Getting dogs for Christmas...

Not me, of course LOL... But I do the phone work 2 days a week for a local rescue group. It seems that this week, "everybody" is looking to adopt. Believe me when I say its a nice change then getting phone calls about people wanting to give up their dogs. But, sometimes I dont think its such a great idea to give somebody a pet for Christmas. Im glad that the process is not a quick one for adopting, gives people time to realize and research what it takes to be a responsible pet owner. One lady called and said Santa promised one of her kids a puppy for Christmas...hmmm I wonder which Santa that was. Well I can firmly say, that Santa wont be getting a puppy from our rescue group LOL

We gave our kids a dog from a rescue for Christmas, but we actually had to give the promise of a dog---sort of a gift certificate. They wouldn't adopy out for Christmas either. We had a crate and dog supplies that we gave our boys under the tree and we all went together to officially adopt her in January. I think it's a good policy not to adopt out for the holidays---saves a lot of impulse buys and mismatched dogs with homes.

I agree!

Our local humane society will not do pet adoptions during the two weeks before Christmas.

Any responsible animal adoption agency or breeder will not make a dog or cat available for Christmas. Too much excitement, too many other things to distract the new pet owner so that the bonding that is so important won't take place, and far too many hazards in the form of decorations, visitors (strangers to the animal), doors that may be left open, Christmas plants, etc., etc. And I thoroughly agree with this policy.

Most pet stores, of course, will sell you anything, up to and including Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Which is one of the many reasons so many dog and cat support organizations strongly urge you to not buy your pet from a pet store.

My favorite pet store in town, started selling puppies a month or two ago! I think it's dreadful and stopped going there to shop, a few months ago. I refuse to shop there, while they are selling puppies. They claim they aren't puppy mill dogs, but where else would they be getting the puppies from. The organization sold 85,000 puppies in 2002! Hunte Corporation

I don't really like anything having to do with the profit of making money off animals but if I we're forced to choose one it would be Hunte. The veterinarian I worked for toured their main facilities back in 2001 and came back quite impressed with tons of pictures to show. The facilities were remarkably clean and the pets were taken care of. They don't talk a lot about the parents because usually what they do is buy the puppies from private breeders who own the parents and the puppies are taken away at about 6 weeks. For the most part, the adults are never at the Hunte premises but at the homes owned by the breeder (though their new facilities under construction said it will start offering kennel buildings for the breeders). I know personally they are delivered in comfort and sanitary conditions because i've been aboard the trucks that deliver them. Both animals and humans have quite the comfortable transport aboard those semis.

I don't agree with puppy stores or breeders for that matter because I believe it's a selfish hobby. I don't believe in selling animals around the holidays because the chances are too high that they'll end up at the shelter or dead somewhere. And i'm not defending The Hunte Corp. but just giving an inside perspective of what I know about them. :)

Well, my new puppy is doing great. We bought him from a breeder two weeks before XMas. DH had ordered him about six weeks ago and was going to pick him up on the 23rd. Since he couldn't keep a secret we decided to pick him up early.

We also got our dd her cat three years ago the day before XMas and our German Sheperd the week of XMas, five years ago.

I know getting a pet for a holiday can be stressful for some but it works for us. All the kids are home from school to bond with it and dh has more time off as well. The timing for adding a pet to our family, for these three anyway, has also just happen to coincide with the holiday; instead of summer time.

I would never by a pet from a chain pet store. I also don't buy any products from chain pet stores.
