Loud music from your neighbors GRRRRRRRRRR

OK, I live in a subdivision. I live on the side of the street that backs up to another street behind our subdivision that is.... *not the type of people you'd choose for neighbors*. Much of it has become section 8 housing - which, PLEASE don't get me wrong, I am not pointing the finger at section 8 housing in general, but at the particular residents who live behind ME in particular. They are *quite* a colorful lot back there, and I don't mean that in reference to their skin color.

Many of my neighbors have music on in their yards when they are gardening, washing cars, etc. And I have no problem with that - usually - because it's for a short period of time and the music is not obnoxious and the volume is fairly tolerable.

BUT behind me, are several residences where the people have all-day gatherings, into the night, and they play rap and stuff that sounds more like injured animals screaming than music, at the highest volume possible. It makes me wonder how they can afford the stereo equipment to play this stuff that loud in the first place. And often, all you can hear is the bass booming, for hours at a time. It literally gives me a headache!

I should add that we have a noise ordinance here, but it specifically goes into effect at 10 PM. After that time, you can call the police and make a complaint and they will shut them down. However, in the daylight hours, nothing really gets done about it.

Any of you ever dealt with this before? And what do you do?????

Call the police over and over and over. Our nieghbors actually ended up moving :) They informed us on the way out that they were moving to another neighborhood that lets them party.
Here we can call during the day too. If I can hear the music in my house and the walls are vibrating you are disturbing the peace. After so many reports here you get fined.
Good luck!

I TOTALLY know what you mean! I was trying to take a nap the other day and some kid decides that it was OK to practice his drums with the window open.
Grrrr...by the time, I got my butt out of bed and found the # to the police, I was too mad to go back to sleep and 10 minutes later it stopped.
Grrrr....I agree with Yvonne though. It's disturbing the peace, for sure.

Has your parish got a noise level ordinance. In a lot of places, there are decibel limits that cannot be exceeded, night or day.

When you call the police, have your window open so they can hear what you are hearing. And, if its Section 8, complain to the public housing authority and, if you can find out who it is, the landlord. Section 8 has some behavioral rules built in, I believe.

Oh boy Karen! Do Knoooow where you are coming from! I lived in Brooklyn all my life. First it was the loud disco played by my DJ next door neighbor all day.

Then, it was the rap played by neighbors around the corner at all day-night parties.

I called the police many times. They said, shut your window. I told the officer my windows were shut, my AC was on, and if he could hear it, imagin how loud it really was!

Finally I said, "How long will it take you to get a car over when I get assaulted for going over there myself and asking them to turn it down?"

That's when he said he'd send someone. The music was turned down for a little while, but then went back up again.

That's one of the reasons I moved to a rural community to a house in the middle of 2 and a half acres.

Hope you can get some peace.

Maybe go out for the day?

Ame

I actually got into a HUGE argument with my neighbors over this, because I had finally had enough and the police wouldn't do anything. The mom was trying to come after me, so the police were called, and promised that if we ever had a problem again, they would immediately come out, since there was a history now. **sigh** The sad truth is most departments are so busy that they don't do much until it gets out of hand. Do you have a Howmowner's Association? Can you get a petition from your neighbors to take to the police and file a report? Otherwise you can go my route, and get into a shouting match, but I don't suggest it. LOL

I live in the city, but my neighbors are very quiet, except for lawn mowwers, snow blowers, shoveling, and leaf blowers. It's very nice!

Our Homeowners Association has fallen apart. It seems the police don't want to be bother with these type *non-emergency* calls since hurricane Katrina. My parish has grown about 38% since Katrina, so they are overworked handling just the emergency stuff.

We were gone for a while this afternoon to get passport photos done. UGH! It's pretty quiet back there now. If it starts back up later tonight, I'll call the police anyway, but I don't expect too much.

errr, If you cant beat'em, join'em? lol We had issues for a whlie with a guy working on his Harley every night... It kinda old, you cant imadine how loud that thing was. Scared the crud out of ya when he would start it up. Apparently he got tired of working on it and sold it. lol yea! Many wkends he was running it very late into the night.

You can always go my route, and give them a taste of their own medicine. The police finally showed up that time to make sure we didn't brawl (I never intended to anyway). Oh, you can blare whatever music you love all the time, and drive them nuts until they say something. Also, our noise ordinance is 10pm as well, but the officer said if you can hear it more than 25 feet away it's a violation no matter what the time. Be persistant in calling the cops, and ask your neighbors to do the same. Do they rent or own?
