Our dog Gypsy died this evening :(

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2006: Our dog Gypsy died this evening :(
By Annie2 on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 07:38 pm:

She was almost 13. She was very ill in Oct. and we actually didn't think she was going to make it. Then she snapped back for a couple of months.
However this past week she had been going down hill. This morning she was immobile and panting very hard. She laid in the same general spot all day. DD tried to take her outside this evening to pee but she collapsed in the garage. She died from some sort of organ failure or a stroke. I was with her when she died and kids surrounded her afterwards. :(
Even though we all knew she would go soon it is very quiet here in the house. We got her from the pound when oldest dd was 2 so all the kids grew up with her. She will be missed.

Annie, sweetie...ugh. My heart goes out to you guys. Are you guys going to do some kind of memorial so the kids have closure?

Annie, I'm so sorry for your loss.

By Annie2 on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 08:19 pm:

We kept her collar and tags but had to bring her to our vet for disposal. I have two collars/tags from the dogs I grew up with in my closet so we will put hers with theirs.
We live in a low lying area, near woods, so burial in our yard would not be an option. We didn't want to take the chance of our other dog digging around her. We also were thinking about cremating her and scattering/keeping her ashes but I wasn't able to get in touch with an animal service which did this. It was getting close to our vet's closing time (20 minutes) and it being a Friday night, we didnt want to have her interim over the weekend.
Thanks for all of your kind thoughts. :)

I'm so sorry. It's hard to lose a pet and I was also amazed at how quiet the house was, after Honey died, too. (((HUGS}}}

Annie, when you're ready you can do a little memorial for your dog. Our vet did this for his dog. They got a small shadow box, put a picture of the dog inside the box and wrapped the collar with the tags around the picture and I think they put a little note about their dog in the box as well. Oh Annie I am so sorry for the loss of your dog. I know how you feel, I lost my buddy Patch a 15 year old Pit bull almost two years ago. My heart goes out to you and your family.

(((hugs))) Our pets really do become a part of the family. It's so hard to let them go. :( Sounds like you gave her a wonderful life.

Annie, I am sorry for your family. I know it will be hard when our dog dies. Sadie Mae and Kayla are the same age! She's almost 8 and starting to go blind. She's like one of my kids. I hope your kids are ok.

Annie, I'm SO very sorry! No matter what other people say, pets are family members, and it's very painful to lose them. I think Cori has a great idea about a Memorial.

Thanks everyone. 14 year old dd is still very upset. She has plans for tomorrow with girlfriends so I'm sure she'll feel better tomorrow.
