Bathroom smells(a gross kind of topic)

Do you use any type of sprays in your bathroom for odor? Ive always kept cans of Lysol in each bathroom. I think it is because my mother always did. Anyways, I know that is what the bathroom is for and there will be odor in there. BUT, I have gotten my kids in the habit of using the spray. My husband on the other hand, uses it only half the time. He has been sick this past week with some sort of stomach virus, and to say the least the smell around here isnt pretty LOL.. Ive walked down the stairs and almost gagged at the smell. Yes, I know he is sick, but geez use the spray, thats what its there for. Sometimes before he even get out of the bathroom I yell "Dont forget the spray". Im just one of those people who gags at certain smells, expecially those.
Do you normally have sprays in your bathroom, what do you do for odor? Or, does it not bother you?

By Happynerdmom on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 09:21 am:

No, I don't keep sprays in the bathroom, but I've taught the kids (and dh does it, too) to turn on the fan and close the door during, and when they are finished. That usually takes care of it pretty quickly.

I also have Lysol spray in my bathroom especially when everyone is sick. Everyone here is pretty good with spraying when its needed.

Have him open the window, if there is one in the bathroom. I have also heard of people lighting a candle in the room, to get the odor to go away. I'm not sure if you can do that with Faith around though,
We turn the fan on and close the door. Lysol does not really work, imo. It just adds to the stinky smell.

Pure Citrus!!! Wonderful, and doesn't just make it smell like poopy citrus. I started using this in my daughter's room for dirty diaper smell, and have since put it in all of my bathrooms. It's wonderful. You can get it at Walmart.

I don't think Lysol works either and it bugs my nose. Just makes it smell like Lysol coated poop IMO :) I really like Pure Citrus.

Where do u buy it? is it a spray, what is it? I want to go buy some now LOL

By Annie2 on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 02:45 pm:

The Lysol spray is more for the germs on surfaces. Not the air. Try something for the air like Oust or a Glade spray.

We had a spray down in the basement bathroom, but it has wandered off somewhere else. The downstairs bathroom is 6-7 feet away from my computer, so poop smells are rather gross. May have to track it down.

Would Febreze work?

Oh, my house was built in 1956 and doesn't have bathroom fans. :(

We use spray and when its bad I use a scented candle from the spray aisle or dhoop sticks (a kind of incense).

By Mommmie on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 03:21 pm:

We use candles a lot. JWe just keep them burning in there during high use times or when company is over. Sprays don't seem to work that well. You could always light a match since that sulfur smell kills odors.

By Groovepickle on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 03:22 pm:

I lived in China for a year and believe me if your husband crapped right on the floor it wouldn't smell as bad as their bathrooms so needless to say smells from the bathroom don't bother me. LOL
:) Groove
In my own bathroom I'm a big fan of Clorox clean up. I have a huge industrial strength jug. From what I've noticed bathrooms with a lot of wood in them seem to hang onto smells.

By Bea on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 06:37 pm:

I think the spray makes it worse. LOL It smells like flowers rotting. My pet peeve about bathroom smells is that my husband believes in closing the door when he leaves the room stinking. He claims it encloses the smell. I want the door left open to disburse the smell. It's disgusting to walk in to the stink later.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 07:26 pm:

I agree with you, Bea. LOL

Incense works WONDERS in bathrooms. TOTALLY gets rid of the poopy smell.

I like the Pure Citrus spray, too! We've used it for years. My mom got me hooked on it. She's lactose-intolerant and this takes care of most odors. I like to keep a candle burning if I know I'll be in there for a while, like when I'm doing my hair and makeup. I'm not comfortable just leaving one burning if I'm going to be at the other end of the house.

Bea, I'm with you! Open the door and get rid of the smell, don't capture it for the next person! My dh believes as your's does.

You can get Pure Citrus at Walmart or Meijer. It's a non-aerosol spray in a can. LOVE IT!!

By Momofmax on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 08:55 pm:

I have the same problem but what adds to it is all of the five to seven year old boys that use my bathroom on the weekends. They have not perfected their aim yet! Kids in the neighborhood are welcomed to play in my house but by Sun. afternoon the guest bathroom smells like WalMart's bathroom! I use Clorox wipes and the swiffer floor "mop" wipes a few times on the weekends until I can really get in there and clean on Mondays. I also have an Oust for poopy smells.

By Cat on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 09:57 pm:

I have a can of Oust in our bathroom. Now if I can just get my kids to use it! lol Randy is also one of those that will make a stink (and BOY can that kid make a big stink! lol) and then close the door. So later you walk into a gas chamber! We don't have a window in our bathroom and running the fan doesn't do much good. Good luck finding something that works for you. Sounds like you're not alone. :)

LOL about the Citrus. I work in a hospital and one time we were doing a swallow study on an incontinent patient. One of the guys in radiology sprayed some hospital grade citrus deodorizer and my suprvisor asked if that stuff really worked. He said, "Well if you like it to smell like you pooped in an orange grove it does." :)

At my current hospital we occasionally deal with dirty diapers. We have hospital grade stuff called Bahama Breeze but it makes most of us sick. Most of us bring our own favorite sprays from Bath and Body Works for our therapy rooms now.

For my boys' bathroom---I avoid it at all costs. The pee smell is always more overwhelming than the poop smell. I've cleaned their bathroom with bleach and a toothbrush to no avail. And, btw, my DH is a door shutter too. Whew!

By Breann on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 - 10:25 pm:

I like the lysol baby powder scent. Everyone here is good about turning the fan on and spraying. Not an issue for us, thank goodness :)

My inlaws use the citrus stuff mentioned above. It is way too citrusy for me. Everytime it gets sprayed, I can taste it.
