TMI - Pap question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive November 2005: TMI - Pap question

Have you ever bled after a Pap? I had my yearly exam today with the nurse practitioner (a new one, first time meeting her) and afterward she warned me that I would bleed and gave me a pad. I did! What's that about? All these years and I've never bled after a yearly. I wasn't overly impressed with her anyway.

I have never had any bleeding after a Pap either. I wonder if she swabbed (sp?) something she shouldn't have? Is that even possible?? Strange...

By Breann on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 09:46 pm:

I have spotted lightly. Like VERY lightly. Never actually had any full on bleeding.

It's not full on bleeding, but more than spotting. She said it was snipping my cervix. Don't they always do that?

By Missbookworm on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 10:11 pm:

Hmmm I've never had any spotting or bleeding. Snipping your cervix?! I would have asked what that means.

It doesn't sound like I would have been very impressed with her either...

Do you have a medical information place you could call and inquire too?

*hugs*

Hmmm... I've never had any bleeding. I thought they just swab your cervix, not actually snip it. Youch! Did it hurt worse than usual?

I had bleeding once when I was pregnant and got a pap smear, but no other time

Question
What would cause bleeding after a routine Pap test?

Answer
For a Pap test, we use a small brush to remove cells from inside the cervix. These cells come from tissue that is very thin and prone to bleeding. It's a self-limiting episode of bleeding that is very common and does not mean that there is anything wrong.

This can also happen when you have a Pap test during a pregnancy visit. Women sometimes become concerned because they think that they are having a miscarriage. However, bleeding after a Pap test is very common and will go away on its own. Be sure to contact your doctor if bleeding lasts for more than a few hours or seems heavy.

or this

Bleeding after a pap smear may be from cervical dysplasia or the irritation of a verruca papule. Papanicolaou is a simple painless procedure that involves scraping a tissue from the cervix, placing it on a slide and examining under a microscope for abnormalities that could suggest cervical cancer or an infection. Papanicolaou test is done as part of regular pelvic examination.

I had a bit of bleeding when I had my first pap, because the speculum got caught and tore me a tiny bit. OUCH!

It wasn't more painful than usual. Thanks for the article info Kaye. That makes me feel better! :)

My doc always warns me that there could be bleeding but only on a couple of occasions have I even had a little spotting.

Many years back (in my mid-20s) my routine pap smear came back abnormal... precancerous. I had to do Cryosurgery where they killed the precancerous cells by freezing it. That was extremely painful. Prior to then all of my pap smears were done by swabbing. After the surgery, I had more frequent paps and it was done by "snipping". My dr said it was more accurate since they were actually testing a piece of the cervix. It appears your dr likes to go for the more accurate testing method. And, yes, it was common for me to lightly spot afterwards.
