CLASS RING

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: CLASS RING
By Lorebunde on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:17 am:

Has anyones son/daughter purchased their high school ring? My son is in 10th grade and the one he likes is $600! Is this the norm? Tonight we'll be ordering it and wanted to see what others thought of this?

By Kernkate on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:20 am:

To me it seems high priced. But I haven't bought one since 1980. My DS didn't get one in 2003 when he graduated. In our school they just don't seem to be buying class rings. Maybe because of the price??

By Ilovetom on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:31 am:

We bought one and I want to say it was around 250 or so.

He never wears it.

My mama talked me into buying my clemson ring when I graduated and I am so glad I did.

By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:39 am:

Yikes! At that price my kids will be buying their own. LOL! Neither DH or I bought high school or college rings and have NO regrets.

By Lorebunde on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:50 am:

Now I have to try to convince him its silly! I don't mind getting one but $600! Everyone tells me after HS they never wore it again.

By Luv2fly on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:54 am:

You might check local jewellery stores, I believe they are typically offering a better price than the big names that come to the school and generate all the hype.

Your 600 sounds high but seems like a lot depends on exactly what you pick. Those nice brochures have all kinds of choices.

By Vicki on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 12:06 pm:

I agree that it sounds very high. And I never wore mine after high school either.

By Luvn29 on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 12:15 pm:

My mom tried to talk me into getting one. At the time, I was pregnant (I had my first child at age 17, right after graduating highschool)and felt the money could be used on something better, like my baby. She even took me to Wal-mart where they have very nice, but much cheaper rings than the group Balfour that came to our school.

I still didn't get one. It just didn't seem important to me. And I have no regrets at all. Of course, I remember my now husband letting me wear his classring when we started "going steady" and that was the most wonderful feeling in the world. So maybe it is more important for a guy to get one. But then again, as a mother, if my son gave his ring to any old girl when it cost $600, I'd be livid! hehe!!!

If it's important to him to get one, check around. He most definitely could get one at a local jewelry store or even at Wal-mart. So don't feel pressured to get the one from school...

my sister bought my Nieces at Wal mart the one she wanted throught the school we 400. She found one at walmart that was almost the exact same but to me the one she got was alot prettier and she paid 120.00 and its a nice ring . I would have him check out other places that does seem a little high

By Lorebunde on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 01:04 pm:

Thanks. I didn't know walmart sold those rings. I was thinking the same thing, that he'll give it to some girl.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 01:25 pm:

Yes, Wal Mart sells class rings.

We paid around $300, give or take a little, for each of my kids' class rings. And the funny thing is, *I* am the one who wanted them to have them - they couldn't have cared less.

If I had realized we could have gotten the ring at Wal Mart for much cheaper, I would have bought it there. There really was no specific ring for them, nowadays you can customize the class rings with any color stone, choice of metal, special emblems, etc. to signify the activities you were involved in.... I'd go to Wal Mart and order it there.

I still wear mine, my parents were having a hard time & my grandmother gave me hers. I should put it away because the "P" for Parma is wearing off, but you can still see the 1951 & her initials on it.

By Christylee on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 02:51 pm:

Mine was about $350 but I ordered it through the school with my younger sister the went elsewhere and got a much better deal. Live and learn, lol... Mine is in my jewlry box and I still wear it occasionally.

Walmart has some really nice ones, make sure to check it out there before going through the school.

By Mrsheidi on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 03:20 pm:

I never bought one and I never regretted it. I know where I graduated from and, once I graduated, it looked silly to wear it in college. It's **really** a waste of money.
Maybe tell him you'll spend half that money on his graduation present instead? Something he *really* needs? (Gas, payment on his car, clothes, etc.)

By Kaye on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 04:29 pm:

I got an non traditional ring, the ones with the little diamonds instead of the big colored stone. I did wear if for a long time, it was almost like a right of passage. I don't wear it now (actually i quit wearing it when i got engaged at 19..lol). BUT I grew up and had my dad's ring to wear, my mom passed away and that something VERY sentimental to us. It is like a little part of their history that you can hold. I will defintely buy rings for my kids, but hopefully I won't be spending 600 dollars.

By Colette on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 04:35 pm:

I never bought one and never regretted it. I don't know anyone who ever wore one.

By Missmudd on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 06:26 pm:

Dont have one, dont miss it. Honestly if you are going to pay $600 for a ring it might as well be "real", not fake stones.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 06:55 pm:

DH and I never got one and don't regret it. Sarah has never asked for one. She just told me that they push it more when you are a junior, which she is now. She does want one. Hadn't really thought of this myself.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 11:49 pm:

DD just got hers.. I bought it through Wal-mart for under $110 with tax.

She has a Classic Oval Personalized.. Starburst stone, High School name, her name, her graduating year. On one side she has Choir on the other music and her full name fit perfect on the inside (18 characters including spaces). I got her Validium because for two years of wear I couldn't see spending big money on Gold or other wise..

They have an online link.. You can go check out what they offer there. They have demo rings in the store if you want to see them in person.. And it takes about two and a half weeks to three weeks to ship.

Wal-Mart

Thanks for all the replys! He did go with my dh last night to order it. The guy told him not to get 14 kt white gold, but 10 kt so that cut down a little. It was more like $450. He was also told that when college comes, you can trade it in so I dont feel too bad.

By Babysitbarb on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 10:15 pm:

I paid almost $300 dollars for my DD's class ring and she hardly ever wears it. It's really nice and looks more like regular ring then a class ring.It makes me mad but, what can I do, I can't force her to wear it.
I bought mine at the local jewlrey store many years ago and it was reasonable but, I never really liked it.
