angry Irishmen with little to no patience, very possessive and a bit narcissistic, is there a profession that will fit this?LOL

By Reds9298 on Friday, March 3, 2006 - 09:19 pm:

A little young still (20mths.) but....she plays and sings music ALL DAY. Literally. She plays the piano as much as she can, she has lots of instruments that I've purchased for her recently through Kindermusik, and more CD's than I do. She doesn't want anyone singing with her, she'll tell you that right off the bat. SHE wants to do it :)

I'm a musical person who sings (my first love)and plays both piano and clarinet, so maybe she will be musical, too??

By Bellajoe on Saturday, March 4, 2006 - 01:23 pm:

It seems we have a lot of Vets and singers in the group!

DD (6) has wanted to be a rock star/veterinarian. The other day she said she wanted to be a Doctor too. She said she would work on people in the morning and animals in the afternoon. LOL

What do I think she will do? I have a feeling that she will end up being a teacher or someone else who helps people. We do not have any pets, nor will we. It seems DH is allergic to anything with fur, and there is no way we are getting any type of reptiles or amphibians. So i don't think she has much of an idea of what a Vet does. At one point i wanted to be a vet too. Then i learned about Vets putting animals to sleep. Couldn't handle that. it's too sad. :(

DS (5) also wanted to be a rock star. Recently he said he wanted to build houses like his daddy. So i think he will get an engineering degree and also build houses like his dad does.

By Luvn29 on Saturday, March 4, 2006 - 01:29 pm:

Maybe we'll have our own group of Momsview American (and Canadian!) Idols one of these days! LOL!

By Crystal915 on Saturday, March 4, 2006 - 01:45 pm:

Well, at 3, my kids have high ambitions. My DS wants to be a football player, and my DD wants to be a princess. When my dad asked her what she was going to be, and she told him a princess, he told her it's good to aim high, LOL!! Really though, she is my artistic one, loves to sing, dance, and create things. I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up doing something artistic.

By Kernkate on Saturday, March 4, 2006 - 03:39 pm:

Conni, he never really seem to take a hugh interest in History in school, he did ok in class but nothing I would have ever thought he would pursue. He just seems now all the things he has learned over the years was all kept in his brain until he graduated now he is like a walking history book:) Knows 100% more then me.
DS Tom is always watching the History channel and CNN for current events.
Schools can always use good history teachers:)
Tell you DS if its something he is interested in go for it.
