School on a legal holiday!!!!!!!!!!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2006: School on a legal holiday!!!!!!!!!!
By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 08:33 pm:

I was talking to my dad tonight and he mentioned that all the bowl games are on Monday. Guess were my kids will be on Monday? In school!

I'd like to know who's the brain surgeon that didn't realize that New Year's Day was on a Sunday and that we would need Monday off, too!

I wrote a letter to the superintendent! LOL! Good grief!

Does anyone else have kids who are supposed to be back on Monday. I would just keep my kids out of school, but if we have school, I have to work during the lunch hour!

--------------------------------------

I would like to know who didn't look at a calendar and figure out that New Year's Day was on a SUNDAY this year!

All the bowl games are on Monday and most people have off! Yet, Sheboygan's kids have to go to school? How unfair is that? I bet many children are not going to be in school on Monday.

We are missing out on an extra time with Grandma and Grandpa and a hotel room in Door County Sunday night, since my kids, 16 and 13, both have to come back to go to school on Monday. You might ask why I don't just keep them out of school on Monday? Well, I'm a lunch supervisor at Pigeon River, so if there is school, I have to work.

While I don't get into football and wouldn't watch the bowl games anyway, it's just the principal of the thing! It's really unfair for those of us, who might have had plans for that day!

Who would think that someone would have to tape the Tournament of Roses parade, so your kids could watch it, on a LEGAL HOLIDAY?

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 08:34 pm:

OH yeah.

By Pamt on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 08:51 pm:

January 2md isn't a legal holiday. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are, but not the day after. My kids will be back in school as well. So will most of the other schools I know of around here---private and public. My sister is a teacher in AL and she'll be back in school too.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 09:05 pm:

But, they're going to miss all the usual New Year's Day stuff! LOL! We could care less about football, but the Wisconsin Badgers are playing on Monday and the Tournament of Roses parade is on Monday. It just doesn't seem fair.

My husband's newspaper is recognizing Monday as the legal holiday. Just like December 26th this week, January 2nd is when he is getting his double-time holiday pay.

By Annie2 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 09:32 pm:

My kids go back on the third. Monday should be the legal holiday since the original day falls on a weekend. IMO

By Karefl on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 10:05 pm:

I think that the 2nd is the Federal Holiday this year. Banks & Federal offices will be closed. Just like the week the Monday 26th was a Federal Holiday. Oh & no mail service. There are plenty of Federal Holidays though when kids are in school. I remember going back on the 2nd, which fell on a Monday, once when I was in school. The kids here go back on the 4th. It was scheduled to be the 5th, but they have a Hurricane make-up day from Wilma.

By Kaye on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 10:09 pm:

My kiddos don't go back till the 9th..woo hoo!

By Vicki on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 10:18 pm:

Our school goes back on the 3rd. I guess I never really thought about it, but I wouldn't think it was a huge deal if they went back on Monday the 2nd. I am glad dd will have the extra day to make up some sleep from staying up on the 31st though.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 10:24 pm:

Well, my parents would pay for us to have a hotel room and to have the kids all be able to play with each other in the pool and whatnot, if we didn't have school on Monday. My sisters' kids must all have off. So, my kids are bummed that they don't get this special time.

We are going up to their house on Sunday to open presents and have our Christmas holiday together. The hotel thing would have been fun. Instead, we get to drive 2.5 hours there, have our day and drive 2.5 hours home.

I guess we aren't the only ones.

Kids go back on the 2nd.

By Crystal915 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:14 pm:

Ok, I woke DH up to ask, since I knew he had a 4 day weekend for New Years. They are off for the 1st and 2nd.

By Crystal915 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:20 pm:

Federal holidays 2006 Oh, and that should say they are off for the 30th and the 2nd.

By Paulas on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:42 pm:

In Canada we have the Monday off and don't start school until the 3rd.

By Enchens on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 12:52 am:

This is an interesting thread. I thought it was just my husband's job that was doing this holiday after the holiday thing. He had to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas this year, but his job was counting Monday as the holiday, so he doesn't get paid for working a holiday, even though he technically did work on Christmas!

I'll tell you who the fool is who did this nonsense, it had to be a man! :)

By Enchens on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 12:53 am:

I should say he doesn't get holiday pay for working Christmas.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 12:56 am:

Bummer, Enchens. That doesn' seem right, either!

But that is how it was for the guys who did work Christmas and will work New Year's. DH worked on the day after Christmas and will work after New Year's and gets holiday pay for it.

By Conni on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 06:00 am:

My entire family got Monday off after Christmas and Monday off after New Yrs... Kids go back on the 3 or 4? I need to find out. lol

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 08:10 am:

I don't think there is any such thing as a "legal" holiday - that is, a holiday for which by law all employers must give their employees paid time off or which mandates that all public entities (federal/state/local offices and schools) must be closed. There are, in the U.S., federal holidays for which all federal offices and most courts are closed, bank holidays, and state holidays for which all state offices and most courts are closed, but I am not aware of any law which says any particular day is a "legal" holiday. There are also "customary" holidays, and some days are set in union contracts. When I first moved to Pennsylvania, supermarkets, because of their union labor contracts, were closed the Monday after Easter. Those dates on the calendar marked "(holiday) observed" are based on what is "customary" and what many businesses will do, but certainly not all. Think for a minute of the many supermarkets, department and chain stores which were open on December 25th and will be open on January 1st.

Yeah, it sucks, more or less (I'm neither a sports nor a parade fan), but you can either send your kids to school or keep them home and write a note. All of the parents in your school district will be faced with the same choice, and I suspect absenteeism will be high.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 08:57 am:

Yeah, I would be tempted to keep them home, but I have to go to work, for my noon supervisor job, so they may as well go to school. If I didn't have the school job, I probably would keep them home.

By Kernkate on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 09:41 am:

Our kids go back on the 2nd as well. Snow make up day for them.
My DH who is a mechanic for a Chevy dealership is even off on the 2nd.

By Luvn29 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 10:33 am:

Dawn, can't you call in, too? Tell them you'll be out of town. It's the truth. And I don't see that they will make a big deal out of it since it is a holiday weekend...

How long do you work? A couple of hours? I wouldn't make the kids and yourselves miss out on what could be tons of fun for just a couple of hours...

By Sunny on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 11:44 am:

Are you sure they didn't add that day when they made up the calendar to compensate for a snow day? I know our district adds on 2 or 3 days to the calendar in anticipation of unscheduled snow or emergency days. Just a thought.

My kids go back on the 3rd.

By Melanie on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 12:52 pm:

Our kids are off until the 9th. I am thrilled to have that entire first week of January with them! :)

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 01:50 pm:

We only have one built-in snow day and if we would have more than one, we just go extra days at the end of the year.

By Breann on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 08:17 pm:

I thought it was a legal holiday. All of our post offices are closed. The sign on their doors say "legal holiday". All of our banks are closed too. Obviously our schools are closed as well.

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 09:27 pm:

It is a "federal" holiday, so the federal government is off, but schools aren't required to close.

By Marcia on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 10:19 am:

I would call in, too. You could just let them know you made out of town hotel plans believing th at it was a stat holiday.
My kids don't go back til the 9th!

By Breann on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 07:58 pm:

You're right Crystal. I looked today and it says federal. My mistake :)

By Breann on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 08:02 pm:

Ginny, there is such thing as "legal holiday". However it doesn't follow the rule that you posted about employers being required to give EVERYONE the day off. But, "legal holiday" is a term used in the United States.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 11:11 pm:

Well, we are staying at the hotel. I'll call in and say the kids aren't going to school and then we'll leave early enough for me to get back by 11:30am, so I can work. They hardly ever see their cousins and really hardly ever miss school.

Emily is bummed about missing band, but she'll get over it. They haven't missed any days of school yet this year. (knock on wood) Everyone's been healthy!

By Luvn29 on Friday, December 30, 2005 - 10:23 am:

Well, it's good that you reached middle ground! Does Emily have band in the morning or afternoon? If in the afternoon, she could always go in for half a day. Lots of kids do that here if they start feeling better...

I'm sure you all will have so much fun!!

By Dawnk777 on Friday, December 30, 2005 - 12:51 pm:

Sarah says Emily has band, either 1st or 2nd hour, so she is just going to miss it altogether. She'll get her band fix on Wednesday! I think being able to see and play with all the cousins, will trump missing band.

By Annie2 on Friday, December 30, 2005 - 06:33 pm:

Dawn, great decision, to stay the night. You won't regret it, neither will the girls. Have a fantastic time with your family! :)

By Dawnk777 on Friday, December 30, 2005 - 10:16 pm:

Thanks, Annie!

By Kernkate on Friday, December 30, 2005 - 10:24 pm:

Dawn, Have a great time:) I think you have made a good decision!

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 01:50 am:

High Point Inn

Apparently my folks sprang for 2-room suites for all of us! Each family gets their own suite! It will be a blast. This is a touristy area and we usually stay with mom and dad. The hotels and stuff are expensive! This will be a treat!

By Annie2 on Sunday, January 1, 2006 - 12:57 am:

I want to come too! Great looking hotel! Have GREAT time!!!!! :)

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, January 1, 2006 - 02:21 am:

Thanks! I can't wait. I think I'm going to take a bath on Monday, before we head home, because I don't have a whirlpool tub at home!

By Conni on Sunday, January 1, 2006 - 08:23 am:

That looks like a nice place! Hope you have a great time! Very nice of your parents. Nice way to start the New Year too! :)

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, January 1, 2006 - 08:30 am:

Have fun! Around here, all the schools' holidays were cut short for the entire year due to Katrina, but they are closed tomorrow, as are most businesses. The general rule of thumb is: Holiday falls on a Saturday, the work/school holiday is on Friday; holiday falls on a Sunday, the work/school holiday is on Monday.

Enjoy yourselves!!

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, January 1, 2006 - 09:58 am:

Thanks!

By Debbie on Sunday, January 1, 2006 - 10:09 am:

We have school too, Dawn. Dh is off and he thought I was nuts when I said the boys had school. I actually double checked the calender when we got home from our trip.

Have a great time. I would pull my dks out of school too for that trip.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, January 2, 2006 - 04:43 pm:

Well, we are back. We had fun. After we were done at my parents' house, my sisters and I went to the hotel. Kids swam, adults drank 'ritas, talked, and laughed. It was so good to see my sisters all together again.

Cheryl brought a "rita mix and cups. We just made the kids get us ice! I drank a lot!

AFter the pool closed for the night, the kids were all hanging out in one of the rooms watching tv, drinking rootbeer and eating popcorn! The hotel rooms are condos that people rent out, to defray the cost. They had full kitchens in them (microwave, fridge, stove, dishwasher and garbage disposal), gas fireplace, 3 tvs with dvd players, one whirlpool tub. Like my sister said, these are pretty good digs!

Anyway, now it's 2 hours and 20 minutes to pickup time and time isn't going very fast now!

So, the kids missed school and I still went to work. Some of my kindergarteners missed me over the break and had to have hugs! I sure loved that! Some of my coworkers thought I should have just called in and not come to work, too, but I wanted the money! Then we went to Applebee's for lunch, when I was done with work. They were crowded!

I think it was so worth staying overnight last night. The cousins had so much fun together and the adults had much fun talking, catching up, and telling funny stories! My youngest sister said we need to do this more often.

We used to get together more often, but then I think everyone's lives got busy and we got out of the habit!

By Annie2 on Monday, January 2, 2006 - 06:41 pm:

I'm glad you had a geat time! :)

By Dawnk777 on Monday, January 2, 2006 - 09:39 pm:

Thanks!
