Help! Quarter Jammed in Garbage Disposal

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: Help! Quarter Jammed in Garbage Disposal
By Joy~bundles on Sunday, October 16, 2005 - 11:55 am:

I was emptying some change out of my pocket and onto the kitchen counter. I dropped a quarter and it fell into the sink and right down the garbage disposal!! Ahhh!!

My garbage disposal is now jammed - it only makes a humming sound when I turn it on. I referenced my home improvement manual, and it suggested putting a broom handle down the disposal to "jog" and free the flywheel. I attempted this procedure, but I can't get anything to happen.

Help - any suggestions on unjamming my disposal??? Thanks!!

First make sure the power is off and stick you hand down there, look with a flashlight and see if you can retrieve the quarter.

Second under the garbage disposal is a slot for a "key". A hexagonal type screwdriver, it may even be taped to the disposal. Anyway, if you can find this you should be able to turn and crank through the issue. There is also a reset button that you may need to push.
