Counting down to grandbaby time

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive November 2005: Counting down to grandbaby time
By Ginny~moderator on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 07:03 pm:

My dear dil is a week past her due date (and with in vitro, you really, really know), and is slightly dilated. If she doesn't deliver within a week, the doctor intends to induce. So, it is getting really, really, really close. I am feeling all mushy and misty, and just very, very impatient. Though I'm sure my dil is more impatient.

By Kernkate on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 08:05 pm:

Awwww, bet you can not wait to have that Grandbaby in your arms! Best of luck to all:)

By Trina~moderator on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 08:10 pm:

Maybe your first grandbaby will be a birthday buddy with my new nephew (Eve's baby)!

CONGRATS! What do you want your grandchild to call you? Grandma, Nana, ...? Have you thought about it yet? {{{Ginny}}}

By Luvn29 on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 11:06 pm:

How exciting! A little pre-k student at my school calls her grandpa poppy and her grandma Granna. I just love that! Think it sounds so sweet!

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 05:12 am:

I think what I am called will have to be negotiated with the baby's parents, and in the end will probably be what the baby can manage when the words first come out. My preference would be Grandma or Grandmom. However, I live in a part of the country where people often use PopPop and MomMom (which I loathe). But that's so far down the road right now. All I want now is to count some fingers and toes and do a lot of cooing.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 07:15 am:

I can't believe it is time already. It just seems like yesterday that we found out she was expecting. Have fun Grandma...

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 09:49 am:

Ginny, I remembered the time is near. I didn't want to keep bugging you with emails. But I am anxious to know which *flavor* they ended up with, AND the name of the baby! DO post pics as soon as you can!. Congratulations *Grandma!*

By Rayanne on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 09:51 am:

CDongratulations Hun. Can't wait to see pictures too.:)

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 09:59 am:

I hope it's soon. It gets hard to wait, at the end!

By Eve on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 12:30 pm:

Very exciting, Ginny! I was thinking about you the other day, wondering when the Grandbaby would arrive.:)

Ginny-my Mom worried and worried about what she wanted to be called. She came up with a million things and then decided on "Grammy." Well, DD could never say the "G", so she became "Bammy" and then finally "Bam." So, all that worrying and we all call her "Bam!" LOL

BTW-Same thing with DH's Mom--she was called "Nam" for the same reason.

Congratulations! I can't wait to hear the good news.:)

By Reds9298 on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 04:12 pm:

In our family, grandparents are called "Mamaw" and "Papaw". Natalie is almost 17mths and is managing 'Pap' right now. She's Papaw's girl!

What a wonderful time for your family! I'm looking forward to the little one's arrival and all the 'stats'.:)

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 04:53 pm:

LOL, Eve! I was thinking about that, too. Our MIL was known as "Nam" or "Nammy" because her first grandchild called her that. FIL preferred to be called "Pa". Our last name is French, but neither of them wanted to go by "Memere" or "Pepere". LOL!

My parents are simply "Grandma" and "Grandpa".

By Tink on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 05:24 pm:

How funny that so many first grandbabies end up with the honor of naming their grandparents. My dks have Nonna and Poppy and Grandma Lynn and Grandpa Vince. Can you tell which set let my oldest do the naming???

I can't wait to hear the good news, Grandma Ginny!!!

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 01:33 am:

For awhile, my dad was "Bapa!" Sarah came up with that on her own. She was the first grandchild. So, for a while, he was bapa. Then the cousins came along, and he was Papa Ron. Now, he is just Grandpa!

My mom has pretty much always been Grandma! She tried to get Nana started, but it really didn't catch on.

Gary's dad was pretty much always Grandpa, even to those of us, who he wasn't a Grandpa to! It was just easier for everyone to call him Grandpa, if you were talking about him, anyway. I usually just called him Ralph to his face, but in a story, he would have been Grandpa.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 07:54 am:

My children call all their grandparents, Grandma and Grandpa and then their first name. I have one set that I called Grandma and Grandpa and then the first name (the ones I was close to) and the others were Grandma and Grandpa and then their last name (the ones I didn't have much of a relationship with). Rob said he wanted to do something more fun when it is our turn to be Grandparents, we hope to be very involved in the lives of our Grandchildren, our children have missed out on that. Long story, but all but MIL (who lives with us) the kids see the others very seldom and they have no personal relationships with them. They miss that and it hurts them to not be "known" by their grandparents and I have tried to explain to my parents that it was important and they have never tried.

Anyway, Ginny I agree, that baby will call you whatever it wants and it will grow on you. I am very close to one of my sisters (more of a mother daughter relationship) and when her kids first started making reference to me I didn't care what they called me, it melted my heart.

We want pictures and all the stats as soon as you can get back to us..

By Bea on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 11:35 am:

LOL you may get GinGin. I have an aunt we still call that. I'm so very excited for you Ginny. I know you'll treasure every tiny toe and finger. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

By Nicki on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 12:48 pm:

How exciting! You will be a wonderful grandma.

By Yjja123 on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

Congrats on the new grandbaby!
We call my parents Grandma & Grandpa.
John's parents are Nana & Papa.
When John's grandma was alive she was G.G. She loved the name GG and Jessica just started calling her it out of the blue. We finally asked her why and she said "cause great grandma is too long!".

By Kaye on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 02:59 pm:

As for grandparent names. I think having an idea helps, just don't get stuck on it. If you pick something like grandmother, you are likely to get a NEW name. My fil wanted to be grandfather, he pushed and pushed and was very angry at age 1, no kids called him by name, because no one could say it. He would correct them they said it wrong. Well the oldest had cancer after many surgerys she asked to see her "peepaw" and we were all so glad she made it, it melted his heart and that name stuck!

By Ginny~moderator on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 04:43 pm:

Bea, definitely not "Gin-Gin". The only people who call me Ginny, aside from this board, are my ex and my "birth" family. Everyone else calls me Virginia, which I prefer. Why am I Ginny on this board (as I was on MomtoMom)? Heaven knows - I was new to the internet and thought a username had to be something other than one's real name, and I think there was already a Virginia on MomtoMom. When people in my real (as opposed to "virtual") world call me Ginny, I used to just ask them to call me Virginia, and some "dear" people would insist that they preferred Ginny. So I started saying "Ginny is my mother's little girl", and for some reason that sinks in, so I stay Virginia. Except, of course, at Momsview, where you are all free to call me Ginny. (Especially since that *is* my username.)

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 07:53 pm:

Madison calls me Neena. I was *supposed* to be Nana (which, in hindsight, does NOT fit! LOL), and when she started talking, she said *NEEna*, so that's who I am, and who I will be to any future grandchildren!

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 09:54 pm:

Ginny, I hate being called Dawnie! DH and my "Big Brother/Big sisters" little sister are the only 2 people in my life who have gotten away with it! The kindergarteners at school tried to call me Dawnie and I told them my name is Dawn. I'm not a teacher, so I don't care if they call me by my first name, just not Dawnie! So, just like Joseph wants to be Joseph, I want to be Dawn and not Dawnie! LOL! (I tried to call him Joe and was corrected! I also tried to shorten Nefertia, too, but Tia is what her Grandma calls her and she wanted it to stay that way!)

By Bea on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 11:00 pm:

LOL Virginia. I was Peach as a child. My brother couldn't say Beatrice, and it sounded more like Peaches. So Peach I still am to my relatives. I hated it, and nick named myself Bea in school. Virginia is my middle name. Nichole calls me Beabea

By Eve on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 06:59 am:

I love the name Ginny, but I completely understand!:)

I always wished I had more of a convertible name that would get a good nickname. LOL My family and DH will call me Evie, but that's about it.

By Cybermommyx4 on Monday, November 21, 2005 - 07:28 am:

My kids named my parents Chingma and Chingpa (tried to say "grandma" and got something like "ginma" which then became "Chingma") They love it, and the kids love it! They *do* get some funny looks sometimes, but at least they're unique :)

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 10:52 pm:

It's official - Lori goes to the hospital 8:PM tomorrow to be induced. So it looks like some time Friday I will be a grandmother. She is planning to be at her mother's for the Thanksgiving family thing tomorrow, so I'll see her then.

I am feeling sooooo mushy.

By Breann on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 11:05 pm:

Oh how exciting! I'm so happy for you! Can't wait to hear the big announcement!

By Jelygu on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 11:16 pm:

Congratulations! This is so exciting!
My mom thought and thought about what she wanted Christopher to call her. Finally, she decided on Grammy, but he calls her Gammy. It's cute!

By Kernkate on Thursday, November 24, 2005 - 12:31 am:

Almost here!

By Beth on Thursday, November 24, 2005 - 07:50 am:

Congrads! My mom and dad have been several names. I don't know why but my ds is the oldest grandkid and he has changed it several times and my dd just follows suit. They are now grandma and granpa. Sometimes they will still call them Memaw and Pepaw. I am not so sure my dad liked Pepaw but what ever they wanted he went along with it. Now we have to put the first or last name after it sometimes to. Because they have 3 grandmas but only one grandpa.

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, November 24, 2005 - 09:40 am:
