Airfare prices

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2006: Airfare prices

Really just a vent..But when are airline prices going to go down, or are they ever? Im looking for airfare for Aug when we go on our cruise. The lowest I have found is 238$, which really is no bargain. Last June we flew to Ft Lauderdale (from Norfolk/Va Beach area)for 105$ roundtrip, that was including tax etc..
I know I have 7 months, but it doesnt seem like airfare is dropping at all. Ive checked out all the major travel sites, and the individual airline sites..Ive been all over it.
Anybody know any inside info about prices dropping anytime soon LOL

One thing you are seeing that is being passed on to consumers is the increased fuel costs. Just keep looking for specials. Does Southwest fly into and out of your area?

By Jackie on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 - 11:20 am:

Yes they do, but on their site I cant get into looking for Aug, it stops at June.

I assume you've tried Travelocity and Expedia (I personally prefer Expedia). And yes, it is fuel costs, to a great extent.

Airtran seems to have the best deals. It just depends on where you're flying and where you want to go. They only fly to/from certain places.

Jackie, we are having the same problem, trying to book flights into and out of Ft. Lauderdale for next Nov/Dec 2006.

After the horrible experiences we had with Delta and Continental when flying to/from FIL's funeral last month, we are trying to stick with Southwest. However, they have about 30% of their normal flights in and out of New Orleans right now.

Even though it's like a cattle call when waiting to board on Southwest due to no assigned seating, we have found in the last year, that we prefer them to the other airlines, certainly over Delta. They were THE worst to deal with - delayed flights due to weather, but we clearly had an emergency situation and they were rude and totally unwilling to make ANY effort whatsoever to help us. And the seats were incredibly uncomfortable. Just a bad experience overall. But we've had great experiences on Southwest.

Karen, our cruise actually leaves out of Miami. But, I found the flights are cheaper to Ft Lauderdale then to Miami. Plus my parents live in the Ft Lauderdale area,(about 20 minutes away)so we were going to stay over night before the cruise, and over night before we head home .
Im not giving up. I have fare alerts on Orbitz, so I get updated on fares, that is how I got that 105$ price last yr. Yes it was on Delta. So far we havent had any problems with any of the airlines.
Im really looking forward to our cruise now, since its only 7 months away. We planned it 16months out, and it seemed to far and unreal to really look into details about it. But, Im on the cruise critic message boards all the time now.
My biggest decision is now what to do with the excursions. Since Faith will only be 2 yrs old, we are limited on what to do. We will not be taking any 5 hr tours with her.
Im looking forward to Cozumel, and hanging out on Paradise Beach. I LOVE the beach, and it seems child friendly.
The other ports are going to be a little more tricky to figure out what to do with a 2 yr old. My other kids will be 12 and 7 at the time of the cruise.

AH! Southwest flies into Ft. Lauderdale. What ports are you going to? What ship are you going on? Tell me more!!!!!

Karen, We are going on the Carnival Valor, the Western Carribean. Its a 7 nite cruise. We are going to 4 ports, Grand Cayman Island, Belize, Cozumel, and Roatan. We are leaving Aug 20. See on Carnival cruise line, they will take kids as young as 2 yrs old, and not potty trained in their camp carnival. Faith will turn 2 Aug 13th, so thats why we planned it for Aug 20th.It will be a week of celebration Faith turns 2 on Aug 13th, my son turns 12 on Aug 19th, our 13th anniversary is Aug 21, and my birthday is Aug 24, what a week LOL :)

OH I'm so jealous! You are going 2 places I've never been and am DYING to go - Roatan and Belize! Roatan is beautiful - well, at least the parts I saw pics of are. One of my surveyors spent nearly 3 months there on a job several years ago. The water is gorgeous!!!!!

My doctor's nurse is from Belize and she told me if I ever went there, she'd tell me the *local* places to go.

Grand Cayman - pretty much is water sports stuff, although there are other things to do there. Your older kids would love doing the stingray swim thing. You can book online with Captain Marvin, or through the ship. We just did that in December.

Of course, anywhere with beach is FUN! You can actually walk to the right of the cruiseship pier in Grand Cayman, and snorkel right there, if you or your DH wanted to do that with the older 2 kids. You don't have to pay a fortune to go out with a group. We did that the first time we were there, and honestly, the snorkeling was better there than it was where we were taken to snorkel in December. You can rent snorkel/masks/fins on the Carnival ships. We own our own equipment.

When I was in Cozumel in 1999, I was sick as a dog and had a UTI, so we were off the ship only long enough to walk around a bit and eat something. There's supposed to be great snorkeling/beachs there too.

They have stingray excursions, etc. in Roatan as well.

If you like beaches, you will like this cruise!!!
