Why are strangers so quick to judge?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2006: Why are strangers so quick to judge?
By Jackie on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 - 11:39 am:

Since we are going on a cruise in August, I frequent the Cruisecritic message board. I simply asked if baby monitors work on a ship. I asked because we will be getting 2 inside staterooms side by side, they are not connecting. We plan on having one adult in each room with the kids. I would never leave my kids alone in a room. Ok, maybe my son(who will be 12), but not my younger two.
Anyways, this lady responds saying basically dont bother bringing more then we need, and that I shouldnt leave my kids alone in a room anyways??
Hmmm... I dont think I was asking advice about my parenting, I was simply asking a question if baby monitors would work on a ship.I figured instead of rining the phones back and forth, we can use the monitors to see whats going on next door.

If it were me, I'd call back and ask the question again and if you get the same response, say I wasn't asking for parenting advice or packing advice, I was asking if baby monitors work room-to-room on the ship. Please answer my question or, if you can't answer it, connect me to someone who can.

Ginny, that was a response on a messageboard, just like this one.

Jackie, don't let it upset you, if you didn't explain that one adult will be in each of the staterooms, she probably incorrectly assumed your kids would be alone in a stateroom - which is not allowed on a cruise ship, you have to have one legal adult in each stateroom with any minors, I believe.

How many people can be in one room? I've never thought of that. I just always assumed that the whole family can stay in one room. If you can't stay in one room, are adjoining rooms available. I know you said that your particular set up will not be adjoining. But, is that an option?
We've been wanting to plan a cruise, but I don't know that I would like to be split up like that.

Breann, you can get suites that can fit a family of 5. It was cheaper for us to get 2 inside staterooms then to get a suite. There were no adjoining rooms in our price range. We do have rooms side by side though.
Some ships let you have 5 people in an inside stateroom, but not on the ship we are going on. I found out on the older Carnival ships they will allow 5 to an inside room. We are going on one of the new Carnival ships and they have dift rules.
Anybody who knows me knows I would never leave my children alone in a room and go somewhere else on the ship, not even my soon to be 12 yr old. Would I let him go to the next room and get a book or a toy her forgot, or use the bathroom in the next stateroom , of course.
These people on the Cruisecritic message board were totally out of hand with a simple question.
If I wasnt computer challenged I would post a link to my exact post.

I'm sorry she didn't answer your question, but truly she just sounds like she was looking out for your children. There are PLENTY of careless parents out there who WOULD try and leave their kids unattended except for a baby monitor. She doesn't know if you are one of those or not, so she was probably just trying to protect your kids.

I know exactly how you feel Jackie. You ask a question hoping to get an answer and in the end you never do get an answer to your question but yet get a lot of "No offense but I wouldn't...bla bla bla" and none of it has anything to do with what you posted. Have you noticed just about any time someone says "No offense" it pretty much is a given that what they have to say is offensive and really should have just been kept to themselves anyway???

Breann--the smaller suites only allow 4 people. We have a junior suite on the Royal Carribean and the most you are allowed is 4 people. An owners suit is $1000's more. We also have an ajoining room with my parents and usually get our rooms ajoining. It is much easier having a door inside the room to go back and forth.
Jackie--Cruise Critic always seems to get nasty quickly. There seem to be a lot of cruisers who would prefer having no children allowed on their cruises. Don't let them get to you. I *think* a baby monitor would not work well. There is so much interferance with people using cell phones and walkie talkies. It wouldn't hurt to take it just in case though.

Yvonne, up until this point I never had any problems there. I thought I was asking a simple question. Some nice people posted saying they do work, as long as you have them on the same wall between cabins. They dont take up much room, so it is not a big deal to pack it. I mean we are already bringing the stroller and carseat with us LOL...What the heck is a baby monitor going to do LOL

I have some walkie talkies you can borrow. When are you going?

By Jackie on Thursday, February 9, 2006 - 07:19 am:

Thanks Kristie, we have some 2 way radios as well. We are going in August.

cool, I'm sure I will see you before then, lol!
