Pet question? Survey :)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive December 2005 : Pet question? Survey :)
By Annie2 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 11:40 pm:

If you were eating at a restaurant, say... an Olive Garden; would you be put off if someone carried in their small dog in a purse-like carrier, set it on the floor; away from other patrons and the dog did not make a peep?

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 12:08 am:

No, that wouldn't bother me. The dog is tucked away and if it was quiet, you would hardly know it was there.

That said, I probably wouldn't bring my own dog into a restaurant, if I had a small enough dog to fit in a purse-like carrier.

I already eat meals at home, with a dog nearby. I don't see how that would be much different.

By Tink on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 12:53 am:

Yes, it would bother me. I just find it disrespectful of the other patrons. There may be allergy or germ issues that shouldn't have to be dealt with during dinner in a restaurant.

By Paulas on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 01:34 am:

No, I wouldn't mind as long as it stayed in the pet carrier. I could understand why it would be frowned upon, however, since many have allergies.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 01:43 am:

I didn't think of the allergy issue.

By Missbookworm on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 02:34 am:

Here I see signs on business ALL the time about bringing pets into restaurants. It's against health regulations or something. I also see them on some stores.

I don't really see the point in bringing a pet to a restaurant...

By Ginny~moderator on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 05:40 am:

It's against the law here, and I would be bothered by an attempt to break the law. Unless the dog is a guide dog or other type of companion for medical reasons, dogs are barred from all places selling or serving food in this area.

I am always bothered by people who feel that for some reason the laws or rules don't apply to them.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 07:32 am:

It wouldn't bother me personally, but I think I'd be concerned about folks with allergies. And of course the other obvious health concerns that *some* animals may bring. Ditto Ginny, in most places it's illegal.

However, there are (used to be pre-Katrina) a couple of restaurants/bars in N.O. where dogs were allowed. They were neighborhood places in the Lower Garden District where my sister has a condo, but everyone pretty much knew everyone, so it wasn't a problem.

There's an old historic motel in Appalachicola, FL where dogs are allowed, in the rooms and in the common areas as well.

All this being said, if it's not a place where animals are specifically allowed, then my feeling is, you shouldn't bring them. Period.

By Insaneusmcwife on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 07:37 am:

We traveled across country with a puppy and took her inside fast food places but not without permission from the manager and only because it was 110 degrees outside. I would have never dreamed to take her inside if it wasn't so hot. At night, when it was cooler we left her in the vehicle with the windows rolled down part way. But never did we take her into a restraunt. Why do you ask?

By Reds9298 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 07:42 am:

Wouldn't bother me. Happens on planes all the time and that's *really* small.

By Jackie on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 07:55 am:

Im not sure it would bother me or not. I love dogs, but certainly wouldnt dream about taking a dog into a restaurant, except a seeing eye dog. But, Im sure if it were in a small carrier under the table and didnt make a sound, then it wouldnt be a problem.

By Hlgmom on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 08:02 am:

In many, many public places it is illegal to bring any animal but a guide dog inside! (grocery stores etc)
I personally would not like it but mostly due to fear for other peoples health etc- also- I do not have a dog and would not particularly want to share a meal with one in a place that I am paying to eat! :)

By Marg on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 08:30 am:

Yes,(we live in PA like Ginny posted, we live beside the Maryland border and I believe it is the same there) it is illegal and there are health violations and owners are at risk of breaking them, paying a fine and getting their name in the paper.

Dh was in pest control for 3 years and knew the health code violations.

By Momofmax on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 09:37 am:

I wouldn't want to eat next to a dog (even a small one in a carrier) at a restaurant. I have a dog so it's not that I don't like dogs. I just don't think it's sanitary and where are the lines drawn?

By Kate on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 09:38 am:

Yes. I am not a pet person at all and would leave the restaurant if this happened. If I wanted to eat with a dog I would get a dog and eat at home with it! My old neighbor did this alllll the time with her poodle. This dog went EVERYWHERE with them. And they had a very active social life, so this poodle really lived it up!

By Cat on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 09:53 am:

The dog wouldn't bother me, but like Ginny said it is against the law. I'm a very rule oriented person and that's what would bother me. If they'd gotten permission from the manager/owner, then all's well, but I seriously doubt some place like Olive Garden would give someone permission unless like Kristie's example of extreme weather (hot OR cold).

By Kaye on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 10:12 am:

Yep

By Boxzgrl on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 10:58 am:

It wouldn't bother me one bit. I love seeing people spend more time with their pets. And for the most part these "pocket pets" are generally well behaved and you'd never know they were there.

By Janet on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:21 am:

Yes! I really, really dislike the little dog-in-a-purse thing. I had a customer come up to my teller window last week with her dog in a purse, and plopped it down on the counter right in my face. I had to count her money out with the dog breathing on me...ugh. I think she was put out because I didn't tell her how adorable he was, but I was actually considering asking her to put it on the floor. I think it's ridiculous. And, for the record, I really and truly do love animals, I just think unless they are working dogs, they need to stay home or outside. And definitely not in a restaurant.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:53 am:

I don't know if I could really carry my dog, everywhere, if I had a dog that small. One doesn't spend that much time in the bank. Couldn't the dog have waited in the car? If it was too cold to stay in the car, then the dog should have stayed home!

By Shellyg on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 01:06 pm:

It would not bother me at all, but I think it is a bit prejudice... This is why.
My 130 pound dog is well behaved, professionally trained. Why is it fair to bring a rat dog in a bag and not a large dog?

By Breann on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 02:23 pm:

Yes. It would REALLY bother me. And, let me say that I am an avid pet lover. Pets are SUPER important to me and also to my family. I'm the one you would see in tears if someone in the park were to hit their dog, etc.

I would probably complain to the manager that they should have a "no pets" rule in their restaurant. A restaurant is not a place for a dog.

By Janet on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 04:00 pm:

LOL Shelly!

By Groovepickle on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 04:08 pm:

I would be annoyed, both because it's bad for people with allergies and because I just think it's gross. Just like people who let their cats walk on the counter/tables. Yum Yum! I always wanted litter box feet near my food:).
:) Groove
PS. I also love animals and once gave a cat mouth to mouth to save it.

By Reds9298 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 04:42 pm:

Wow, I did not know this was a LAW! I have been on many flights where small dogs are allowed in carriers in such as this. That seems WAY worse to me for allergies or dog accidents in such a confined space vs. a restaurant atmosphere where ultimately the dog could just be taken to the car if necessary. I'm also surprised at how many people wouldn't like this. I'm a huge dog lover though, and this dog sounds like it wasn't a noise or odor problem....To each his own:)

By Kaye on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 05:17 pm:

LOL groove. I wish there were a way to keep my litter pawed cat off the countertops! Good news is I don't keep dishes or food out, so she doesn't step on those!

By Enchens on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 07:01 pm:

Did you all know that sometimes I see people bring their little dogs in to the dr.'s office in their purses? I've even seen them at stores. It does bug me for many reasons-allergies, hygiene, the law, and mostly because what happens if a child tries to pet the dog? No one knows how ferocious it can be, even if it's a cute little thing. And if a small dog that fits in a purse is allowed, then are all types of pets of a certain size going to be allowed? I think that people who sneak in their pets are being rude.

By Annie2 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 08:16 pm:

Thanks everyone. I was wondering about the "pocket pet" etiquette. As you know, we have a new little addition to our family.
My kids want to buy a pet purse and take him places.
We were going to the mall the other day to return things then late lunch at the OG. They said to me if we have a pet purse then Gumbo can come along, too. Then I said no he couldn't because we are going out for lunch afterwards.
I told them pets were not allowed where food is served or purchased. Except of course for service dogs.
I was curious where everyone stood on this issue.
If I saw someone carry a pooch into a restaurant in a carrier, set it down out of sight and the dog didn't bother anyone; I wouldn't mind. I have heard, smelled and watched children in restaurants that bothered me more.
Thanks! :)

Aside from the other comments, which I agree with, about dog prejudices, allergies, etc. I have a problem with pets as fashion accessories in little Burberry bags and the like, a la Paris Hilton. I have a bias of my own though--I'm not a fan of little dogs. I've always maintained that a dog you could drop kick across the room is not *really* a dog. :)

...Not that I'm into kicking dogs, of course.

By Bea on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 12:13 am:

Many of you would be very uncomfortable dining in Germany, where dogs are more welcome in restaurants than children. "You may see dogs accompanying their owners into German restaurants, pubs, and cafes. Many restaurants routinely allow dogs inside as well as to any outside seating, and will often provide a bowl of water for the pet. Dogs are particularly present when outside seating is available, because Germans love to sit outside when weather permits and to have their dogs with them." We saw many dog bowls provided, but very few high chairs.

Pam, I feel the same way. I cannot STAND Paris Hilton and all the publicity she gets for acting like a fickle, trashy party girl, and picking and choosing which *pet accessory* she's going to favor this week or next. UGH! She *really* gets under my skin, and whenever I see *pets in purses*, I think of her.

And my pet peeve aside, though I have many friends with small dogs, I prefer larger dogs for pets, the larger the better. LOL I have nothing against small dogs at ALL, I just prefer big dogs for pets - and I blame my sister for that - she had two Great Pyranese for years and I grew horribly attached to them. THOSE are big dogs! I thought my dog was a good size dog until we shaved her, and even @ 70 lbs., she looks SMALL with her hair shaved.

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 09:29 am:

Bea, I wouldn't be uncomfortable in any event. I'm not uncomfortable with dogs, since I have one who sits right next to the dinner table every night. What I resent is people who think the laws and rules don't apply to them - 'he's just a little dog so it's OK'. That's what I have a problem with.

As for keeping cats off the tables or workcounters - anyone who has ever had a cat knows that is just like spitting into the wind - a real exercise in futility. You just wipe the table/counter down with soapy water or a cleaning spray before you use it each time - or you stop keeping cats.

By Reds9298 on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 10:01 am:

Ditto Bea...dogs go everywhere in Europe with their owners. Of course, I've never seen a big dog there either. Always little ones and they're so well-behaved. (At least in my experience!:))

By Cat on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 12:29 pm:

Bea, it wouldn't bother me at all if it were legal. I understand that some people (myself included) consider their pets their four-legged children. That doesn't mean I'm going to take my hyper-barks-at-everything mini-schnauzer to a restaurant with me! lol Well, maybe an outdoor restaurant. :)

By Missmudd on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 12:44 pm:

I understand that people that bring their dogs to restaurants love their pets, and that is good. The thing that bugs me is that they think everyone should love them. I really dont like small dogs. I have met some really nice small dogs, and I make exceptions to them, but mostly I see them as noisy little heel bitters. I see behavior from them that if it was a big dog, you would have them put down as vicious. And it makes me cranky that people bring them into restaurants. Children are not forbidden in restaurants, dogs are.

By Cocoabutter on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 01:26 pm:

As cute as those dogs can be, they are still an animal, and I do believe that all animals are forbidden in restaurants (except for service dogs.)

By Annie2 on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 08:58 pm:

Thanks everyone, again.
Many places do not note that animals are not allowed these days into the premises, so my kids couldn't understand this law.
I love large dogs, too. We have a 140lb German Shepard and a 50 lb Golden mix. Of course I wouldn't even consider taking them into a business because they couldn't be carried in a small bag unnoticed.
Just a side note: many small pooches are hypo-allergenic because they have hair not fur.

By Cat on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 10:54 pm:

Annie, I want to say THANK YOU for following the rules. We have a young girl in our karate class who last summer got a puppy. It was a small dog (silky terrier) and her mom would bring it to class. Our class is in an elementary school gym. Very against the rules. This puppy would get excited every time someone would pet it and pee on the gym floor. The mom's excuse was she worked all day and the poor puppy was alone, so she wanted to bring it to class so it wouldn't be alone longer than it had to be. Then we saw them one day in Home Depot--with the pup in the cart. The puppy saw me and peed, right there in Home Depot. I don't know what's changed, but he hasn't been to class for a few months, which in mho, is a good thing. When he was there, he'd bark and disrupt the class, and they'd often let him to the end of his leash where he'd be in our way. My point is (pardon my rambling) they're teaching their daughter that's it okay to break rules or that not all rules apply to her (and she's already got some authority issues). She's only 9yo. What's she going to be like at 16? How 'bout 20? We need to teach our children that even though we may not agree with the rules we need to follow them. Rules don't apply only to certain people, but to everyone. Again, I say "Thank you" for teaching your children that. Kudos, Annie. :)

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 11:09 pm:

I don't like Paris Hilton, either, especially since her dog is more like a fashion accessory, more than a companion.

I don't know if Jasmine would lay nice and be quiet, if she was in a restaurant, but I'm not about to find out!
