Sould I be more concerned?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: Sould I be more concerned?

I have posted on here before about my son not walking and talking yet. Well he is now 17 months old (on the 24) and finally last month started walking, but he has not said one word yet. The doctor is real concerned and wants to a hearing test and send him to speech therapy. Which of course I will do. But I just think that he will talk when he wants to. Just like walking, we were about to have to go through physical therapy until he started walking the same week of our first appt. Which like the speech therapy, I don't have any problems doing whatever it takes to help him. When he was born he didn't pass the infant hearing test and we went through about 3 more until about 4 months when his hearing "matured" (they said) and he passed. Since then we have not had another one, but he turns his head at noises and acts like he hears them fine. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

One thing that I forgot was he babbles all of the time and when he does it is very loud!! I don't even go out to eat anywhere because his babbling is like yelling. I can't get him to quiet down. He isn't being ugly, he is just talking in his way.

I would just do what the doctor said to do. Get the speech therapy and the hearing test.

Do not worry though. They just do the hearing test to rule it out as the problem.

I would definitely have his hearing tested again. My youngest ds had problems with ear infections and had hearing loss because of it. He also turned his head at noises and "seemed" to hear. He was babbling, but not talking. They tested his hearing and found that he could hear at only 60% of what he should be. He ended up with tubes that helped with his ear problems. As soon as it was fixed, he started talking nonstop.

Now, my oldest didn't really talk until he was 2. He went from words to sentences in like a week. It seemed that once he decided he wanted to do it, he took off.

So, it could be nothing, but I would definitely have his hearing checked, especially since he is talking loud. My ds with the hearing loss, did this too.

Well, I don't know that I would be in panic mode, but I would be concerned. I don't think further testing would hurt one bit and might give you some answers!! Even if everything turns out fine, it will be piece of mind for you! If a problem is found, it is best to address it early! A win win situation to me!!

Thank you guys, I am going through with the further testing next month. Hopefully things will work themselves out. I will keep you posted.

Hey Joelle! I would go ahead and get L tested for hearing, but don't fret over it while you are waiting. He is probably just fine. Will was a late talker. He didn't start saying even mama or dada until he was 2yo. He was also very loud in his babbling and noises (and he's still is:)). I had his hearing checked and it turned out that he was just fine and I got the peace of mind out of knowing.

BTW, thank you for the picture of the boys! I got your card today. I love the costumes and I can't believe how big they are getting to be! I'll try to sit down and email you this weekend.

My oldest daughter didn't walk until she was 16.5 months, and didn't have much speech before 2. She can sure talk now!!!!!!! It's just like that saying, you can't wait for them to walk and talk, and then you spend years telling them to sit down and be quiet. :)
