Music download question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive December 2005 : Music download question
By Janet on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:17 am:

I got my dd an iPod Shuffle for Christmas, and we had a blast, putting music on it from her CDs. We tried to access iTunes, but either traffic was extremely heavy or our computer was too slow (or both), and we couldn't get there. So we went to Wal-Mart to download some cheap music, but there was a message that said they weren't compatible with Apple mP3 players--which, I assume, includes the Shuffle. Anyone had any experience with this? And, where are other sites that my dd could download from? TIA

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:55 am:

Sarah says you can only get songs from iTunes, for an iPod. iTunes usually works for us. She says to keep trying. Maybe today it will work better, since more people are back at work! There were probably a lot of iPods given for Christmas presents and traffic must have been high!

Sarah bought an album yesterday, since she got an iTunes giftcard for Christmas.

Well, that's kind of stinky, isn't it? I wonder what they have against Apple? Oh well. My dd got a gift card for Christmas, too. We'll try it when she gets home from her dad's. Thanks!

More than likely it isn't that Wal-mart and the others have something against Apple, but the other way around. If the iPod is only compatible with iTunes, then they know that they will get all the money for downloads, unlike if they were to make their iPods compatible with all of the music download sites...

By Jodes on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 10:07 pm:

I would think that you could download the music from Wal Mart, then it's in your music library, and from there, you can then load it into your ipod, doesn't make sense that it would matter where you are loading it to! I would try again, good luck!

I got an ipod for Christmas and I am having problems getting the crazy thing to work!! I think I have everything set up right in my computer and I downloaded some songs from a cd and I think they are showing up...but I am getting nothing out of my ipod!! LOL I am going to have to have someone come over and help me figure this thing out. I am soooo bad at this kind of stuff!!!!

We got my 13 yo the Ipod Shuffle for Christmas and it took alot of playing around for my dh to get the software to work. He and my ds were pretty frustrated with it. We dont have Apple computers and thats what these are really more compatible with. They did finally figure it out. But my ds was practically in tears thinking it wasnt going to work.

I will have to remember to use Itune's for him when downlaoding from the net. argh

Otherwise he loves it!

I gave Jen one for Christmas and she was having some trouble as well. She had to have her b'f's brother help her. LOL

We love our video ipod! Gary had Sarah load up some Nigara Falls pictures and then he was showing everyone the pictures, at Christmas! She only put on, about 20, though. We actually have over 300! So, we used it as a digital photo album!

We also bought a tape cassette adapter thingie, and a charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter, so that we can listen to tunes in the car! It is nice to listen to music, for the whole ride somewhere, without having to futz with the cds!

Ok, so what is trick to the ipod shuffle that I am missing? LOL Seems others are having the same problem as I am! At least I don't feel so silly now! Can anyone tell me the trick I am missing??

By Jodes on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 11:03 am:

Well, my son also got the ipod shuffle and we had absolutely no problems getting music in it! I was prepared for problems because I am not exactly the high tech person, but it was so easy for me, so I have no clue why some are having problems with it. I did install the itunes cd that came with it, and it all went very easily. The only "trick" I can think of, is to load the music first, whether from a cd or from the itunes store, then plug in the ipod to the USB 2 plug, and it should automatically take you to your ipod name, that was part of the set up with the itunes...then click auto fill, and it will show you at the top of the page that it's updating the ipod and to not disconnect, that takes a really short time, then it will say ipod updated, safe to disconnect, and it's done!

We made playlists in iTunes ahead of time and then they just transfered to the iPod.

By Vicki on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 08:39 am:

Ok Jodes, that is exactly what I did with my ipod, but then when I took it out and plugged in my head phones, I get nothing out of it! I have the little icon of the ipod on itunes and when I click on it, is shows the songs that I wanted on my ipod, but I am getting no sound out of it at all. Like nothing is on there. Ok, I have a really stupid question here, but do you charge the ipod by leaving it in your computer or is there something else I should be doing for that? I am thinking it is fully charged because when I click on the little battery thing on the back, it lights a little green light and that should mean it is charged right?? I told you all I am really bad at this stuff. LOL

By Vicki on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 08:50 am:

hmmmm...MAY have found my problem?? Even though when I click on the battery thing on the back, I did just read that when it is charging, it is amber and when it is fully charged it is green. So I plugged it in and the light on top is amber colored. So I will let it go until it is green and try again!! I hope that solves my problems!! argh

By Vicki on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 08:57 am:

Ok, I do have another question. Lets just hope that my post above fixes my problem. Does anyone know if/how I can put dd's ipod on there too? Dh bought us each one and I am not sure how to go about adding her ipod on there. Is that possible?? We do have a laptop that I can download hers too, but would prefer to have it on mine just so I can be sure what all she is downloading etc to it. LOL

By Jodes on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 10:20 am:

OK, when you plug in the ipod and you click on your little ipod icon, did you then click the auto fill button that is at the bottom of the page?? Then, it should show you at the top that it's updating the ipod and not to disconnect it, and then it tells you when it's ready? It will also actually show you it loading the names of the songs. And yes, you are right, you need to charge the ipod by plugging it into the same USB plug for about 4 hours before you use it, my son's took a little less, you do want that green light. As far as the other ipod goes, I would just try plugging it in and see what happens, it may make another icon, and then maybe you could name that one as your daughter's, not sure about that though. Good luck, I sure hope you get it working, cause it is really awesome!!

By Melanie on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 10:52 am:

When you plug in the second ipod, it will recognize that there is a different one and ask you to name it. I have three on my computer. It will recognize each one when they are plugged in. Good luck!!!

By Vicki on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 11:29 am:

Ok, it is fully charged and I even went back in and deleted all the songs that were "supposed" to be on there and did the auto fill from library again, it said it was updating not to unplug and all of that...update complete, took it out and nothing!!! argh!! why does nothing work for me!!!

By Jodes on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 01:37 pm:

Oh, Vicki, I just don't understand!! Did you make sure the volume is turned up? That is all I can think of, maybe you could call and get technical support, good luck.

By Brandy on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 02:12 pm:

I'm not yelling in the caps here but

GO TO THE LIBRARY AND GET SOME CD'S FOR FREE AND GO HOME AND PUT THEM ON YOUR IPOD = )

i didn't even think about this and my brother in law (after i sold him my ipod lol) told me that is what he had been doing = ) of course i never used the ipod so it didn't bother me lol = ) good luck and i found the ipod easy to use but when i was messing with trying to get songs on to my sil mp3 player i could of screamed i'm sure i did a few times lol = )

WOO HOO!!! I FINALLY have songs on my ipod!! Ended up somehow finding a message board for ipods and found several posts from people having the same problems as I was having. I finally found a post that was from someone that actually talked with someone in tech support and she took the time to type out step by step instructions and now I have music!! Now, I just need to go work on dd's. We have decided to go ahead and put hers on her laptop. But at least I have one up and working!!

By Wife2jason on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 11:08 pm:

It's illigal to download songs off of a CD that you did not purchase. So I wouldn't suggest the whole library thiing.......
