Car inspections and registrations.... I'm curious?!?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2006: Car inspections and registrations.... I'm curious?!?
By Christylee on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 04:24 pm:

Today I had to go and get my car inspected and then do my registration for my car; I was talking with a friend who lives in Ohio and she said they don't do inspections, I was surprised. Thought I'd throw this out here and see where else does them or doesn't do them.

My particular county does both inspection AND emission and we do them every year. Kaye I believe you're probably not in Harris county what do you guys do?

So where you live you do state inspections, how about registrations (I think this could be standard), and also how long are your drivers licenses valid for? (our's can be up to 8 years I believe)

By Vicki on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 04:28 pm:

What type of inspection are you asking about? Just a general safety inspection or the one that tests something for air pollution I think?? Forget what it is called.

I am in Ohio and I thought it depended on the year of your car as to if you had to have the inspection or not?? Could be wrong on that though. LOL I SHOULD know that shouldn't I? LOL We have to register every year and drivers licenses are good for 4 years.

Don't do inspections in IN either, although I think at one time they did. When we lived in PA we also had inspections there and thought it was so weird!

I think our licenses are valid for 7-8 years, without checking to confirm that. I renewed mine at 25 and it's due again next year (at 32).

By Christylee on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 04:52 pm:

We do one that checks your safety features, seat belts, wipers, turning signals, etc... then we also have one that some areas are required to do the emissions which is the pollution one.

No inspections in California. Cars don't have to have the emission test until they are like 4 or 5 years old. After that it has to be done every couple of years. Registration happens every year and I think licenses are good for 4 years, and then it can be renewed by mail.

Florida--no inspections required. I wish they were required! There are a ton of junkers on the road. You wonder how they even make it down the road.

By Conni on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 05:14 pm:

No inspections in Arkansas.

Registration (car tag renewal) is done every yr. We can do it online and they mail us the sticker for the tag. So thats nice.

I think Missouri has inspections. They did - because my sister has mentioned it to me a time or two, when she had just had her inspection done.

By Debbie on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 05:17 pm:

No inspections in Illinois either. When we lived in Texas, we did have to do inspections.

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 05:24 pm:

Both in Bell County, TX... but I don't think they do emissions test. We don't have inspections here in KS. We do have to renew our registration every year, but can do it online, which is good because I got in an argument with an old lady at the office when we bought our car. (She didn't think N's ID was proof enough that he was active duty Army... DUHHHHH!!!!!)

PA - vehicle registration annual. License plates every 4 or 5 years, driver's license every 4 years, I think.

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 05:50 pm:

PA does annual vehicle inspections - major parts, including things like struts, brakes, battery, turn signals, wipers, lights, seat belts, body rust, doors & windows, etc. and emissions. If you don't pass and don't correct the problems and then pass, your registration can be lifted. Older cars that are driven under a certain annual mileage get a pass on emissions inspection. I have a new car, bought in Nov. 2004, and had my first post-purchase inspection last October. I was told that if I don't drive more than a certain number of miles before the next inspection (about 3 times what I would drive), I don't have to have an emissions inspection next year.

I remember when I visited my parents in Chicago, that Illinois didn't have an inspection program. I was shocked to see cars with huge rust holes in the body and doors held shut with coathangers.

Personally, I'm in favor of state auto inspection programs. I know NJ has emissions testing because there was a lot of hooraw about some pay-to-play being involved in awarding the contract several years ago, and I believe they also have vehicle inspections similar to Pennsylvania.

I think there is some federal mandate for emissions testing, with highway funding at risk if a state doesn't have such a program.

I thought I responded already to this. We have to pass an inspection/emission test and register our cars every year. I think you should have to get cars inspected every year. I live in MA.

By Conni on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 06:54 pm:

hmm, we use to have inspections but they changed it so that we dont have to mess with it. I think its nice.

I do think cars before a certain yr have to be inspected? And I am sure if you get pulled over here and something isnt working you can be ticketed for it.

We pretty much have BMW's, LandRovers, Escalades, and Mercedes taking over our roads. Not many clunkers arund here.

By Kaye on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 07:17 pm:

Yep I am in harris county, I have to do the whole shebang. However in ohio where we lived we had the yearly registration, but we also had to do emissions testing, but every other year. Based on your bday, you had odd years or even years.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - 10:26 pm:

No safety inspections, but we do have to have the emissions tested.

License plate good for a number of years. Driver's license good for 8 years.

Pay for vehicle registration every year and get a sticker for the license plate.

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, February 23, 2006 - 07:45 am:

Safety inspections annually, which can be quite a joke in Louisiana......though they have tightened up on the *loose* inspection stations so most of them are actually inspecting the vehicles now.

License plate/registration every 2 years.

Driver's license is good for 4 years, I believe, and in some cases, you can renew online.
