Electric Guitar Questions??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive December 2005 : Electric Guitar Questions??

My daughter is 12 years old and requesting an electric guitar for Christmas. I'm really not sure what to get. I have been looking on line and like the ones that are shaped like a W on the bottom. (hope that makes sense.) If you have any suggestions about the type, kind or where to buy PLease let me know. This is going to be her Big Gift this year. Thanks in Advance. :)

Target is selling them this year.

You want to get one from musiciansfriend.com, or at any Guitar Center. I hope you are getting some lessons for her too. The guitar is pretty hard to teach yourself. My hubby plays quite a bit, so we have the whole spectrum :)

You probably want to get a squire strat pack (the strat pack has an amp, cords, etc). Squire is a fender product. Look here http://www.guitarvision.com/mf/mf_frameset.htm
there are quite a few choices there. The w bottom I believe is called a beast style, I guess it really depends on her style. I would have her look at this website and see what type of guitars she likes. Also I would think about how seriously she is going to play. If you think this is going to be a two month hobby, then go to target and get the cheapy. But honestly if you get a better guitar it will be easier to play and more rewarding.

While my DH is in a band and plays guitar, I don't know much about guitars. I agree with Kaye. If she is going to lose interst and not take lessons or anything, get a cheapy from a discount chain. But, if you think she's going to stick with it, go to a guitar shop and pay just a little extra, not nearly as much as you think, for a good one.

My DH and oldest DS play guitar and they would wholeheartedly agree with Kaye's post. Musiciansfriend.com, in particular is a good site. DH says buy the best you can afford (maybe even used) . He said the irony is that you hate to spend big bucks on a guitar when you are not sure how interested in it she'll really be, but that a better guitar is easier to play and will more likely spur greater interest. He suggests a Squire-Telecaster or Stratacaster or Epiphone-Les Paul or SG. DH said these are good quality starter guitars and will run about $200-300. I think we have 3-4 guitars around the house (acoustic and electric), a full drum set, a clarinet, a piano, a saxophone, and a bassoon--LOL.

I would suggest checking out Daisy Rock guitars. They are designed specifically for girls/women. I have an acoustic/electric combo Daisy Rock guitar and love it. They are in the $200+ range.

Definitely Musicians Friend or Guitar Center. You could go to Guitar Center and discuss what you are looking for with a salesman. Jeff worked for Guitar Center for several years. Their employees are EXTREMELY knowledgeable. They also have a thing, open the Guitar Center account, get a year interest free. Just a thought.....

Thanks for all of the advice. I am going to get her one tom.

Andrea, the daisy guitars are so sweet. I hadn't even heard of them until your post. Thanks
