My dough didn't rise..:(

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive November 2005: My dough didn't rise..:(

Bummer! I must not have put warm enough water in to activate the yeast! I hate to waste all this dough. I don't know if I should start all over again or not! Uggh!

(Ok, Melanie, you made fun of me for taking a photo before...now you know why!)

By Claire on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 01:29 pm:

:( I would start over - are you sure your yeast is good?

By Eve on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 02:06 pm:

Thanks, Claire. I think I will give it another shot. DH just bought the yeast the other day because I wanted to make sure it was fresh. My Mom should be here pretty soon and she's better at making breads and such, so maybe I'll wait for her help. LOL

Although, the first batch is finally started to rise, but I don't know if it will be icky! I may give that one a shot and make a small batch of rolls and see how they come out. I'm just not a baker! :)

Eve - my dear son (who has been a pastry chef in one of his incarnations and is right now making the bread for our Thanksgiving) says:

Allow it to rise, make sure the temperature at which it is rising doesn't go over 110 degrees. Don't knock it down until it has *at least* doubled in volume.

He thinks you may be alright. If the water was too cold, the yeast is dormant, but not dead. (Right now Scott has his dough sitting on top of a hot pad set at low, with a couple of towels in between it and the bowl, to encourage it to rise.)

I use a candy thermometer to make sure my water or whatever liquid I'm using, is just the right temperature for bread. I don't think I could do it, just guessing and my bread always turns out!

Eve, *I* am REALLY impressed you are messing with that at this point! LOL I must be a real lazy butt, I've NEVER made dough, and *I* am not 8.5 months pregnant!

I love making bread, although I haven't done it in a while. I love the feel of yeast dough and I love how the kitchen smells, when I' mixing it up and later baking it!

By Imamommyx4 on Thursday, November 24, 2005 - 01:23 am:

I'm lazy but love the bread smell. I let my bread machine do the work. Not as good as what she is probably making but better than store bought.

And btw, I too can't believe she is doing bread and expecting to deliver any time. You go girl!

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, November 24, 2005 - 08:43 am:

I have a bread machine, but I have to keep an eye on it and take the bread out, about 15 minutes before it's done, or it burns the bread. I think it's a cheapie one. I got it for Christmas a few years back. It sits on the counter unused. To me, if I have to pay attention and take the bread out before the cycle is done, then what's the point of a machine to do it automatically. I would rather do it the old-fashioned way then. I do have a Kitchenaid mixer that helps me mix the bread dough, so that helps. Yeah, the thought that I should try another bread machine crosses my mind sometimes, but then I forget about it, too.

I use my bread machine to make my dough, and then I make the rolls or whatever in my oven. I don't like that way the machine makes the loaf. The daycare kids and I made cinnamon rolls yesterday for breakfast this morning (they took theirs home with them). I usually tweak the recipes, like add cinnamon (just a little so it doesn't mess up the dough) or I'll add Italian spices and parmesan cheese to pizza crust dough. It's pretty good. :) I don't know if I'd do it while almost 9mo pregnant, though! :)

Eve - Scott wants to know what happened with your bread.

Oh, and Scott added a little bit of orange zest and finely chopped cranberries to some of his bread - super!!!

By Eve on Friday, November 25, 2005 - 10:15 am:

Thanks for checking in! Actually, it did just take a longer time, but the dough finally did double in size and rose. I got to make all my rolls. Unfortunately, my Mom and my sister were watching the last batch and the bottoms were burnt. Still, we got one good batch! I was so glad not to have wasted all that dough!:)

Ginny-Scott's bread sounds super!

By Melanie on Friday, November 25, 2005 - 10:46 am:

I am so glad it worked out, Eve!! I am sorry I wasn't here for you. My internet connection was down for over a week! Ugh!!

Just a few more days...how exciting!!

By Dawnk777 on Friday, November 25, 2005 - 11:27 am:

Eve, I'm glad your rolls turned out, even if some got burned.

Ginny, that bread sounds delicious. I had some kind of cranberry bread in Niagara Falls, at Wolfgang Puck. I think it was yeast bread with cranberries in it, and not a cranberry quick breaad. It was sooooo good.
