On-Line Grocery Shopping

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2006: On-Line Grocery Shopping

Does anyone here do their grocery shopping on-line? Is this service available in your area?

I used to shop this way all the time. I set-up a standard list on-line and everytime I wanted to shop I would call up my list and add or remove things I did or didn't want. It was so easy I usually did my grocery shopping before I left the office.

The delivery fee was only $8 I think now it's $9. I stopped using the service because they sold the business to someone else and you used to be able to pay with your debit at the door. Now you can only pay by credit card on-line (they have a secure site). I just didn't want to pay for my goceries with a credit card. Anyway I have caved in and started using the service again because it is just so convenient. You can also pick your delivery times as well within a 3 hour window and modify your order up to 12 or 24 hours before delivery.

I just think it's such a good service, I have many times fogotton something and run to the computer to change my order after the fact or read a recipe somewhere and added to my order before delivery.

Anyway just curious if anyone else shops this way or would you shop this way if you could?

Here is a link to the demo shopping, not sure if it will work or not but give it a try just for fun:

I've thought about it, but I'm so picky about my veggies and other produce, and meat and such. I don't think I'd be happy with stuff someone else picked out. Also, I look for sales on nonperishables, so I only get them when they are well priced.

I'm glad it works for you. I have a friend that doe it and she likes it, but I don't think I would.

Ditto Ame, I am VERY picky about my meat, dairy and produce, I wouldn't trust someone to pick it out for me.

Ditto Ame and Karen. :) Also, the service in our area offers a fairly limited selection. Due to food allergies and sensitive skin we have to be picky. Last I checked, they didn't offer any HE detergents for my frontload washing machine. No thanks.

I just quickly checked the online grocery shopping service in our area. A gallon of 1% milk is $4.39! Yikes!

Trina, that's Canadian! You can't compare prices. :)

The prices are a bit more. Actually the food quality is excellent. It's from a store here called Longos, you can buy a lot of organic fruits and vegetables, whole wheat pasta that is not always readily available in the regular stores. Also a lot of natural products and things made from recylced fibers. I haven't had any problems with the meat although I only buy ground beef and chicken on-line.

I still shop for some stuff in the regular grocery, for example I don't buy bananas as they come bright yellow and I prefer to buy a little under ripe so that they last a few days longer.

Any quality issues I have had in the past I call customer service and they always give me a full credit on my next order for the items in question but really I've only had a few problems like broken eggs or a broken bottle. I think once I had a produce issue, but it was no big deal.

No Cori, that's the cost at PeaPod.com in MY area. LOL!

Sorry Trina I read too fast, my mistake, that is expensive!

I can't see paying $9 for delivery, when I have a grocery store only about 3 blocks away. So, no, I'm not going to do online shopping. The biggest bugaboo to going to the store is trying to cross the big road (4 lanes of traffic, at 8am or 5pm!)

Just like I can't see paying for movie tickets online, when the movie theater is only about a mile away, since you have to pay a surcharge if you order online.

My sister does it and she loves it. The local supermarket by her has an online site where she can place her order. She can input how she likes her produce and such. She drives up to the store, she hands the money over (credit, check or cash), gives any coupons, and they load up the car for her. She loves it. I just wished they did it by me.

I got my order today, the tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes, broccoli were excellent.

I ordered some whole wheat pasta, they didn't have it in stock so I wasn't charged.

The sent me some organic peanut butter and marmalade that I didn't order but didn't charge me for it.

They charged me for cauliflower but it wasn't in the box.

I ordered some frozen haddock and it was defrosted by the time it arrived.

I called and asked for a credit on the fish and the cauliflower and it was not a problem.

I love the service, the drivers are not allowed to take tips and are always friendly and helpful, customer service people are excellent and the quality of the products are great. Overall a really good experience for me as there is no way I'm taking a 4 month old and a 2 year old grocery shopping. DH was going but it makes for all long day for him having to go after work.

I have used Safeway.com to do on-line shopping and LOVE it. Being always on the run, I find it's worth every bit of the delivery price.
