Getting paint of the walls

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2006: Getting paint of the walls

In our upstairs bathroom, we have peeling paint, how do you get the paint off the wall? We bought htose scrapper things. They work somewhat, but it takes forever in a day. This house is like 42 yrs old, and Im sure the paint is that old as well LOL..We have been here for 7 yrs. There was wallpaper in there. We pulled that down, but the paint is all chipping. I would like it all down so we can put some fresh paint up. Any suggestions how to get rid of chipping/peeling paint?

Uhhhhhhhhh using a sander??? I have no idea!

Could it have lead? If it is really old there will be other precautions. Otherwise--I would start by sanding it and then follow up with a primer like kilz.

Yjja123 brings up a good point. Lead paint is a possibility. More info:

I probably wouldn't bother, due to the possiblity of lead. What I would do is take drywall mud and mud over it, then texture it how you want it and paint. The drywall mud should secure down the old paint.
