A vasectomy question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive December 2005 : A vasectomy question
By Anonymous on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 08:07 am:

Is it possible to become pregnant after a vasectomey, even if the man has had the 2 samples come back negative(Or whatever the term they used).
I have always wondered about this. My husband had it down over a year ago. He did go back for the 2 sample check thing, and the dr said it was fine.
I know some people have became pregnant after when the husbands did not go for the sample checks.
I often wonder how effective it is.

The only way for it to be possible is for the vas deferens to grow back together. Some docs tie, those are more likely to come undone, some cut which is a little tougher, some do a combo and cauterize which has a very very high success rate. It is possible, but not probable. I am not sure the numbers, but most post v babies happen because they surgery didn't ever work, then men didn't go for their samples.

Do you think you're pregnant? Anything is possible. My DH also had a V over a year ago. He didn't test sperm free until 3 mos. post surgery. (He went in for sperm checks monthly.) The doctor said some men take 6 mos. before all is clear and there are cases when the V doesn't take, which is why post testing is so important. Once my DH tested sperm free I specifically asked the doctor what the chances of becoming pregnant were. He laughed and gave me a statistic that was very slim. He said I usually don't see V patients again, UNLESS their wife's period is late.

No I do not think Im pregnant. I often wonder about it though. He made sure to go back for his sample checks to make sure no more babies would pop up LOL. After his 2nd check, the dr said he did not need to go back anymore, and this was over a year ago.

I would assume that is all is good then. I have V twins but DH stopped being checked, thus never had a sperm free clearance. And his procedure "grew" back together. He had it looked into after we found out I was PG. His one "tube" is reconnected, you can actually feel the scar tissue if you touch the area.

But we aren't the norm.. Which would be so typical for us by the way....

My dh had a V 5 years ago now. He never did have any samples checked. I figure after 5 years it must have worked for us! lol We never had problems getting pregnant. Staying pregnant was our problem. Anyway, I do know of some people who have had post-V babies, Bobbie being one. There's another mom on here that I haven't seen post in ages that has a post-V dd (Jazzermom). It is possible, but I'd say after being cleared by the doc it's probably not going to happen. :)

My dad's v grew back after 20 years and voila! A baby boy at age 52.

Oh, my GOSH, Heidi! I couldn't imagine! Even though dh never had his checked, they cut a piece out and burned his tubes, so I'm pretty sure it was effective (I even got to watch! lol). If my dh's grow back, it will be meant to be. :)

yes, mine had a piece cut out and also a titanium clip put on the ends. I think they are trying to be safer now. Anyway, yes, they can grow back. What kind did he have? Tied? Cauterized? Clipped?

I cannot imagine having a new baby at 52!!!

My dh never went back for the final check and it has been almost 5 years. I had a scare earlier this year. I started having problems with my periods. Turned out to be cysts. I was so glad I was not pregnant! I am not to worried about it.
