Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive December 2005 : Presents?
By Dawnk777 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 12:18 am:

From DH, a Lands' End waffle-weave shirt and 6 bars of homemade soap. The homemade soap is becoming a tradition! LOL! For the LE shirt, I looked on the website and emailed him some suggestions. He would never know what to buy me, by just browsing himself.

From SIL Lila, some warm socks, beautiful tan Egyptian cotton towels (they are sooo soft!), and some pretty blue Isotoner dress gloves.

From my niece, Lyn, Gary and I got a gift package, with cheese, sausage, and mustard.

From my nephew and his girlfriend, I got the CUTEST snowman candle holder and six cranberry votives to put in it, and a snowman pillow. The pillow has a country-ish snowman running in the snow, so fast that his scarf is straight out behind him. It says Dashing Through the Snow on it!

I'm very happy with all my gifts.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 12:49 am:

DD (16) got me an Italian Charm Bracelet, her very first present to me that she bought with money she earned and she is very proud of it. She also bought a very nice card, she wrote a note inside that made me cry and I will hold on to that card for the rest of my life. One of those, all this has been worth it moments..

The girls (8) got me two glass angels and a pack of ink pens. They are always stealing my pens and I am always complaining about it, so it was an inside joke..

My DS (13) has shown me what a fine young man he is becoming and even though he didn't buy me an actual gift, his actions over the past few months would make any gift seem small.. My son has taken to waiting for me at the door and walking me to the car when we go out.. Actually offering me his elbow, opening and closing my car door. He will ask me if I would like a drink if he is getting himself something. Checks in before he goes to bed to see if I need anything before he turns in. Handing out the hugs and the I love yous. It is as if he is growing up over night.. Makes me sad but it shows me that he has been listening. I think he is on the right path..

The kids are actually all being very good to me.. they might be brats sometimes but I can say that if they turn out half as good as they are now then I have done a great job.. They still are giving me those first moment excitement feelings... You know the excitement over a new word, first step... Those are gifts no amount of money can buy.. Love my kids, can you tell?

My mom got me a fleece throw and a new bible with large print.

My dad got me a sweater.

I am pleased with everything I received too.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 12:57 am:

Emily made a comment tonight, that she was being pretty patient, waiting to open presents. We always eat first, then clear the table, load the dishwasher, put food away, before we get to presents. I think other years, she would have been going crazy. She is growing up, too. On her next birthday, coming up in March, she will be 14.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 01:08 am:

Dillan will 14 in February..

By Dawnk777 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 01:41 am:

Oh neat! You have a 16yo too, don't you! Babysit Barb, also has kids my age!

By Crystal915 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 03:45 am:

DH got me silicone bakeware, yoga pants, and a beautiful robe. (All things I asked for!) My parents gave us a gorgeous set of luggage, I felt so grown up with my very own real luggage, LOL! My in-laws gave me a Coke clock, my kitchen is done in Coke theme, and I've been eyeing the clock for a while now. :) All great gifts! And yes, I'm up late, but I have a toothache :(

By Unschoolmom on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 08:08 am:

My parents got us a sheet set that I love.
The inlaws got us a digital camera.
Husband gt me a computer game, some Bruce Lee movies and lots of chocolate (despite the fact we weren't supposed to buy for each other :))
Kids got me gloves and slippers.

I got less this year then ever before but enjoyed it so much more.

By Karen~moderator on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 09:24 am:

Bobbie, Jules gave me a Christmas card one year that both broke my heart and made me so proud of her. In it she wrote *Thank you for loving me when no one else could.* I cherish that card and will keep it forever.

By Jackie on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 09:41 am:

My husband bought me a new Dell Computer. This is a very nice gift. BUT, I was a little suprised, WHY you ask??? Well we have 4 internet ready computers, as well as 2 laptops. My husband builds computers for people, he makes extra money fixing and building computers for people. The one I was using was fine, was faster then most, and did everything I needed. So although this was a nice gift, I was a little suprised.
My son gave me 4 small beenie babies(hes bought these new at flea markets)and one of them was an angel beanie baby. He knows that Ive started to collect angels after I had my miscarriages. Also he gave me this small angel figureine(Spelled wrong)
My parents do not give me anyting for Hanukkah, they send the kids money every year.
My husbands side of the famiy sends money as well to all of us and the kids.
So compared to you all, I really didnt open up much for Christmas. BUT, it was a VERY well meaning Christmas to me. The kids all had a blast. And who couldnt be happier with Christmas in the morning with presents, then opening up their first Hanukkah present on the same night. Spoiled, Spoiled, spoiled.

By Insaneusmcwife on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 09:42 am:

Dh got me a block set of Henkels Knives, a Tilting-turn table for my cakes, an apple candle holder the kind that you put the tea light in the bottom and it heats up the wax on top, a robe and a cupcake tree. All of which I am very pleased with. Most women complain when they get kitchen stuff, but that is what I ask for, lol.

By Yjja123 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 09:51 am:

Hubby and kids gave me:
A lapis necklace, a lapis/sterling watch, A band saw, A KitchenAid chopper, A KitchenAid attachment to my mixer that also chops and slices, a bottle of Baileys and some yummy chocolates in my stocking.

By My3cuties on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 10:03 am:

DH got me flowers, but that isn't anything uncommon. We decided to go all out for the girls this year so we didn't really expect anything. BUT..

My grandma dean got me a picture frame and a calendar.
My mom got me a set of 3 different sizes of skillets.
My Oma got me a really nice off-white scarf, it is so soft & also gave us $30
My sister got me a beautifulo picture frame that look slike a scrapbooking page (about sisters) and a glass tealight candle holder and some apple tealight candles.

The girls on the other hand loaded up. I am going to go through their toys again and try to make some room.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 10:32 am:

What nice gifts everyone has gotten! My Kitchenaid slicer/shredder broke and I haven't gotten a new one! I keep forgetting about it! Have to put that back on my list!

By Luvn29 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 10:59 am:

Well, I have to say I was spoiled this year!

My dad went out the week before Christmas and bought me a new electric skillet because mine stopped working, and he knows I use it for everything, and most of the time, I cook enough for my parents... He said NO it is NOT a Christmas gift...

My parents got all of us our own luggage for Christmas. They even got both kids their own set of pull along luggage. They gave it to us before our trip at Thanksgiving, and the kids were so proud to have their own that they could take to the hotel room themselves!
They also got me two really nice sweaters and a leather case for my digital camera.

My kids always go to Hallmark with my hubby every Christmas to buy my Precious Moments figurine for me. Well, since my ds was four, he has taken to picking me out my very own keychain every Christmas. My hubby said he stands at the keychains reading them and studying them trying to find the perfect one. It always means so much. He also picked out a Ty Beanie Baby of Odie from Garfield, because he knows I love dogs.

My daughter picked out my Precious Moments, and it is so her! It is called "I'm Just Me" and it is a little girl with flipped blonde hair and she has a bead necklace and bracelet on that is made of real beads. So adorable. She always puts a lot of thought into those.

My darling husband who did waaay too much for me, but said I deserved it with all the hard work I've done this year... Bought me the GOOD Shiatsu massager pad that you place on a chair. It has all kinds of options on it, including being able to move the massagers to different positions, and such. He also got me a nice foot spa that I've been wanting, a brush set I had hinted for (and he actually picked up on it!!) and from him and the children a very pretty and very simple gold cross necklace with teeny diamonds accenting it. I was thrilled!

We all had a terrific and blessed Christmas!

By Pamt on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 11:37 am:

Since my birthday is a week before Christmas, I got birthday and Christmas presents since my brother and sister mail them all together.

DH-Denim jacket, DVDs (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and As Good as it Gets), book--Benedictine Hospitality, lots of candy in my stocking

Kids-New earrings that match the other earrings, bracelet, and necklace that they got me for my birthday

My parents--Money, diamond earrings, autographed copy of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and a kid's book about being the middle child from my mom--LOL (I'm the middle and so is she)

Inlaws-Down vest and $75 Gap gift card

Brother and SIL-2 Caphalon pts I had been wanting

Misc. goodies, candles, knickknacks from friends and neighbors.

As usual, too much stuff all around. I try each year to scale back, but it always ends up getting so out of control. We did have a nice Christmas though.

By Bellajoe on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 11:54 am:

My dd (6) got me a cute photo holder, kind of like a wallet but it only holds pictures. She bought it at her Snowflake Shop at school and has kept it a secret since Dec. 9th!

My dh got me some jeans and pajamas. I have to return them all. The pants are too big (which is nice i guess) and the PJ's had horizontal stripes on the pants...never a good thing to have horizontal stripes across your butt! LOL They are cute but just do not look good on me. He did get me matching slippers that are very cute. I"m keeping those!

My inlaws also gave me jeans that ended up being too big. And a pretty sweater, but which is very pretty but is just not a good color for me. So i will be exchanging those also :(

My brother and his family got me a Kelly Clarkson CD, a low carb cookbook and a waffle maker. All things i asked for :)

My mom is out of town, so we will exchange gifts with her next weekend.

From my BIL we got a weather thing that tells you the temp. inside and outside of hte house. And a Best Buy gift card.

My kids had a ball yesterday morning. They loved the scooters that Santa left them. They also got a bunch of board games: Operation, Mousetrap, Sorry!, Trouble, and they also got some books, clothes and some other toys.

By Reds9298 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 12:31 pm:

They also got me a new ring and a very pretty heart necklace. She also always gets me new lip glosses from AVON that I like but never buy.

By Missbookworm on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 02:56 pm:

We haven't opened all the presents yet but so far I got from my db (darling boyfriend) a new set of speakers for my computer (he said the ones you had were crap!) LOL, a beautiful necklace with a butterfly on it and stones that look like shells (I can't remember what it's called) all on a beautiful chain. Dreamcatcher earrings for me to wear at night to maybe help me sleep (I don't often sleep well) I thought that was really sweet) I also got 3 puzzles from him and a puzzle mat (on my b'day but it's close to Christmas) I still have a few things under the tree. My children come home today so we'll be opening the rest.

I also got an mp3 player and a few books from one of my friends and some beautiful handmade sparkly silver candles. :)

I also got $75 in gift cards for the bay and used it to go out and buy myself a really good coffee pot :)

By Truestori on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 05:10 pm:

I'm sitting in my new leather computer chair that DH got me! He said he just knew I would take it back...NOT

I also got a bookshelf that matches my computer desk, along with a calendar, dayplanner, nice pens etc.

My DH also bought me a new coupon organizer and put $500.00 in it! He said that it was money for me to spend on clothes, and my orthopedic shoes. These special shoes run about 150 a pair so I haven't purchased any as of yet. I have needed to get these shoes for quite sometime and he has been saving this especially for me. I can't believe it. I was so shocked, all I could do was hug him. :)

By Paulas on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 05:30 pm:

Dh got me a red sweather (every teacher needs a red sweather and mine was wearing out :) ) and a new pair of curling shoes. I'll have to take the shoes back for a different size but they are just what I wanted.

DK-some stuff for my hair to take the frizzies away.

Sister-got DH and I a George Foreman grill. We love it and will use it often.

Brother-a curling figurine and a braclet made from a neat glass-type stone.

Inlaws-a sweather

Grandmother-sent money but we haven't decided what to buy with it yet.

By Breann on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 06:27 pm:

My DD got a red sweater :)

I got pj's, slippers and some other odds and ends. And, my DD made me a calendar. So sweet!

My inlaws got us a dvd player for the van.

By Crystal915 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 06:36 pm:

Pam, I love As Good As It Gets, it's my favorite movie!! My mom's birthday is Christmas, but we're going to visit in March, so I'm going to have a family necklace made for her. She has a mother's ring I had made when I was a teen, and I'm **hoping** we'll have pregnancy news by then so we can have a 3rd stone added!

By Karen~moderator on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 07:07 pm:

I can honestly say, I didn't have anything to open on Christmas. My sister had sent DH and I a 6 month gift cert. to Peets Coffee online, because we are VERY into our coffee. I opened it several days before Christmas. Jen gave me a framed pic of herself. Jules bought me a piece of pottery in Mexico, but it got broken in the airport. So no gifts for me.

Bobbie, I bet the charm bracelet is beautiful!

Yvonne, I have ordered a lapis/sterling watch for myself!!! LOL

Pam, wow, it sounds like you really racked up!

Crystal, are you TTC????????

Jackie, why don't you sell some of the *older* computers, or donate them? A computer is a GREAT gift!

Kristie, those Henckels knives are *quite* a gift! We own Henckels, and they are worth their weight in gold!

Adena/Crystal, luggage is a great gift too! I was still using a piece of luggage I got as a HIGH SCHOOL graduation gift, plus old stuff of my Moms, until 2 years ago!

Sounds like everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

By Yjja123 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 07:34 pm:

Karen--did you order the Ecclissi?
I love it! I have gotten a ton of compliments on it already. The blue is gorgeous. The best part is it is made smaller by locking into the second link. I have a tiny wrist and it fits perfect.

By Crystal915 on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 11:11 pm:

Karen, re: gifts to open on Christmas day, N and I are HORRIBLE about keeping secrets, we always end up giving gifts early. We each had one gift that we held off until after midnight on the 24th, N goes "IT'S OFFICIALLY CHRISTMAS! OPEN IT!!" LOL! And yes, we've been TTC since June, with no luck so far. If it doesn't happen this month then we'll probably move on to fertility testing in April, since guys will be in the field Jan and Feb, and we're going away in March. :(

By Tink on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 11:25 pm:

I was totally spoiled this year. DH surprised me with a new cell phone and a really great MP3 player. My mom and stepdad gave me a great new outfit for our big New Year's Eve party, a new watch and purse, a fun "key-keeper", and a larger Crock-Pot. My sister gave me a "new" vintage apron (I collect them) and my step-grandmother sent me a smooshy, soft robe and slippers. I have to exchange the gifts from my in-laws. I've read the books they got me and the bath stuff is in the only scent from B&BW that makes my DH sick. :( My best friend also sent me a Tinkerbell purse that I've been carrying around since I opened it! :)

By Bea on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 12:26 am:

Hubby gave me a new work island for the kitchen, a flat screen monitor for my computer, pearl earrings, spa scents for the hot tub, slippers and gift certificates for 12 massages. Our sons gave us gift certificates for Outback, Red Lobster, AMC Theaters, and the local Comedy Club. Doug's girlfriend gave me a scent stories machine and several refills.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 01:47 am:

Karen, we bought new pull-along luggage, for the kids, for our Niagara trip, last summer. We used the same tired, blue Samsonite suitcase, that I have also had since high school. One of the hinges is broken and you have to make sure everything is lined up to be able to latch it! It's ready for the dump heap. Before we go on vacation next summer, that old blue suitcase is going to be replaced! Besides a suitcase on wheels would be REALLY nice! That blue suitcase was a graduation present, but graduation was in 1978!

So, all of you who got new luggage? Lucky you!

By Crystal915 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 02:24 am:

Dawn, if you're interested, the set we received is American Tourister, and was 60% at JCPenneys. Very good deal, all the big bags are rolling.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 07:42 am:

Yvonne, YES! I have 5 Ecclissi watches already! LOL I also sent my sister an oxidized silver Ecclissi for Christmas.

Dawn, we have 2 different brands, one is Samsonite, and it's all on wheels - we have 6 or 7 pieces. The problem is, the Samsonite is heavy and we can't fill it up without going over the airline weight limit. So we have also bought Timberland rolling duffels and we LOVE them! We have 4 pieces of that. So we have WAY more luggage than we need. I think I posted a few months ago about opinions on trying to sell some of the Samsonite. We may just give some of it to the kids.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 07:48 am:

Crystal, good luck!

By Tunnia on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 08:53 am:

It sounds like everyone had a pretty good Christmas, except Karen-- I'm sorry that you didn't have any presents under your tree, but the coffee sounds great!:)

I was super-spoiled this year!

Dh gave me an Ipod Shuffle and an Itunes gift card I LOVE it!!! He also gave me the neatest candle from Brookstone. It is real scented wax like a candle, but it has LED lights that flicker like a real candle so I get the real candle look and smell, but no flame. It has auto shut-off after two hours so I don't have to remember to turn it off and the box states that the lights should last for 100,000 hours of use. Dd gave me a tart warmer that matches my bathroom and several Yankee candle tarts. Ds gave me a gift bag full of Caphalon utensils and two different microplaners. I love it all!:)

My parents gave dh and I a beautiful picture to hang over our sofa that we picked out down in Florida. It is beautiful and matches our living room perfectly. My parents also gave me a Yankee candle set with six candles and a holder, a Moose Munch bar from Harry and David (it was yummy!), new lip gloss and nail polish from Ulta, warming footie slippers (you warm them up in the microwave), and a couple of blown glass ornaments.

My brother and future sil (he proposed on Christmas Eve:)) gave me another itunes gift card.

My mil *sigh* gave me a wooden lazy susan with dings and peeling veneer with four baby pink strawberry shaped dishes and a baby pink peach shaped bowl in the center -- all severely chipped and cracked and she knows that I don't care for the color pink.:( Can you tell that she never puts any though into a gift for me??? Every year I get used junk that she doesn't want in her house any longer. Really, after 13 years of crummy used gifts dh and I just laugh about it. Dh said something to her about it a couple of years ago and she got spitting mad at him. This year she told him that if he saw anything under the tree that he had seen before that he would just have to get over it. LOL:)

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 09:26 am:

Oh ugh, that you get used gifts for Christmas, Tunnia!

When I was growing up, my grandma on my mom's side always gave odd presents, or ugly shirts. We just got used to it and accepted graciously. Not much else you could do. My other grandparents were better at buying gifts. I'm sure I got cool stuff, but I really can't remember now. In college, they started giving us checks. As poor college students, we really appreciated the money!

By Ginny~moderator on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 11:01 am:

My wonderful bosses gave me a Nokia T-mobile cell phone with 1000 prepaid minutes on it - for my safety, they say. You can understand why I love working in this job.

By Shellyg on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 01:11 pm:

I received the Ugg boots that I have wanted forever, they were always sold out! Nordstroms, Sephora, and Starbucks gift cards, all my favorite places. My daughter made an ornament in her class with her picture in it that I adore. That would have to be my favorite present.

By Paulas on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 03:06 pm:

Shelly, please make sure you mention that the picture ornament will be a cherished gift to her teacher. Making parent gifts is sometimes a difficult and expensive task for teachers and too often parents don't ever mention them to us. It's nice to know that they were appreciated.

By Kaye on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 03:07 pm:

I got new dishes (fiestaware), lots of tennis balls, scrapbook stuff, all things I will use and love. From my hubby I got some bubble bath, a dooney phone case, and some nightgowns. Overall I got nice stuff.

By Conni on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 03:14 pm:

Tunnia- my ds got an Ipod Shuffle and absolutely loves it too!!! He had asked for a specific Mp3 player from Santa- so I was a little worried that he might be upset about the fact that Santa decided on a diff player. He was SO excited and we never heard anything but Thank you's from him. *phew!*

Had to giggle about your mil's gifts. :) What if you re-gifted them and gave them back to her next yr? rofl

By Kym on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 - 08:14 pm:

I was way too spoiled this year!

DH:Sony digital camera, diamond earrings, shoes, 2 1 hour massage gift certificates, plus he traded out (he owns a bike store) w/ the chiropractor for some much needed adjustments.

DS1: Deamond Pendant (funded by dh)

DS2: Jeans/shirt (funded by dh)

ds3: nothing:) He doesn't like to shop yet

DD: A great/hip outfit, she picked out and paid for with her own money! She was so happy to pay for all of her gifts for brothers and friends this year from her saving her babysitting money.

Inlaws: A diamond pendent and snowman decoration ( I collect them)

We had a great Christmas!

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 09:10 am:

My SIL gave me these awesome Egyptian cotton towels. They were good enough, when Sarah and I used them yesterday, but then I washed them, and they got so soft and fluffy! I feel very pampered.

In fact, the 13yo was going to take a shower in the morning, but then changed her mind to do it later, so that the new towels could be washed and dried, because she wanted to try them out, too.

I think we are going to have to buy 2 more bath towels, so that we have 4 of them! LOL!

By Conni on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 11:23 am:

from dh-

I finally got the jewelry armiore (sp?) I have been mentioning for the last 2 yrs at every holiday. lol It is so pretty! Persistance pays off.

from dk's-

I got a really cool fish bowl for our beta fish. Its from Kirklands and has a bronzed finish. There is a guy sitting on one side fishing. His fishing pole sticks out over the fish bowl with line hanging down in the water, fish on end of line. Really neat!

I got a large round old world style clock from Kirkland's at the dirty santa game. (it was the gift I took to the game! lol I played for it- it got stolen from me 2x and then somehow I lucked out and was able to steal it back! woohoo) It looks great in my house. :)

Ex husb-

gave dh and I tickets to the movies. I guess it was suppose to be from the boys. My ds was so excited to give us this envelope that he had hidden under the tree. It was addressed to us from : Santa. Had card and tickets inside. lol Thought that was pretty cool!!

Had a great Christmas!
