Netfilx Throttle

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2006: Netfilx Throttle
By Karen~moderator on Friday, February 17, 2006 - 07:39 am:

I'm sure by now, most of us have read/heard about this. I *knew* something was going on with Netflix and my account and I kept saying so to DH. Then when this got all the press it did last week, I was sure we had been throttled too. We used to have same day turn-around - they'd receive movies back from me and send more out the same day, I'd received them in one or two days. Now, they receive them from me in one or two days, yet it takes about 9 o 10 days for movies to come back to me. AND, I check my queue almost daily, and it's amazing how many movies *suddenly* have *long wait* from one day to the next, especially the new releases that have been in my *saved* queue for months, and move up into my regular queue. Exactly as the media reported....

I was just talking to dh about this. I am getting pretty po'd about it. Thinking of switching to blockbuster. I sent two movies back on Monday and they didn't ship anything until yesterday so I'll probably get it tomorrow.

I've never used them or blockbuster. I personally would rather go to the store and pick them up/drop them off. I don't trust the mail enough to get them back and forth. This distrust comes from BMG. We, against my better Christmas and I told them and they assured me they would not send me unwanted cd's. Well I sent one back, and the day before yesterday we got another one and yesterday a letter demaning $40 for the one I send back and the one sent yesterday along with another cd. I'm so fustrated. I've fulfilled my commitment already so now its just a matter of getting them on the phone to cancel my account.

Ok, Karen. I am so out of the loop. What is going on? What does being "throttled" mean?
Thanks,
Ame

Dh has been talking for the last month about switching to Blockbuster. This may just push him to do it.

Ame, they advertise *unlimited rentals*, but basically, they have a pre-determined number that is considered *unlimited* for each monthly plan. If you have quick turn arounds and order more than that number - a lot of rentals - in a month, they throttle you - bump you to the end of the list for new releases and give those to new subscribers or those who don't rent a lot of movies, and they take longer to send you movies if you are renting more than they think you should be. It's quite the loophole - they advertise unlimited, but they are actually limiting you, so you're really not coming out any cheaper than by renting at your local video store. For the first 18 months, we probably rented 20 a month for our 5-at-a-time plan, which was a bargain. But now with the throttle, they've got us down to maybe 10 a month.

For me, renting through the mail is SO convenient. But I am totally fed up. I almost switched to Blockbuster online a while back, but Netflix actually does have many more titles, particularly TV/Cable series, that Blockbuster doesn't have.

I rent through blockbuster and like it alot better than netflix. We had netflix and used it for years then we started getting movies later and later so we switched the offers at blockbusters are alot better I rent 2 unlimited and get 4 instore rentals a month for 15.00. I can return a movie say on MOnday and have another by Thursday. There may be a little wait on new movies but not as long as some of the time we waited at Netflix

By Kaye on Friday, February 17, 2006 - 12:04 pm:

i am thinking of joining block buster, because I like the in store rental option. Sometimes there is just a movie that I want to see, NOW!

Are the free rentals any rentals or only "favorites?"

By Shann on Friday, February 17, 2006 - 12:20 pm:

Its any rentals for the instore.

Blockbuster is only 3/4 of a mile away from my house. We just drive there and get our movies. Although, someone had rented Fantasia 2000 from Blockbuster online, back in August and had never returned it. We were there every week for 2 months and it was never in. They didn't seem to be interested in replacing it, either. I finally found it on Ebay and it's in the process of being shipped to us (from Malaysia!) So, in-store isn't always better, either.
