Whats everybody's Thanksgiving plans?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive November 2005: Whats everybody's Thanksgiving plans?
By Jackie on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 08:03 am:

Are you going to somebodys house for Thanksgiving? Are you traveling? Are you having guests at your house? Or, are you just have a dinner with your family?
Funny, last year we had no invitations for Thankgsiving. Other years we have gotten together with friends. We have no family here, and we never travel on Thankgsiving. I have had friends here for Thanksgiving, I have also gone to other friends house. Last yr it was just our family. This year we got invited to 2 different places, but I declined.I decided to do Thanksgiving here, and have 2 friends and their families coming.Ive got a ton of cleaning to do before then. I do however, have all my shopping list complete for Thanksgiving,so no running out to the store for last minute things.
This year though, I have invited Kristie and her family over for Thanksgiving dinner as well. I just hope she doesnt run screaming when she sees the amount of junk and dogs we have here LOL

We are staying home. We got invited by a few friends to spend Thanksgiving with them, but we decided to stay home with just us. Dh has 2 weeks off at Christmas and we are going to Texas to spend it with both of our families. So, we decided a nice quiet day with just us would be nice. I didn't cook last year because I was sick, so I am looking forward to cooking dinner this year.

By Kernkate on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 08:39 am:

We are staying home also. It will just be Me,DH the 4 kids and my Dad. Nice quiet day at home.
I still have to run for a few odds and ends. I better get it done today seeing they are calling for snow here for the next few days.
DS is coming home tomorrow afternoon from college, just hoping and praying the weather holds out till he gets here.
Jackie that will be so nice to have your friends and Kristie there.

For the first time ever, I am having Thanksgiving at my house! We are having 16 (at last count) people over and I can't wait. I love to entertain and it has really gotten us moving as far as getting some things done around here. LOL

By Kaye on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 09:08 am:

Ditto vicki! I am so excited! Probably my biggest issue is people bringing food. We have never brought food (we might have picked something up at the store) because when you travel it is so hard. I do make pies on occasion, but only if asked. Well I have two people who keep emailing me telling me what they are bringing. I just almost seems rude. I know they want to feel like they help, but for the last 15 years I owe them. I am trying not to get offended, but it is driving me a bit crazy. I guess especially when one person is planning on bringing a brocilli casserole and I already have that made.

By Vicki on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 09:29 am:

Oh Kaye, God love ya. I am sure part of why I am not stressing and getting nervous is BECAUSE people are bringing stuff too. LOL I have no idea how I would make all of that with only one oven! LOL

By Marcia on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 11:12 am:

My plans are to sit here and drool as I read all about what you guys will be eating. LOL Our Thanksgiving was in October.

Kaye, we always do potluck! My sister does Thanksgiving, and I do Christmas. When the whole family is here, we could have close to 25 people. It's insane for one person to do it all. We bring whatever our thing is hot, and half the time take home our dirty dishes. Sure makes life easier on everyone!
Enjoy!

Going to the in-laws about 1 1/2 hours away. They always make us take a majority of the leftovers so i'm sure we'll have about 2 weeks worth of leftovers, lol!

By Dawnk777 on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 11:25 am:

I still don't know what we are actually going to do. I think I would like to just stay home and have a quiet meal, with just the 4 of us. We have never done that on Thanksgiving, except for when I would have to work Thanksgiving, when I worked in the hospital. I have a recipe I want to make, if that's what we decide to do.

By Nicki on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 12:32 pm:

We are going over to my MIL's house. My Dh offered to cook the turkey for her. Kaye, I think my MIL feels as you do about others bringing dishes. It seems odd to her since she is hosting the dinner. She loves to have people over! On the other hand, I am so NOT (lol) comfortable with it. If Thanksgiving was happening here, I would love for people to bring something! And I always feel badly she must do all the work. So I feel like I should offer to bring a dish, but my Dh patiently reminds me she would rather prepare the whole meal. So I understand.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

I'm with you Marcia! I think we should be invited to someone's house for dinner! ;)

This year I did a potluck thanksgiving with about 20 of my close friends (my extended family as I have no family here). I think it was one of the best Thanksgivings we've had! 20 mom's and children! It was so great!

By Karen~moderator on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 03:28 pm:

We've had a few invitations, some firm, some not so firm. All the kids go to my X's for Thanksgiving, and with my Mom gone and my sisters elsewhere, it will be just DH and I. We considered going out to eat in the French Quarter, but we were just there yesterday for our anniversary, so I think we are going to just stay home and grill baby back ribs. LOL DH was gone for almost 2 months after the hurricane, so we are happy to stay home together.

By Rayanne on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 03:33 pm:

We are going to DH's Aunts house first for a little while...won't eat too much. Then we are going to my parents house where I am going to stuff my face. LOL.

By Annie2 on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 07:29 pm:

We are having friends (the parents and their two kids)over plus her visiting sister, bil and their two kids; whom I have never met.

I have the grocery shopping done. Now I just have to clean the house, polish the silver and clean the linens. The kids and I will do this on Wed. That's the plan anyways!

By Tink on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 08:29 pm:

My mom and sister are in London and my brother and his family are eating with his in-laws so we're going to have dinner with my stepdad's sister -in-law. She's also my mom's best friend and they have nieces and nephews my children's ages. The hostess doesn't like dishes brought by her guests either. We all pitch in once we get there and gossip and nibble while the men take care of the kids. It's such a fun time!

By Sunny on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 09:13 pm:

As in previous years, we are staying home and having my brother, his friend and her mom joining us. I really like cooking a big dinner and like even more not having to go anywhere. :)

By Colette on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 05:39 am:

I always have everyone come here. We have about 11 total this year I think.

By Insaneusmcwife on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 08:03 am:

Jackie your too funny. I'm not going to run screaming any where. My birth mom in Texas has I think 9 dogs right now and thats low since the last time we were there I think she had 13. And a pig, and a goat and cats and at one time 2 ferrets. My step-mom at one time had 2 chinchillas, a racoon, snakes, raised mice for the snakes, 2 amazon parrots, 3iguanas, 3 dogs, 2 cats, fish, taranchula, huge tortoise, rabbit and a huge avery full of birds. She is now down to the avery full of birds, I think 3 dogs and 2 cats and 1 parrot. My sister has a couple bearded dragons in her room. Animals don't bother me as long as I don't have to be the one to take care of them, lol. We have 1 cat and its litter box pretty much cleans itself :).

The family and I are really looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with you. See you soon.

P.S. don't be too concerned about what the house looks like, we are coming to spend the holiday with you not your house :)

By Luvn29 on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 08:22 am:

My huge extended family always gets together at one of my aunt's houses for Thanksgiving. Afterwards, we stop by my in-laws for a quick bite *ugh*!

The day after Thanksgiving, we are leaving early to go to Pigeon Forge, TN. Our church goes to Dixie Stampede every year and pays for the children's tickets and gives the adults a group discount. Their Christmas Show is wonderful, as well as the food!

We are staying till Sunday, so we hope to go to Dollywood for their Christmas lights one evening, and also make a quick trip back to Ripley's Aquarium before coming home... We are SO excited!

By Enchens on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 - 01:20 pm:

We've been going to the in-laws for 4 years now, so why break tradition? I'm sure it will be my turn soon enough.

My mil is going to have a ton of people over this year, not sure why her plan changed from small to large scale but it should be fun. I feel bad for her, though, because she just got sick yesterday. She's so sick she missed work, and she never misses work.

We'll be driving to the house at night, the later the better because of So Cal traffic. If we get stuck at night, at least the boys will be asleep.

My dh's aunt is making the mashed potatoes this year-yummy! And Grandpa is bringing about 4 or 5 pies-double yummy!

Don't know if we'll get leftovers this year since we are cleaning out the fridge for our move.
